It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.

PARTING SHOTS: This morning, Feb. 14th, one and possibly two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) billowed over the sun's western limb.

The source of the blasts appears to be a complex of sunspots (1045 and 1048) just now disappearing over the western limb. If so, NASA's STEREO Ahead spacecraft would have had a direct view of the double eruption. STEREO images are temporarily unavailable, however; we'll bring them to you as soon as possible. The CMEs were not directed at Earth, so our planet should feel no effects from the expanding clouds. http://spaceweather.com/

US airstrikes rain down on Marjah, where 1,000 Taliban fighters are believed to be hiding.

The assault is the first phase of an operation to loosen the militants’ grip on the area, and is seen as a key test of President Barack Obama’s recent troop surge.

At the end of day one NATO said key objectives had been secured and the military are moving to win the support of the Afghan population.

So far two coalition soldiers have lost their lives during the assault ...

Argentina - Beef prices rise 140% since December

Meat Trade News Daily
February 14, 2010

Argentina's government has courted more controversy after a meeting between President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and farmers' representatives deteriorated into an angry war of words over who is to blame for higher beef prices.

The government is already embroiled in an unprecedented row after its attempted use of Central Bank reserves to pay off Argentina's debt, which led to the removal of Central Bank Gov. Martin Redrado and a public reproach from the High Court.

At the farmers' meeting, Fernandez conceded that meat prices in Argentina had risen beyond reasonable levels but blamed the hikes on profiteering by the livestock producers.

The president's comments provoked an immediate volley of angry retorts from the farmers' representatives, who said her comments were offensive and did not take account of the government's own policies as the cause of the hikes.

Recent increases in food prices, coupled with shortages of electricity and other outages, have heightened discontent in Argentina. The rising prices of beef, Argentina's staple diet, have caused widespread outrage that the government so far has been unable to deal with, choosing instead to blame one or other sector of the economy.

Lack of progress on poverty-reduction programs for Argentina's outlying areas has also eroded the government's popularity.

Added to that has been public anger over charges the president's spouse and former president, Nestor Kirchner, dabbled in insider trading while buying $2 million in U.S. currency soon after the 2008 financial crisis. Kirchner has denied any wrongdoing, but opposition critics of Fernandez have fanned anti-government sentiment and latent resentment of the presidential couple's financial dealings has given rise to published comments and criticism in the country's print and broadcast media. Nebraska lost 200 farms and ranches during 2009.

Posted: 6:05 PM Feb 13, 2010

The Nebraska Field Office of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service says there were 47,200 farms and ranches at the end of 2009, less then 1 percent fewer than in 2008.

Operations with more than $100,000 in agricultural sales grew by 1,200, while the number with sales under $100,000 declined by 1,400. The USDA says the decline in smaller farms appears to be the result of higher commodity prices pushing existing farms into higher sales categories.

There were 45.6 million acres of land in Nebraska's farms and ranches, which was unchanged from the previous two years. The average size of an operation increased by 4 acres from 2008 to 966 acres.

For once the battle between security and privacy ended in favour of the latter. The data was to be accessed in the name of fighting terrorism, but MEPs have given a bloody nose to an increasingly information-hungry US.

Yellowstone Earthquake Swarm Summary as of 11 February 2010

The rate of earthquake occurrence in the Madison Plateau area is now at background levels. As of February 11, 2010 4:00 PM MST there have been 1,805 earthquakes located. The swarm began January 17, 2010 around 1:00 PM MST about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of the Old Faithful area on the northwestern edge of the Yellowstone Caldera. Swarms have occurred in this area several times over the past 30 years. Visual observation of landforms and geothermal features by Yellowstone National Park personnel did not show any changes that could be attributed to the earthquakes.

This swarm is now the second largest recorded swarm at Yellowstone. It was longer (in time) and included more earthquakes than last year's swarm beneath Yellowstone Lake (December '08/January '09).

Daytime UFO seen by many and filmed in Mexico

Allnewsweb.com - ‎Feb 12, 2010‎

A UFO that was seen by multiple witnesses, one of whom managed to capture the object on film (below), has recent received substantial publicity in Mexico.

The UFO sighting took place around three weeks ago, on January 21 at midday in the vicinity of Mexico City. Well known Mexican UFO researcher and personality Ana Luisa Cid received the footage along with the testimony of the witnesses.

The Witness who managed to get the remarkable footage, Alfredo Mosco, described the object as 'very large, very high up, luminous and morphing in shape'.Alfredo Mosco's wife, child and father saw the UFO as did another local couple.

Interestingly a UFO enthusiast and regular sky-watcher, Daniel Sanchez Rosales, who lives a few neighbourhoods away, also recorded the same object, albeit four hours later.

Mr Mosco provided the following testimony to Ana Luis Cid;
'My wife and myself were working outdoors near our house, since we make wood furniture for a major corporation. It was time to varnish, when my mother comes and tells us that the man who sells newspapers told him he saw an odd object in the sky, not moving, saying he had spent more than half an hour watching it. Then we looked up and noticed it. It was large, was very high, with a strange glow: similar to light from welding. It remained static and I could record it. This was the first time I got to make a video of that type. I have had sightings before, as a child, but never managed to record them.'

Walls of water overwhelm North California surfing contest

The Associated Press

Feb. 13, 2010, 6:46PM

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — Despite big wave warnings, two walls of water caught dozens of spectators off-guard and knocked them to a rocky beach as they watched a Northern California surfing contest Saturday, leaving some with broken bones but sparing them from being pulled into the ocean.

Thirteen people swept from a seawall had significant injuries, including broken legs and hands, said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Battalion Chief Scott Jalbert. He reduced the official count from the 15 reported earlier in the day but said others treated at the beach for injuries such as scrapes and bruises were not included in the total. At least three of the injured were taken to hospitals.

Jalbert estimated "a couple hundred" people were on the seawall at the southern tip of Mavericks Beach when the waves struck, upstaging the surfing competition that draws some of the world's top surfers.

The waves were 5 feet to 6 feet high by the time they hit — "small but strong," he said.

"Nobody was swept away into the water. They were just swept onto the beach area pretty hard," Jalbert said. "It's pretty rocky." ...
