Bin Laden blasts US for climate change

Jan 29, 7:46 AM (ET)

CAIRO (AP) - Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has called for the world to boycott American goods and the U.S. dollar, blaming the United States and other industrialized countries for global warming, according to a new audiotape released Friday.

In the tape, broadcast in part on Al-Jazeera television, bin Laden warned of the dangers of climate change and says that the way to stop it is to bring "the wheels of the American economy" to a halt.

He blamed Western industrialized nations for hunger, desertification and floods across the globe, and called for "drastic solutions" to global warming, and "not solutions that partially reduce the effect of climate change."

Bin Laden has mentioned climate change and global warning in past messages, but the latest tape was his first dedicated to the topic. The speech, which included almost no religious rhetoric, could be an attempt by the terror leader to give his message an appeal beyond Islamic militants.

The al-Qaida leader also targeted the U.S. economy in the recording, calling for a boycott of American products and an end to the dollar's domination as a world currency.

"We should stop dealings with the dollar and get rid of it as soon as possible," he said. "I know that this has great consequences and grave ramifications, but it is the only means to liberate humanity from slavery and dependence on America.

He argued that such steps would also hamper Washington's war efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The new message, whose authenticity could not immediately be confirmed, comes after a bin Laden tape released last week in which he endorsed a failed attempt to blow up an American airliner on Christmas Day.

A major new report on secret detention policies around the world, conducted by four independent UN human rights experts, concludes that, "On a global scale, secret detention in connection with counter-terrorist policies remains a serious problem," and, "If resorted to in a widespread and systematic manner, secret detention might reach the threshold of a crime against humanity."

The 226-page report, published on Wednesday in an advance unedited version, is the culmination of a year-long joint study by the Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism, the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances. North Korea fires more artillery towards South

Reuters
Friday, January 29th, 2010

North Korea fired artillery toward a disputed sea border with its southern neighbor for the third straight day on Friday in a move seen by the South’s president as a ploy by Pyongyang to put pressure on regional powers.

President Lee Myung-bak also said the North’s troubled economy was reeling under U.N. sanctions to punish its nuclear test last year, but he added that the destitute state was nowhere near collapse and leader Kim Jong-il was firmly in charge.

“There was the sound of about 20 artillery rounds above North Korean waters near (the South’s) Yeonpyeong island,” an official with the military’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said by telephone.

The North has fed hundreds of rounds of artillery this week in the direction of a disputed naval border with the South that landed in the North’s waters. The firing along the heavily armed border lined with thousands of artillery pieces has not resulted in any injuries or damage.

U.S. To Sell $6B in Arms to Taiwan; Further Strain Chinese Relations

New York City, NY 1/29/2010 07:02 PM GMT (TransWorldNews)

The Obama administration approved a $6 billion plus arms sale to Taiwan on Friday furthering threatening the state of U.S., China relations.

China has been consistently less than receptive to the administration’s pleas to contribute to the global economic recovery, putting stress on a relationship already plagued by clashing ideologies.

Most recently, China’s decision to tighten its credit as a means of curbing inflation within the nation’s booming economy has negatively affected the U.S. and global recovery. While the sale to Taiwan may be unrelated to this recent development, it could also be seen as a passive aggressive response to China insular political approach.

China has expressed their disapproval with what they believe to be American’s meddling ways and this latest move could inspire some degree of retaliation on the part of the nation. A speech against the nation’s human rights policies by Secretary of State Hilary Clinton were followed by the decision to increase the cash on reserve at Chinese banks. While the two may not be entirely connected, it may be wise to consider the possibility of a response from China.

According to the Pentagon website, Taiwan’s purchase would include helicopters, PATRIOT Advanced Capability-3 missiles and other supports to Taiwan's defense communications network.

The sale is will not be final until it completes a congressional review.

China in joint anti-pirate force

Unlike some forces, China has been far more willing to deploy its special forces to board ships and protect them

January 30, 2010
Sydney Morning Heral

IN the waters off the east African coast, bands of Somali pirates have been terrorising merchant ships. But the havoc has prompted an intriguing international experiment: for the first time, the Chinese navy has co-operated with other forces - including Australia's - in a large-scale operation.

At a conference in Sydney yesterday, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Chinese navy, Rear Admiral Xiao Xinnian, gave a rare glimpse into China's role in the operation. Since 2008, he said, Chinese forces have escorted more than 1400 commercial ships across the pirate-ridden Gulf of Aden.

Rear Admiral Xiao said the Chinese navy was still developing its tactics but had benefited from the co-operation with foreign forces.

Republic of China (ROC), commonly known as Taiwan

Taiwan President Ma drives home beef trade policy to U.S. congressmen

San Francisco, Jan. 26 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou drove home Taiwan's stance on banning imports of certain risky parts of U.S. beef to 12 U.S. congressional members over the phone Tuesday.

Ma, who arrived in San Francisco Monday for an overnight layover en route to Honduras and the Dominican Republic for official visits, spent Wednesday morning in his hotel room talking on the phone with 11 U.S. senators and representatives to seek their understanding of Taiwan's beef trade policy.
In the morning, he also met with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who paid Ma a courtesy visit.
Later in the day, Ma visited San Jose-based pharmaceutical company IMPAX, which is run by a Taiwanese expatriate.
On his way to IMPAX, Ma also spoke by phone with another congressman on Taiwan's controversial partial U.S. beef import ban.
Sources close to Ma's entourage said more than half of the congressional members to whom Ma has reached out are from agricultural states or constituencies.
According to the sources, none of the senators or representatives represented the Obama administration. They were expressing their own concerns to Ma about Taiwan's policy toward U.S. beef imports.
Ma did not ask the congressional members to lobby the Obama administration on Taiwan's behalf but instead briefed them on his government's stance in dealing with the beef trade row.
He explained that Taiwan welcomes U.S. bone-in beef with the exception of ground beef and bovine offal over public health concerns, the sources said.
In their conversations with Ma, some congressional members said they were worried Taiwan may further bar imports of U.S. bone-in beef after denying market access to ground beef and beef offal.
In response, Ma said the amendment passed by Taiwan's legislature to block entry of U.S. ground beef and bovine offal is a response to public misgivings about mad cow disease.
While the Taiwanese public's concern might lack scientific support, Ma said, a democratic government should respect public opinion.
"We have allowed entry of U.S. bone-in beef first so that our consumers can gradually build up confidence in the product quality, " Ma was quoted as having told American congressional members. When Taiwanese consumers become confident in U.S. bone-in beef, Taiwan may gradually further open its market.
After listening to Ma's explanations, most of the congressmen expressed their understanding of Taiwan's stance. Some even thanked him for his administration's efforts in resolving the row, the sources said.
Among the congressmen with whom Ma spoke was Dave Camp, who joined with three colleagues in writing a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk recently, demanding that the U.S. government suspend trade talks with Taiwan until the latter lifts its ban on U.S. ground beef and bovine offal.
In addition to the beef issue, some U.S. congressional members recognized Taiwan's speedy efforts to help with post-disaster relief work in earthquake-ravaged Haiti in their talks with Ma. Arms sale issues were also discussed, the sources said.
Other congressional members with whom Ma spoke included U.S.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Kit Bond, vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
This is Ma's fourth overseas trip since assuming office in May 2008. He will attend the Jan. 27 inauguration of Honduran President-elect Porfirio Lobo Sosa and then travel to the Dominican Republic for a brief visit to express his concern for neighboring Haiti after the Caribbean ally was struck by a deadly magnitude-7 earthquake Jan. 12.
Ma's chartered flight is carrying 10 tons of disaster relief supplies which will be unloaded in the Dominican Republic for delivery by road to the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.

On his way home, Ma will also make a transit stop in Los Angeles.

Taiwan president Ma departs Los Angeles for Taiwan after mayoral `power breakfast`

When asked by reporters what score he would give to the six day visit to Honduras and the Dominican Republic, Ma stated that ``I will not grade it for you!``

Ma afterward placed a telephone call to Representative Howard Berman, a Democratic from California, who is chairman of the House Foreign Relations CommitteeA senior government official stated that the ``breakthroughs`` showed that ``these are natural`` and confirms messages communicated by the United States, namely that the dispute over the U.S. - Taiwan beef importation protocol, is simply an ``economic issue`` and will not influence overall U.S.-Taiwan relations and indicates that Ma`s ``pragmatic, cautious and low-profile`` diplomacy had earned Washington`s confidence. ...

Taiwan to seek U.S. arms sales

San Francisco, Jan. 25 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou said Monday that Taiwan will continue seeking U.S. arms sales to beef up its defenses.
Ma, who arrived in San Francisco that day for an overnight layover en route to a diplomatic visit to Central America and the Caribbean, made the remarks during a closed-door meeting with U.S. Congressman David Wu (D-Ore.).
As for whether Taiwan will be able to secure the sale of F-16 C/D fighter jets, Ma told Wu that the sale will depend on the attitude of the U.S.
He said his administration will continue trying its best to secure arms supplies from the United States.
Ma's remarks came amid reports that the F-16 C/Ds are not likely to be included in an arms package that the administration of U.S
President Barack Obama will approve for sale to Taiwan.
An Associated Press report said a day earlier that the Obama administration had notified Congress that it has decided to sell weapons to Taiwan.
According to the report, the move is expected to worsen already tense ties between China and the United States. China claims sovereignty over Taiwan and tends to vehemently oppose any arms sales to Taiwan, while the U.S. government is bound by the Taiwan Relations Act to ensure the nation's defenses.
The AP report said the arms package is likely to include UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missiles and material related to Taiwan's defense communications network.
The sale has been widely expected as it is part of an US$11 billion arms package originally pledged to Taiwan by former U.S.
President George W. Bush in 2001. The package has been provided in stages because of political and budgetary considerations in Taiwan and the U.S
The report quoted U.S. congressional aides with direct knowledge of meetings between Obama administration officials and Congress members on relevant issues as having said that the package is not likely to include the F-16s.
The exclusion of the planes would help the U.S. dodge a thorny issue, according to the report.
The congressional aides also said it is unclear when an official announcement will come but that it could be soon, according to the AP report.

Official US policy: kill American citizens when President/Fuhrer declares them “terrorists”

January 29th, 2010

Carl Herman
Examiner.com

I had previously reported that US citizens are being tortured by our own government when the executive branch says the magic word: “terrorist.” Under the 2006 Military Commissions Act (MCA), such Americans can be detained forever without legal right of habeas corpus. If those Americans are brought to trial rather than detained and tortured at the whim of the tyrants, the US government has created an unconstitutional system of judgment and execution: the President/dictator slurring the American as “terrorist” also says who the judges are to determine guilt with available penalty of execution. These three military tribunal judges are allowed to accept “secret evidence” from the government that is unavailable for the defendant to view or challenge if two other words are said: “national security.”

In Patrick Henry’s immortal “Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death” speech, he said, “[I]t is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth.” Never have Henry’s words been truer than they are today. For too long, good men have turned a blind eye to the obvious reality that America’s Ship of State has swerved significantly off course. In fact, it is no hyperbole to say that America’s Ship of State is completely rudderless and, absent a speedy course correction, seems destined to crash against the rocks of oppression and economic ruin in the very near future. For anyone willing to open their eyes, the manifestations of America’s almost-certain collision with history are everywhere.

The announcement of the new Cabinet took place during a ceremony one day after Morales was sworn in on Friday.

Honduran Coup d'Etat a "Win" for the US?

TruthOut

.... Disappointment stemming from the contradiction between statements of a recently inaugurated President Obama to Latin American heads of state at the Summit of the Americas in April of 2009, and a virtually unchanged US policy has been articulated by leaders throughout Latin America. Three recent "moments" have contributed to a rapid readjustment of expectations. First was the coup in Honduras and refusal of the US to take proactive policy measures against it. Second was the announcement of seven new US military bases in Colombia. And the third was Secretary of State Clinton's declaration that Latin America countries should "think twice about flirting with Iran."

The willingness of Latin American countries to challenge US positions indicates a slowly changing balance of power in the hemisphere. Soon after Arturo Valenzuela was confirmed as assistant secretary of state for the Western Hemisphere, he paid a visit to the Mercosur countries. Far from the diplomatic protocol to which the US is accustomed, in Brazil and Argentina, the first two countries which he visited, Mr. Valenzuela was not received by the president or the foreign minister in either country. In a press statement near the time of Valenzuela's visit, Brazil's Foreign Minister Celso Amorim criticized the US for being "extremely tolerant" of the coup and the de facto regime.

What seems most clear is that the US State Department remains mired in an outdated cold war mentality, failing to recognize and adapt to the profound and complex changes that have occurred in Latin America during the last decade. Unfortunately, there seems to be few signs that this will change anytime soon. ....

If you read any economic, financial, or political analysis for 2010 that doesn’t mention the food shortage looming next year, throw it in the trash, as it is worthless. There is overwhelming, undeniable evidence that the world will run out of food next year. When this happens, the resulting triple digit food inflation will lead panicking central banks around the world to dump their foreign reserves to appreciate their currencies and lower the cost of food imports, causing the collapse of the dollar, the treasury market, derivative markets, and the global financial system. The US will experience economic disintegration.

Coping: Bot Run Possible

I admit it - I've been lobbying Cliff of HalfPastHuman.com to do another predictive linguistics run. There are a number of issues which I'd sure like better resolution on, and once things get into the 3-weeks to 3-month window, often the results out of the rickety time machine get more precise and since I am trading the market decline, a little more precision would be useful.

It's not a sure thing since there have been so many rip-offs of the report, recapturing the initial investment is a problem. While Cliff's been working on tuning the lexicon (language is drifty stuff, for sure) his colleague Igor is off to look at a 3 X 9 RAID array today. When we talk of 'heavy processing' we're talking heavy processing.

I'll keep you posted on this as the decision-making process moves along, still many moving pieces and I am planning to press Cliff to use a distribution system that can insert a unique serial number in each of the reports so we can track back the perps who trash the work.

Which gets me to explaining that it's not just the ripping off of intellectual content that's an issue. It's that when there's any discussion of the web bots it shows up around the generalize netosphere and has to be filtered out otherwise it causes a kind of feedbacks. In other words, what we found out in the early going of the project was that if too much about the future leaked out, it could color what people thought about when discussing it - and that in turn would lessen the accuracy.

Nowadays in addition to filtering off my site(s) and filtering from the web bot discussion group, the filtering to prevent feedback issue has continued to grow and that's still more work.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go look at the Wikipedia entry for web bot project and you ought to be able to figure it out.

One item in particular we'd like more visibility on: The linguistics had been suggesting that a second round of engineered flu (or similar) would come out of the winter Olympics up at Whistler Mountain outside Vancouver, B.C. Well, now we read the article asking "

Could Vancouver 2010 be the next 9/11?" and we get to wondering about the previous run and how this hypothetical attack could be carried out?

I always get twitchery when linguistics and intel start moving to one side of the room. Adding to the air of mystery: The head of the BC Privacy Office has been shut down leaderless. This leaves lower mainland press without a way to file what's the Canadian equivalent to FOI (Freedom of Information Act) requests. Hmmmm..

NASA: Firefly Mission to Study Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes

01.29.2010

January 29, 2010: High-energy bursts of gamma rays typically occur far out in space, perhaps near black holes or other high-energy cosmic phenomena. So imagine scientists' surprise in the mid-1990s when they found these powerful gamma ray flashes happening right here on Earth, in the skies overhead.

They're called Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes, or TGFs, and very little is known about them. They seem to have a connection with lightning, but TGFs themselves are something entirely different.

Right: An artist's concept of TGFs. Credit: NASA/Robert Kilgore [more]

"In fact," says Doug Rowland of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, "before the 1990s nobody knew they even existed. And yet they're the most potent natural particle accelerators on Earth."

Individual particles in a TGF acquire a huge amount of energy, sometimes in excess of 20 mega-electron volts (MeV). In contrast, the colorful auroras that light up the skies at high latitudes are powered by particles with less than one thousandth as much energy.

At this stage, there are more questions about TGFs than answers. What causes these high-energy flashes? Do they help trigger lightning--or does lightning trigger them? Could they be responsible for some of the high-energy particles in the Van Allen radiation belts, which can damage satellites?

Defense Secretary Cohen's 1997 Warning about Scalar EM Geotechnical Terrorism

“Others [terrorists] are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves… So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations…It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our [counterterrorism] efforts.”

- Secretary of Defense William Cohen at an April 1997 counterterrorism conference sponsored by former Senator Sam Nunn. Quoted from DoD News Briefing, Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen, Q&A at the Conference on Terrorism, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and U.S. Strategy, University of Georgia, Athens, Apr. 28, 1997.

Cap And Trade Scam To Be Enforced At State Level

Globalists intent on ushering in a zero-growth post-industrial society are bypassing the federal government’s stuttering efforts to implement the cap and trade scam and going directly to the states in an effort to impose their control freak tax on the very life-giving gas that we all exhale – carbon dioxide.

The United Nations is just a debating society and a 'front' for banks

"Today, America would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order. Tomorrow they will be grateful! This is especially true if they were told that there were an outside threat from beyond, whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will plead to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well-being granted to them by the World Government."
