Market Ticker | Will America Become Detroit??????

October 07, 2009

Under the current Zombulation Policy, much of America may become just like Detroit....but this time America may not have America to help it out like Detroit.

Thousands Line Up For Stimulus Money in Detroit........

DETROIT -- Detroit's homeless and low-income residents have another opportunity for a chance at millions of stimulus dollars.

The money is available to help low-income residents from becoming homeless and homeless residents to find housing.

Thousands of people lined up Tuesday.

Some people in line falsely believed they were registering for $3,000 stimulus checks from the Obama Administration.

Just like Detroit was dependent on the Auto Industry, America is dependent on the Domestic Leveraged Consumer. Without massive borrowing, America really doesn't have much of an Economy....whether it be consumer borrowing or government borrowing.

And without having the reserve currency, America will have a tough time borrowing.

And guess what the world is up to right now????? Pretty soon, Obama will be facing one of two choices, restructure our economy or attack the world............let's see which one he picks.

MIRAGES IN ANTARCTICA

FATA MORGNA EFFECT | Antarctica's fairy castles in the air

The coolest mountain you never actually saw

Photo of "Fata Morgana" effect
near McMurdo Station, Antarctica (by Jeff Fogg)

It can go down as Antarctica's prettiest mountain that doesn't actually exist.

Our friend Jeff Fogg, who is from Issaquah but working a 6-month tour as a heavy equipment operator down at McMurdo Station on Antarctica, sent another great photo from his arctic environment.

This is of a mirage-like phenomenon called "Fata Morgana." It has to do with light rays being reflected as the light travels through different densities of air masses, most likely related to temperature differences.

Here is a more complete explanation.

Homeless Tent City Camp Gets Attention
Landowner May Allow Tents to Stay

Visalia, California - Visalia and county officials and advocates for the homeless are to meet today to try and find a solution to the growing homeless tent city on the northern boundary of Visalia.

The 1:30 p.m. meeting at the Tulare County Sheriff's Department, 2404 W. Burrel, Visalia, will bring together social service providers, law enforcement and public officials to find alternative housing for those camped out along the banks of the Saint Johns River, west of Ben Maddox.

Late Monday, it was reported that the property owner had decided to not only let the tents stay, but that she may provide electricity, water and porta potties.

City officials have become concerned about the camp, with Mayor Jesus Gamboa suggesting two weeks ago that the city provide water and portable toilets. That motion before the city council was defeated by a 4-1 vote, with those against it pointing out the encampment is outside of the city limits. By some estimates, the camp has around 100 people living there. Tents and makeshift tents are spread out over several hundred yards.

“The reason for the meeting is that we had complaints,” said Capt. Dave Williams of the Tulare County Sheriff's Department Patrol Division. “We've contacted all the property owners and they said they don't want them on the property.”

This kind of civic partnership to deal with a local homeless issue may be among the first of its kind. “I haven't seen other cities do anything like this,” Williams said. “I looked on the Internet and haven't found anything like this.

“The philosophy of policing has changed a lot,” he added. “We're more focused on developing partnerships rather than pushing the problem into other areas.”

“We're willing to be part of the committee,” said Jessica Van Ginkel, public relations manager at Visalia Rescue Mission, which serves an average of 550 meals a day, every day of the year. “We're here to help and we want to be part of the solution.
“We have beds available,” she added. “There is no reason they have to be at the (homeless) community.”

Van Ginkel said that a lot of people from the community come in for meals, but explained that there are two main reasons they choose not to stay overnight. “They have to be free from drugs and alcohol, and we separate the men and women.” She added that the Visalia Rescue Mission offers a program to help people overcome their dependence on alcohol and drugs.

“I think we should be part of the solution, and be part of the team,” said Gamboa. “There's a portion of CDBG (Community Development Block Grants) that allows for dealing with the homeless issue.

“If we evict them, where do you think they're going to go?” he asked. “They're going to come to Visalia.”

According to Mark McPhee of HomeLand Missions, one of the property owners in the area, after seeing the encampment, is now willing to allow people to camp on her property.

“When she saw with her own two eyes and saw the ministry – the people and those who were there helping these people – God changed her heart about them leaving,” he reported in an email. “She then went and got her children and grandchildren and took them down there and said, 'This is all your inheritance and you make sure to take care of these people!'”

He added that the woman plans to provide electricity, running water, a trash dumpster and portable toilets at the site.

If that is true, the legal issue would shift from trespassing to code compliance, with officials looking at violations such as substandard housing and insufficient utilities, according to Williams.

Some of those at today's meeting don't believe that all of the people will want to leave the homeless community, no matter what solutions are found. “A lot of people are not relocatable because there are a lot of issues,” Gamboa said.

Advocates fight cap on homeless camp

By Nicole Young
THE TENNESSEAN

Police Cmdr. Damian Huggins told the Metropolitan Homelessness Commission on Tuesday that it's time to put a limit on the number of homeless people at Tent City and move toward shutting down the site near the Cumberland River.

But homeless advocates say closing the camp will drive the residents back to the streets and make it more difficult for them to get the help they need.

"These people are in a set location where they are able to be reached and they can reach out to us," said Jeannie Alexander, a homeless outreach advocate with Park Center. "The reason that people are continuing to come to Tent City is because they can get services there. It's not the fastest process, but it's happening."

As of this week, more than 40 people have been moved out of Tent City and placed into permanent housing, Alexander said.

"What we can't lose sight of is that these people aren't statistics. They are human beings and they are asking for help," she said. "I can't as a human being turn my back on another human being asking me for help.

"Putting a cap on Tent City with no alternative for the other people who show up there asking for help doesn't solve homelessness. It just pretends it doesn't exist."

Crime has increased nearby

Huggins, the police commander who oversees the Central Precinct in downtown Nashville, still wants the camp closed, citing safety concerns and an increase in downtown crime.

A breakdown of the calls for service shows that the majority of the calls in about a mile radius of Tent City — 137 of 184 calls in a year — were attributed to reports of a suspicious person or requests for an officer for an unspecified reason.

Reports of a person with a weapon increased from three to nine, and calls for an intoxicated person grew from two calls to five this year.

Huggins says he is frustrated by Tent City's growing population. He believes the homeless at the camp, near Anthes Drive, are contributing to crime in the area.

The camp has grown from a handful of residents to about 80 during the past year.

"I think we need to cap it off and move forward," Huggins said. "We need a list of who is down there currently and stop the resources at that point. This is not a safe place for people."

Alternative site sought

Councilman Erik Cole, chairman of the commission, said officials had been working with the Metro Development and Housing Agency in the search for an alternative site for a homeless encampment for about six months with little luck.

"I don't know how to make a cap on Tent City work without having another site to direct these people to when they need help," Cole said. "There's going to be homeless people. That's not going to go away. It's obvious that they are migrating to Tent City to get services."

The commission will meet in two weeks to continue the discussion.

Bird Cam Captures Albatross, Killer Whale Rendezvous

Tiny cameras attached to the backs of four Antarctic albatrosses have revealed a clever feeding strategy: Instead of randomly scanning the open ocean for prey, some birds appear to fly alongside killer whales and scavenge for scraps left by the mammalian predators.

The researchers say it’s difficult to quantify how often black-browed albatrosses associate with killer whales in the open ocean, but they say their findings suggest that shared meals may be quite common.

“When killer whales feed on fish, fragments of prey are often left near the sea surface,” the scientists wrote. “These prey fragments could be an important food resource for albatrosses. Scavenging on such prey fragments may be more energetically advantageous than the pursuit and capture of live prey, as such activities can require frequent take-off, landing and prey handling, which may all be energetically costly.” FULL STORY

EARTH'S MAGNETOSPHERE TONIGHT

Have been personally doing some research on what is going on with our planet's magnetosphere - one of the latest and very credible sources explained it (and I will attempt to translate - in my layman's description) as our solar system passing through an area of the galaxy of very high magnetism affecting our sun and its solar system. He referred to what is taking place and will continue perhaps until 2013+ as a type of huge magnetic squeeze coming forth from the Milky Way galaxy. That this will be resulting in a continuing of very strange weather together with increase in solar outbursts and events, earthquakes, tectonic activity and volcanism. Essentially we will need to hold on for the ride and get used to it.

Packing sustained winds of 130+ mph, Typhoon Melor continues its turn to the north as Japan prepares for a direct hit

October 6, 11:08 AM - Typhoon Melor is the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane and is turning toward Japan.

STRIPES' PACIFIC STORM TRACKER BLOG: Updates on Melor

Midnight Japan time Tuesday, Oct. 6: All indications remain the same, except Typhoon Melor's forecast track keeps inching further northwest of the Kanto Plain toward the mountains of Central Honshu known as the Japan Alps. Okinawa getting buffeted by 50-mph gusts and rain bands as I type this; that should end late Wednesday morning. Landfall still forecast by Joint Typhoon Warning Center for 9 a.m. Thursday over Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture more than 200 miles west-southwest of Tokyo, at which point it will still be packing 80-mph sustained winds and 100-mph gusts.

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — Most of 7th Fleet’s ships and fighter jets have left their bases near Tokyo in advance of Typhoon Melor’s impending arrival, officials said Tuesday.

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, forecasters predicted Typhoon Melor’s eye to veer about 160 miles west of the Kanto Plain, which includes bases from all four branches of the armed forces. Meteorologists still expected Wednesday and Thursday to come with heavy rains and winds gusting up to 75 mph over inland areas such as Naval Air Facility Atsugi, 30 miles southwest of Tokyo.

The storm’s eye was projected to come ashore at Hamamatsu, packing 98 mph sustained winds and 121 mph gusts, as of Tuesday evening.

“This (typhoon) is one where we felt it prudent to get the ships out to sea for safety,” 7th Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Davis said.

The USS Shiloh, USS Fitzgerald and USS Lassen each left Yokosuka — about 35 miles south of Tokyo — on Monday. The aircraft carrier USS George Washington, USS Cowpens, USS O’Kane and USS Mustin left Tuesday, he said.

Most of the ships were already scheduled to get under way shortly, Davis said. Only the USS Lassen will return to port following the storm.

The USS John S. McCain, USS Stethem and U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Assateague remained at Yokosuka on Tuesday, as did multiple destroyers on the Japanese side of the harbor.

The USNS Able, a contracted ship owned by the Military Sealift Command, moved from its less-protected berth in Yokohama over to Yokosuka.

Meanwhile, fighter jets based at Atsugi flew out to sea to land on the USS George Washington on Tuesday, said Atsugi base spokesman Tim McGough.

Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 51’s helicopters and the base’s C-12 airplanes are being secured in hangars, he said.

The military bases surrounding Tokyo are likely to get six to 10 inches of rainfall, Lt. Allan Howard of Naval Aviation Forecast Detachment Atsugi said Tuesday. Howard expects the heaviest rain between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Earlier this week, the storm’s eye appeared to be headed within about 30 miles of Yokosuka. Despite Melor’s turn to the west, the cool, dry air upstream of the storm will likely still mean high winds over the Kanto Plain, Howard said.

October 5, 2009 - Mexicans typically must pay smugglers about $1,500 for help in making the trek across a sun-seared landscape that is as dangerous as it is majestic. The fees for Central Americans and South Americans often reach $6,000. A group of bewildered Haitians, intercepted a few years ago in Tucson after three nights spent hiking in circles in a canyon, had coughed up $10,000; another $10,000 was to have been paid upon arrival in the Chicago area.

The Chinese, who come almost exclusively from Fujian province, pay the most. They often have to work off fees of between $30,000 and $70,000 over the course of several years as indentured servants in the sweat shops and kitchens of New York and other cities....

Republic of Lakota | Blood on the Maple Leaf - Recent killings linked to Canadian Nickel Mine in Guatemala - 2 Qeqchi Leaders Killed & dozen+ wounded

RECENT KILLINGS LINKED TO CANADIAN-OWNED NICKEL MINE IN GUATEMALA

Two Qeqchi leaders were shot and killed and over a dozen wounded this week near the site of a shuttered nickel mine in Guatemala.

The first shooting took place on Sunday, September 27 on land claimed by the community of Las Nubes, which Compañia Guatemalteca de Niquel (CGN), a subsidiary of Manitoba’s HudBay Minerals, also claims to own.

Early reports indicated CGN’s private security guards opened fire while attempting to remove families from their land. Adolfo Ichi Chamán, a teacher and community leader, was killed by gunshot, at least eight more wounded by bullets fired from an AK-47.

Prensa Libre, Guatemala’s leading newspaper, reported that during Chamán’s funeral service yesterday, thousands of people marched through the streets of El Estor, demanding that the company and the local police chief withdraw from the area within 24 hours.

HudBay released a lengthy statement yesterday claiming that there were no evictions, but instead that “protestors” went on a rampage, attacking government vehicles, a local police station (where they allegedly stole automatic weapons), destroying a hospital built by a coalition of US NGOs, and wounding five employees.

Hudbay goes on to make the absurd claim that the protesters proceeded to open fire on each other.

Liezel Hill of Mining Weekly went on to parrot the company’s version of events, as did the Canadian Press and Reuters.

One day after the murder of Chamán, men armed with machine guns opened fire on a mini-bus carrying Indigenous educators and leaders from the El Estor region to Cobán. One man, Martin Choc, was killed, and at least nine more wounded.

These killings are a flare up in a tense area, where the track record of Canadian mining companies includes forced displacement over multiple generations, co-operation with the army, and the burning of homes belonging to Indigenous people.

Shortly after a series of violent evictions that took place on nearby lands in 2007, Skye Resources (later acquired by Hudbay) representatives went on the record and lied through their teeth to defend their actions.

The English-language corporate media has repeatedly turned a blind eye to recent and past events unfolding in El Estor. This kind of reporting facilitates corporate lies and deceit, plain and simple.

Lies and deceit are just what HudBay needs, not only to avoid an international outcry over the recent killings, but also to spin a mining project that is not likely to produce any nickel at all.
