StanDeyo.com | Thanksgiving Day - November 26, 2009

We wish you and your family a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving holiday. Even though there is much turmoil in the world, never lose sight of the Big Picture. We are here but for a brief time before the Lord puts everything right. Stand strong in Him and be encourged. - Stan & Holly

THANKSGIVING DAY

Deyo Note:

As one reader pointed out, there are many worthwhile charities, but it is primarily the larger ones that receive huge attention. It is not our intention to overlook anyone, but there are literally thousands of them sprinkled across the Nation. Many are too poor or too busy to maintain websites.

Please help your smaller local charitable agencies where you can. Often they are the backbone and saving grace of communities that are overlooked by national groups. This is especially true for animal shelters. Many people donate their time to keep these facilities open. They run their programs on minuscule budgets, mostly through donations.

When I lived in northern Colo., the Safeways always maintained a 6'x6'x3' wooden donation box where people could contribute pet food or cash. It was a personal joy to help out. Sorry to say, this tradition has not appeared here in southern Colo.

The other day Stan and I were in the veggie department of a national grocery chain. We watched the produce manager pluck various foods off tables and chuck them into a cart. We asked where all the borderline fruits and veggies went once close to their "best by" date. He shared that they all went into TRASH. Throw out. Wasted. Not even saved for compost.

Why can't it go to the poor? To soup kitchens? To needy families? He replied that it used to, that their stores yearly gave away millions of pounds of still-good food. However, one person had picked up a sandwich from their store, which that person left out on his own counter too long and got sick. He then sued the store. As company policy now, this chain can no longer donate any still-viable food and this was all due to the actions of one individual. We have a truly valuable resource here that could help feed literally millions of hungry Americans going to waste. How sad is that.

In the flurry of holiday celebrations, feasting and gift giving, it is often the poor, hungry and homeless – 2-legged and 4-legged alike – who are most overlooked. Please remember to give where you can. It will be the best gift you ever receive.

What the ... ? Lou Dobbs wants to legalize illegals
World Net Daily
Ex-CNN anchor suddenly champions amnesty, ripped as 'pathetic sellout'
Former CNN anchor Lou Dobbs, the illegal immigration opponent with possible presidential aspirations, is stunning many today as he recasts himself as a champion of Hispanic immigrants, now looking to legalize millions of illegal aliens in the United States. Despite his long-held opposition to "amnesty," Dobbs now actually supports a plan to legalize undocumented workers.

Rense.com | New Study Shows Ten States Face Fiscal Crisis

By Stephen Lendman

The Pew Center on the States (PCS) "works to advance state policies that serve the public interest," through "credible research (to) advance nonpartisan, pragmatic solutions for pressing problems affecting Americans." Its new report titled, "Beyond California: States in Fiscal Peril," says the following:

"Many economists are optimistic that America's Great Recession may be turning the corner. States, however, are not celebrating. Plagued by record-setting revenue losses, the housing bust and credit crisis, high unemployment and a host of other challenges, (they've) struggled through nearly two years of budgetary pain - and are bracing for more."

California is worst off, but hardly alone. Others include Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. Pew's Managing Director on the States, Susan Urahn, says:

"America's economic recovery and prosperity hinge in key ways on how quickly and to what degree states emerge from the Great Recession." For many, their "fiscal health hangs in the balance." .... FULL ARTICLE

Bizarre calf mutilations found on Colorado ranch...

SAN LUIS, Colo. (AP) November 26, 2009 - A creepy string of calf mutilations in southern Colorado has a rancher and sheriff's officials mystified.

Four calves were found dead in a pasture just north of the New Mexico state line in recent weeks. The dead calves had their skins peeled back and organs cleared from the rib cage. One calf had its tongue removed.

But rancher Manuel Sanchez has found no signs of human attackers, such as footprints or ATV tracks. And there are no signs of an animal attack by a coyote or mountain lion. Usually predators leave pools of blood or drag marks from carrying away the livestock.

Two officers from the Costilla County Sheriff's Office have investigated the mutilations but say they don't know what's killing the calves.

"There's nothing really to go by," said Sanchez, who's ranched for nearly 50 years. "I can't figure it out."

A spokesman for the sheriff's office told The Pueblo Chieftain that investigators doubt a person butchered the calves because there is no blood at the scene.

"I've butchered a cow before and I know what kind of a mess it leaves," Sgt. James Chavez said.

Some in the area believe the mutilations are the work of aliens. An area UFO chaser, Chuck Zukowski of Colorado Springs, has been to the Costilla County pasture to investigate.

He told the paper there have been other unexplained calf mutilations in the area, including three in March. One of the other calves, found dead on a ranch near Trinidad, had its ears removed, Zukowski said.

"We're trying as much as we can to find a pattern," said Zukowski, who runs a UFO Web site called ufonut.com.

Sanchez said he has sold off his 32 remaining calves out of fear more would be mutilated. He hasn't decided how he'll manage the remaining 40 animals in his herd.

"It's a big loss for a small rancher," he said.

Chile's Mapuche Indians wage war against history

26 Nov 2009 - In his prison cell in Concepción, a town 400 miles south of the Chilean capital Santiago, an indigenous leader dreams of recovering his ancestral lands.

Three Mapuche natives guard their territories

The model for the "Mapuche nation" he foresees in the central southern region of Chile is based on the autonomous rule enjoyed by Basques and Catalans in Spain.

But the hurdles he faces are numerous, including governmental opposition that extends to imprisoning him and other militants, and a division among the Mapuche Indian communities about strategy.

"Recovering our land will cost us sweat, blood and tears," Llaitul said.

The 41-year-old leader of the radical indigenous Auroca Malleco Coordination was one of nine militants imprisoned after a 2008 attack against a state prosecutor and police.

Chile charged several of them under anti-terrorist legislation dating from its 1973 to 1990 military dictatorship, which permitted lengthy preventative detention.

Thanksgiving Morning News Update | November 26, 2009

Happy Thanksgiving - I send my prayers for everyone as always.

On Thanksgiving eve, Obama issues special Hajj message to world's Muslims

Statement by the President on Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha, as provided by the White House

November 25, 2009 - "Michelle and I would like to send our best wishes to all those performing Hajj this year, and to Muslims in America and around the world who are celebrating Eid-ul-Adha. The rituals of Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha both serve as reminders of the shared Abrahamic roots of three of the world’s major religions.

During Hajj, the world’s largest and most diverse gathering, three million Muslims from all walks of life – including thousands of American Muslims – will stand in prayer on Mount Arafat. The following day, Muslims around the world will celebrate Eid-ul-Adha and distribute food to the less fortunate to commemorate Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son out of obedience to God.

This year, I am pleased that the Department of Health and Human Services has partnered with the Saudi Health Ministry to prevent and limit the spread of H1N1 during Hajj. Cooperating on combating H1N1 is one of the ways we are implementing my administration's commitment to partnership in areas of mutual interest.

On behalf of the American people, we would like to extend our greetings during this Hajj season - Eid Mubarak."
Note: Wikipedia: Eid mubarak is a traditional Muslim greeting reserved for use on the festivals of Eid ul-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr. The phrase translates into English as "blessed festival", and can be paraphrased as "may you enjoy a blessed festival". Muslims wish each other Eid Mubarak after performing the Eid prayer. This celebration continues until the end of the day, and continues a further three days. It is notable that saying these exact words is a cultural tradition influenced by deep roots of religion in it; however, it is not part of any religious obligations. Speakers of Arabic might also add "kul 'am wantum bikhair." Eid refers to the occasion itself, and Mubarak means 'congratulations'.

The 'major caruncle' hanging under his beak can change color to fiery red to attract a mate. He also puffs himself up and creates a fan with his tail feathers to get attention. This Thanksgiving season he is safe on at the eight-acre farm, owned by Dawn Turbyfill, a retired Air Force radar technician from Wisconsin. It is dedicated to heritage breed conservation of Turkeys, Chickens, Geese, Ducks and Sheep.

November 25, 2009 - At News 7's Lynchburg Newsroom, a number of viewers called and said they felt the earthquake along the Route 29 corridor, near the Amherst/Nelson County line.
The epicenter was many miles away, but residents say they felt like the center was right underneath them.

Holly Jones was reading a book in the kitchen when her attention was shaken to something else. "Suddenly, I just heard this loud kind of noise and felt the foundation of the house shaking," says Holly Jones, who felt the earthquake. Her mother Sandy was in the next room. "I heard this horrible noise and it sounded to me like something had blown up in the basement," says Sandy Jones, who also felt it. Both Sandy and Holly thought the washing machine had exploded. "I had been doing laundry and I thought, well there goes the washing machine, but maybe we better get out of here, because it was so loud and it went on so long." In a house where the Thanksgiving dinner table is already set, there were moments of confusion and unease. "It kind of startled me more afterwards. I was really feeling kind of scared," said Holly "I know it probably didn't last as long as it seemed, to me I thought it just kept going," says Sandy Jones.

Down the road, strange rumbles brought Veryl Campbell to her front yard. "Then, all of a sudden it was a thud, and I thought oh!" She worried it was coming from the church next door. "I thought 'oh my gosh, somebody has run into the side of the house!'" says Campbell. She soon realized her house was fine. "I was relieved that it was an earthquake," says Campbell.

"It was a minor earthquake," says Gary Roakes, Amherst County Director of Public Safety. Roakes says Amherst 911 was flooded with calls. "Fortunately, this was just a small earthquake that just startled people because it's one of those things that people aren't aware of. They don't think of it happening here," says Roakes.
Back at the Jones house, there's no sign of an earthquake. Pictures on the wall and plates on the bookshelf never moved. The only thing that shook was a plant on the fridge. "I wouldn't want to experience anything more, because I know this house has a pretty solid foundation and it was definitely shaking," says Sandy Jones.
Emergency officials in Nelson, Amherst, and Appomattox counties say there haven't been any reports of major damage or serious injury.

SI / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report

The Global Volcanism Program database for Volcanoes of Canada and the western USA currently contains 81 volcano names.

Wish I could find the page that was once there that you could easily link to see each of the specific volcanoes - now it seems you have to run a list from the following link. It appears to me personally, in the last 6+ months since I visited this particular listing - they've made it more difficult to see full list of 81 volcanoes. Click the below link to generate your own list.

List Link: http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/find_names.cfm

Large red triangles show volcanoes with known or inferred Holocene eruptions; small red triangles mark volcanoes with possible, but uncertain Holocene eruptions or Pleistocene volcanoes with major thermal activity. Yellow triangles distinguish volcanoes of other regions.

300 evacuated from villages in Vanuatu due to gas and ash from volcano

Posted at 01:27 on 26 November, 2009 UTC

More than 300 people are to be evacuated from today from three villages in the north of Vanuatu because of gas and ash fall from a volcano.

The government has sent the country’s paramilitary and mobile forces, and the Vanuatu Red Cross Society to monitor the evacuation from the west of the island of Gaua in Torba province.

The director of the National Disaster Management Office, Job Esau says people have been suffering from respiratory problems and diarrhoea in the last few days as a strong wind has carried the gas and ash.

Reports from Gaua says two boats from the police and health department in Torba are starting to evacuate people this morning. They are starting with children, women, the elderly and disabled.

Mr Esau says they will negotiate with ships owners to help with the evacuation because the two motor boats can not carry enough people.

Chiefs from two villages, Namasari and Lembot, from the east of Gaua met yesterday about housing the relocated people. At the moment, the National Disaster Management Office has maintained the level of alert on 2 but Esau says during the past days, ash fall and the gas has increased.

Obama and a climate conference with no real agenda

November 26, 2009

President Obama will attend the Copenhagen climate talks in December, despite the fact that global warming has recently been shown to be a fraud.

According to the the Los Angeles Times Greenspace blog ,

The White House will also announce today that the United States will commit, in the talks, to reduce its emissions of the heat-trapping gases scientists blame for global warming "in the range of" 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020, the official said. That's the target set out in the climate bill the House passed in June.

[...]

White House officials said the decision to attend came after productive climate discussions between Obama and the heads of China and India, two developing nations whose participation is seen as critical to any successful effort to avert catastrophic climate change."

Apparently, "White House officials" don't read much. The news that global warming is a fraud based on falsified data may not have penetrated the truth-resistant noggins at CNN and other mainstream obamulators, but more credible sources worldwide have it on the front page.

Clearly, Climategate is a story no sensible person dare ignore. Moreover, it's growing, as links between and among data-faking scientists, the United Nations, and complicit government officials in many countries are exposed. Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) yesterday called for an investigation by the Senate Environment and Public Affairs Committee.

Climategate is gaining force, a tsunami of truth poised to strike.

Meanwhile, Obama suns himself on a beach, surrounded by a crowd of admirers. A messenger runs by shouting, ‘There's a wave coming! Get off the beach!" He doesn't even break through the crowd. Obama doesn't even hear him.

Or does he? I can't imagine Obama being so politically incompetent as to let Climategate damage him. I predict the aftermath of the wave of truth will find a a certain "White House official" flattened amongst the wreckage, along with Obama's warmist czars Holdren (science) and Chu (Energy). As Climategate deluges the mainstream media, these and other White House warmists are likely to resign "to spend more time with family" or start a new liberal think tank. What are czars for, if not to take a dunk for The One?

As for Obama himself, I think he'll end up lounging in a cabana, smoking a cigarette and looking out over the drowned bodies of his former advisers ... dry, cool and still in power. So deep is the mainstream media's entrancement over him, I expect it will take more than one tsunami of truth to bring him down. White House media manipulators will convince Obamulatory news organizations to focus on an issue to crowd out climate truth (the Afghan war, the flu, they'll find a front pager), allowing Obama to take cover in the new ‘crisis'.

The Australian | Garlic price soars as China's top performing asset - H1N1 virus and that garlic may offer some immunity from it

November 26, 2009 7:27AM SHANGHAI stocks have done very well, copper has soared and property has been blazing. Not one of those assets, though, can match the roaring returns on a kilogram of Chinese garlic.

In the garlic-producing heartland of Jinxiang, wholesale market prices of the pungent clove -- caught in a tornado of easy liquidity and artificial market forces -- have been whisked into the stratosphere.

Average prices, according to a report from the Ministry of Commerce, have hit 6.14yuan (97 cents) a kilogram, having surged 286 per cent since March.

In some markets, the price has risen fortyfold this year, according to Jerry Lou, a Morgan Stanley analyst. In Jinxiang, the market activity has become so frenzied that fever for the stinking produce is affecting the financial sector.

Local banks and cash machines have found themselves running out of money as speculators withdraw hard currency to fight for their purchases. The astonishing surge in the price of garlic makes it the best-performing Chinese asset class of the year.

Two factors are driving the gains.

Garlic, Mr Lou writes, has become a barometer for China's wider issues of bubble formation. The massive flood of liquidity -- created by the huge government stimulus package and unprecedented bank lending -- has made a diverse range of assets the target of speculation. Garlic has joined property and stocks as a favourite market for cashed-up punters.

Helping things along has been a technical squeeze on the market. Chinese garlic is a big export commodity -- 60 per cent of the garlic used in American restaurants, for example, is Chinese in origin.

But last year China reduced its total garlic planting areas by 50 per cent, diminishing the overall supply and giving speculators a reason to assume future shortages.

The H1N1 virus, and the suggestion that garlic may offer some immunity from it, has also had an effect. Some believe that the suggestion may have been promoted by traders in Jinxiang.

Nevertheless, the theory has been adopted beyond China's borders: the Moldovan Army has added 0.5 ounces of garlic to soldiers' daily rations to protect them from the ravages of swine flu -- and make their food taste better.

Miami Herald | GAO: Fraud hits disabled veterans contracts

A government investigation found that fraud and abuse are diverting millions of dollars in contracts intended to go to businesses owned by service-disabled veterans.

November 25, 2009 - Millions of dollars worth of government contracts designated for service-disabled veterans are being siphoned off by fraud and abuse, according to a recent government report.

In a case-study of 10 firms, including one Florida company, the Government Accountability Office found ineligible companies had won about $100 million worth of contracts earmarked for service-disabled veteran-owned companies.

The program is vulnerable to fraud and abuse, which could result in legitimate service-disabled veterans losing contracts to ineligible firms,'' according to the report, which was presented to Congress last week.

Florida is home to 1,421 service-disabled veteran-owned businesses, according to the government's Central Contractor Registry. And while the government has a mandate to set aside 3 percent of all federal contracts for such firms, it often misses the mark.

During fiscal year 2008 -- the latest data available -- service-disabled small businesses won $3.3 billion worth of federal contracts, or about 1 percent. But the GAO study suggests that even those modest results are overstated.

In one case, the GAO found a full-time Department of Defense contractor, who was disabled and worked at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, was passing along a $900,000 contract to manufacture furniture to his wife's company. She, in turn, passed it along to another manufacturer that actually completed the work.

The investigation found that while officials at MacDill were aware of the illegal pass through,'' they approved the contract anyway.

In another case, a Las Vegas company won a $7.5 million contract to maintain trailers in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Even after it was discovered the owners were not service disabled, they continued to receive service-disabled contracts, the investigation found.

A World War 2 Veteran sends a letter to Obama
Its a must read for Every American on Thanksgiving, if any Reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, There Too

WW II Battleship sailor tells Obama to shape up or ship out !

This venerable and much honored WW II vet is well known in Hawaii for his seventy-plus years of service to patriotic organizations and causes all over the country. A humble man without a political bone in his body, he has never spoken out before about a government official, until now. He dictated this letter to a friend, signed it and mailed it to the president.

Dear President Obama,
My name is Harold Estes, approaching 95 on December 13 of this year. People meeting me for the first time don’t believe my age because I remain wrinkle free and pretty much mentally alert.
I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos’n Mate. Now I live in a “rest home” located on the western end of Pearl Harbor, allowing me to keep alive the memories of 23 years of service to my country. One of the benefits of my age, perhaps the only one, is to speak my mind, blunt and direct even to the head man.
So here goes.
I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do, but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish.
I can’t figure out what country you are the president of. You fly around the world telling our friends and enemies despicable lies like: " We’re no longer a Christian nation”
"America is arrogant" – (Your wife even announced to the world, ”America is mean-spirited”. Please tell her to try preaching that nonsense to 23 generations of our war dead buried all over the globe who died for no other reason than to free a whole lot of strangers from tyranny and hopelessness.)
I’d say shame on the both of you, but I don’t think you like America, nor do I see an ounce of gratefulness in anything you do, for the obvious gifts this country has given you. To be without shame or gratefulness is a dangerous thing for a man sitting in the White House.
After 9/11 you said,” America hasn’t lived up to her ideals.”
Which ones did you mean? Was it the notion of personal liberty that 11,000 farmers and shopkeepers died for to win independence from the British? Or maybe the ideal that no man should be a slave to another man, that 500,000 men died for in the Civil War? I hope you didn’t mean the ideal 470,000 fathers, brothers, husbands, and a lot of fellas I knew personally died for in WWII, because we felt real strongly about not letting any nation push us around, because we stand for freedom.
I don’t think you mean the ideal that says equality is better than discrimination. You know the one that a whole lot of white people understood when they helped to get you elected.
Take a little advice from a very old geezer, young man.
Shape up and start acting like an American. If you don’t, I’ll do what I can to see you get shipped out of that fancy rental on Pennsylvania Avenue.

You were elected to lead not to bow, apologize and kiss the hands of murderers and corrupt leaders who still treat their people like slaves.

And just who do you think you are telling the American people not to jump to conclusions and condemn that Muslim major who killed 13 of his fellow soldiers and wounded dozens more. You mean you don’t want us to do what you did when that white cop used force to subdue that black college professor in Massachusetts, who was putting up a fight? You don’t mind offending the police calling them stupid but you don’t want us to offend Muslim fanatics by calling them what they are, terrorists.
One more thing. I realize you never served in the military and never had to defend your country with your life, but you’re the Commander-in- Chief now, son. Do your job. When your battle-hardened field General asks you for 40,000 more troops to complete the mission, give them to him. But if you’re not in this fight to win, then get out. The life of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you’re thinking of.
You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president.
You’re not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy. That’s not our greatest threat. Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now.
And I sure as hell don’t want to think my president is the enemy in this final battle.
Sincerely,
Harold B. Estes

MedicalNewsToday.com | Global HIV Infections Down 17 Per Cent

November 26, 2009

A new report shows that global new HIV infection rates have fallen by 17 per cent and suggests that HIV prevention programmes are making a difference beyond the natural course of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

2009 AIDS epidemic update was released on Tuesday by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) at a press conference in Shanghai.

The drop of 17 per cent reflects new data that shows in some parts of the world such as East Asia, the rate of new HIV infection has dropped by nearly 25 per cent from 2001 to 2008. In South and South East Asia it has dropped by 10 per cent, and in sub-Saharan Africa it has dropped by about 15 per cent, over the same period.

In Eastern Europe it has levelled off, while in some countries it looks like the new HIV infection rate is on the rise again.

Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS, spoke about the good and the bad news highlighted in the report. Full Article

Why Canned Soups Can Be Dangerous to Your Health

By: Dr. Mercola
November 24 2009 | 67,363 views

The food processing world is reeling right now one day after a shocking new series of tests released by Consumer Reports revealed that many leading brands of canned foods contain Bisphenol A (BPA)—a toxic chemical linked to health risks including reproductive abnormalities, neurological effects, heightened risk of breast and prostate cancers, diabetes, heart disease and other serious health problems.

BPA is used in the lining of cans and the toxin leaches from the lining into the food. According to Consumer Reports just a couple of servings of canned food can exceed scientific limits on daily exposure for children.

The federal government is currently studying the dangers of BPA and advocates are calling on the FDA to ban the use of BPA in food and beverage packaging by the end of the year. Companies in other industries, including Wal-Mart, Target, Nalgene, and Babies R Us have already made commitments to stop using BPA.

Transparent sea cucumber, Enypniastes

This undated photo released by Census of Marine Life and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution shows a transparent sea cucumber, Enypniastes, creeping forward on its many tentacles at about 2 cm per minute while sweeping detritus-rich sediment into its mouth at 2,750 meters in the Northern Gulf of Mexico.
