Congressional Panel Deeply Concerned Over Commercial Real Estate -- Over the next few years, a wave of commercial real estate loan failures could threaten America‘s already-weakened financial system. Health-care plan redoubles 'marriage penalty' -- Congressional proposals could penalize couples $10,000 for saying 'I do'. Bills pending in Congress that would nationalize health care by setting up mandatory insurance purchases and fines for not complying could penalize married couples $10,000 annually and are a direct attack on marriage, families and the church because of their discriminatory provisions, according to a congressional candidate.

Senators Unveil Long Awaited Jobs Bill -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid pared back a wide range of job-creating proposals to craft a relatively modest $15 billion measure focused on tax breaks and construction, with the aim of overcoming the partisan gridlock that has stalled many major initiatives in this session of Congress.

Wrong Kind of Buzz Over Google Buzz -- However, what tech pundits have mostly overlooked is a peculiar privacy choice made by Google's designers: unless you tinker with Buzz's settings, a partial list of your most-emailed Gmail contacts might be automatically made public (see this post over at Silicon Alley Insider; it appears that contacts are made public to those who already had a Google Profile account before Buzz; also see this excellent and very angry post at CNet for additional background).

Reid's Office Wins Best Lie of the Year -- Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher in southern California, was doing some personal work on her own family tree. Bill Nye the Science Guy: Climate Change Deniers are Unpatriotic -- Nye, however, jacked his assessment of meteorology into the realm of partisanship, scoffing on MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show on Wednesday night that climate change deniers are "unpatriotic" in parroting simple minded, anti-science propaganda.

BREAKING HEADLINES

People whose properties are an easy target could be woken in the middle of the night by police who are promising to try windows and doors in a bid to cut break-ins. Code-named Operation Golden, householders in Cheshire who fall foul of their checks will be roused with a lecture from officers on what they could have lost.

The Financial Times newspaper reported on Thursday that Brown believes opinion has shifted decisively in favour of a globally coordinated tax after U.S. President Barack Obama's move last month to raise $90 billion from a U.S. bank levy.

Bluecrest and Winton, two of Europe's biggest hedge fund firms, have signed up to industry body the Hedge Fund Standards Board (HFSB), giving a boost to the sector's efforts to fend off tough regulation and meet investor demands.

A British intelligence service said it's discovered that gel and saline implants may be used by al-Qaida to make bombs, Houston TV station KPRC reported.

The world's oldest profession may have been subsidized by the US government during the war on terror.

Concerns over privacy have aligned with apocalyptic Biblical prophecy in a proposed Virginia law that limits the use of microchip implants on humans because of a lawmaker's concern that the chips will prove to be the Antichrist's "mark of the beast."

Goldman Sachs helped the Greek government to mask the true extent of its deficit with the help of a derivatives deal that legally circumvented the EU Maastricht deficit rules. At some point the so-called cross currency swaps will mature, and swell the country's already bloated deficit.

The Justice Department is poised this week to publicly defend a little-known law-enforcement practice that critics say may be the "sleeper" privacy issue of the 21st century: the collection of cell-phone "tracking" records that identify the physical locations where the phones have been.

One thing most Democrats and Republicans around the nation seem to agree on is that their government is too cozy with Wall Street -- and that that's not a good thing.

Appearing on MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show on Wednesday night, Nye scoffed that climate change deniers are "unpatriotic" in parroting simple minded, anti-science propaganda.
[We] remind you that global warming was the first term for this phenomenon that we now call can climate change," he said. "So it‘s very reasonable that a snowstorm in Washington that‘s this severe is a result of climate change."
Webmaster's Commentary:
Apparently, Nye just hasn't gotten the memo about "Climategate".
What East Anglia University did was to manipulate their numbers to generate a pre-determined outcome supporting anthropocentric global warming.
The actual numbers told a very different story.
There is a vast difference between junk science (manipulating data to fit a theory) and real science; Nye should be intelligent enough to understand the difference.

Forecasting with a Grain of Salt
Bloomberg News is out with its latest monthly survey of economists' forecasts and, according to those polled, the U.S. economy "will grow 3 percent this year and next, more than anticipated a month ago."

Well, maybe not. If you go back and look at how the experts have fared when forecasting the pace of growth for any given quarter, let alone for the year ahead, their tea leaf reading skills have left a lot to be desired.

Mumps outbreak spreads among people who got vaccinated against mumps
To hear the vaccine pushers say it, all the recent outbreaks of mumps and measles are caused by too few people seeking out vaccinations. It's all those "non-vaccinated people" who are a danger to society, they say, because they can spread disease.

Reality tells a different story, however: It is the vaccinated people who are causing these outbreaks and spreading disease!

Just this week, an outbreak of mumps among more than 1,000 people in New Jersey and New York has raised alarm among infectious disease authorities.

The outbreak itself is not unusual, though. What's unusual is that the health authorities slipped up and admitted that most of the people infected with mumps had already been vaccinated against mumps.

FLASHBACK - Obama: No family making less than $250,000 will see "any form of tax increase."

FLASHBACK 2000 - Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past
Sledges, snowmen, snowballs and the excitement of waking to find that the stuff has settled outside are all a rapidly diminishing part of Britain's culture, as warmer winters - which scientists are attributing to global climate change - produce not only fewer white Christmases, but fewer white Januaries and Februaries.

A Novel Idea. Register non-gun owners
Vermont State Rep. Fred Maslack has read the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, as well as Vermont 's own Constitution very carefully, and
his strict interpretation of these documents is popping some eyeballs in New England and elsewhere.
Maslack recently proposed a bill to register "non-gun-owners" and require them to pay a $500 fee to the state.
Thus Vermont would become the first state to require a permit for the luxury of going about unarmed and assess a fee of $500 for the privilege of not owning a gun.

TEXAN MEDINA QUESTIONS ANY US ROLE IN 9/11 ATTACKS
Medina, speaking on the Glenn Beck Show on Thursday, was asked if she believed the government was in any way involved with bringing down the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

There are No Conspiracies Because Daddy Will Always Protect Us
Indeed, long-term psychological studies show that approximately one-quarter of the American population has an "authoritarian personality", where they look for a "strong leader" to protect them (that's why even after his lies were exposed, Bush still stayed at approximately a 25% approval rating).
Authoritarians not only don't want to hear that the most powerful people might be acting against their interest, they will violently defend against any such information.

President Obama Calls for 'Restoring Balance to the Tax Code'
Webmaster's Commentary:
"We're going to tax everyone at the top rate from now on. That's fair!" -- Official White Horse Souse
This is just more election-year grandstanding. Obama will suggest a few cosmetic changes that might favor some of his major supporters and otherwise do nothing at all except to make it look like he is doing something.

The US economy could be transformed overnight with a 50% cut on all taxes across the board, and we could afford to do that if we as a nation would just quit our psychotic national need to murder brown people around the globe.

While confirming some of CP&R's criticisms, DOD also "contradict(ed) factual claims in its own investigation, raising new questions as to whether the DOD can be trusted to investigate its own conduct." The Center found:
-- DOD now says one detainee had a rag in his throat; the NCIS investigation showed all three had them;
-- DOD claims over 100 interviews were conducted during the first three days of investigation; in fact, 24 were conducted on June 10 and none the next three days; at most, investigators interviewed 45 individuals in total; in addition, NCIS investigators concluded that testimonies from all on-duty guards on the night of the incident were false, yet their statements are missing; further, most of them either refute or don't corroborate NCIS findings;

Totally Occupied: 700 Military Bases Spread Across Afghanistan
Nearly a decade after the Bush administration launched its invasion of Afghanistan, TomDispatch offers the first actual count of American, NATO, and other coalition bases there, as well as facilities used by the Afghan security forces. Such bases range from relatively small sites like Shinwar to mega-bases that resemble small American towns. Today, according to official sources, approximately 700 bases of every size dot the Afghan countryside, and more, like the one in Shinwar, are under construction or soon will be as part of a base-building boom that began last year.

The Great Highway Robbery Continues: How The FDIC Is Legally Transferring Billions In Taxpayer Money To Hedge Funds
It is not a secret to anyone who has been closely following the FDIC's quasi criminal bank takeover practices over the past year, that acquirors of failed banks end up receiving a massive and risk-free gift in the form of taxpayer benefits via the FDIC when it comes to funding losses on a given bank acquisition. Should there be a short sale resulting in a loss to the full principal (not the cost basis mind you)? Not to worry, Sheila Bair is there to hand out taxpayer money to the hedge funds/banks owning the newly transferred assets.

Internet Censorship Protest Shuts Down Australian Government Websites
In March 2009, the Wikileaks website published a leaked secret list of sites slated to be blocked by Australia’s state-sponsored parental filter.
The list revealed that blacklisted sites included “online poker sites, YouTube links, regular gay and straight porn sites, Wikipedia entries, euthanasia sites, websites of fringe religions such as satanic sites, fetish sites, Christian sites, the website of a tour operator and even a Queensland dentist.”

Ridicule of Conspiracy Theories Focuses On Diffusing Criticism of the Powerful
But - while people might admit that corporate executives and low-level government officials might have engaged in conspiracies - they may be strongly opposed to considering that the wealthiest or most powerful might possibly have done so.
Indeed, those who most loudly attempt to ridicule and discredit conspiracy theories tend to focus on defending against criticism involving the powerful.
This may be partly due to psychology: it is scary for people to admit that those who are supposed to be their "leaders" protecting them may in fact be human beings with complicated motives who may not always have their best interests in mind.

Climategate may well prove to be the final fight in the war between those who would rule us with lies and those who wish to live with truth. Climategate makes it clear that yes, there really are massive conspiracies between government and the media to mislead the general public. You cannot pretend they don't exist; one is right there before you staked out naked on the ground, exposed for all to marvel at! Blackwater accused over prostitute payments

guardian.co.uk, Thursday 11 February 2010 20.05 GMT

Private security firm accused of charging US government for payments to prostitut

The troubled American private security company Blackwater faced fresh controversy today when two former employees accused it of defrauding the US government for years, including billing for a Filipina prostitute on its payroll in Afghanistan.

According to Melan Davis, a former employee, Blackwater listed the woman for payment under the "morale welfare recreation" category.

The company, which allegedly employed her in Kabul, billed the government for her plane tickets and monthly salary, Davis said.

Blackwater, renamed Xe last year apparently because of the bad publicity attached to its original name, is among the biggest private security firms employed by the state department and Pentagon in Iraq and Afghanistan.

China Feared Big Conspiracy At Climate Talks

Chinese Foreign Ministry:

China urge the US side to fully understand the high sensitivity of Tibet-related issues, honor its commitment to recognizing Tibet as part of China and opposing 'Tibet independence.'

Deplorable for Obama to meet Dalai Lama

It is pathetic to see that US President Barack Obama is likely to succumb to domestic politics and go ahead with a plan to meet the Dalai Lama.

The fact that the meeting is still being planned, as confirmed by White House spokesman Bill Burton on Tuesday, bodes ill for Sino-US relations, already battered by the latest announcement of a $6.4 billion arms sale package to Taiwan.

Interfax-Ukraine Moscow, February 11 (Interfax) - Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said six-party talks on the North Korean nuclear issue must resumed as soon as possible, urging Russia to take up the same position with the United States on Iran.

Speaking at the Moscow State Institute of Foreign Relations (MGIMO) on Feb. 11, Albright said Washington's plans to deploy missiles in Romania stems from its concerns about the situation in Iran and about what the country is doing in connection with its uranium enrichment program.

Yellowstone Earthquake Swarm Summary as of 8 February 2010

As of February 8, 2010 9:00 AM MST there have been 1,771 earthquakes located. The swarm began January 17, 2010 around 1:00 PM MST about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of the Old Faithful area on the northwestern edge of the Yellowstone Caldera.

PARIS — Scientists Friday unveiled fresh evidence that gas drillers were to blame for unleashing a mud volcano in Indonesia's East Java that claimed 14 lives and displaced tens of thousands of people.

In a paper published by the journal Marine and Petroleum Geology, a group led by experts from Britain's Durham University said the new clues bolstered suspicions the catastrophe was caused by human error.

The company being fingered for the disaster, drilling firm Lapindo Brantas, replied in the same journal that the "Lusi" mud volcano was unleashed by an earthquake at Yogyakarta, 280 kilometres (174 miles) away.

Lusi's mud has been devouring land and homes in Sidoarjo district since May 2006, imperilling as many as 100,000 people through subsidence and inflicting damage at 4.9 billion dollars, according to an estimate by an Australian expert. READ MORE

Monster Rises From Japanese Seas

Erupting from an undersea volcano some 745 miles south of Tokyo, smoke and ash rise roughly 30 stories into the air in this image captured by a Japan Coast Guard helicopter on February 3, 2010.

The helicopter's mother ship, Yashima, was on a routine patrol when the Fukutoku-Okanoba volcano exploded. There had been no warning that an eruption was imminent, according to Keiji Doi, senior coordinator for seismic information at the Japan Meteorological Agency.

"Coast Guard vessels and aircraft are now collecting data in the area," Doi said, adding that other ships have been warned to keep their distance. "It is very dangerous to approach the area as it is impossible to predict further eruptions."
