COSMIC EVENT - Meteorite smashed into Mexico leaving 100' wide crater

A meteorite has smashed into the ground in Mexico, leaving a 30 meter (100 feet) wide crater, reports said.

The meteorite impact was in the Ahuazotepec Municipality in Central Mexico between the cities of Puebla and Hidalgo.

The precise impact area of the meteorite was in a relatively unpopulated area and hit around 6.30pm local time, Mexican media said.

The Ahuazotepec, Mexico meteorite impact was so massive it broke windows in homes many kilometers from the epicenter and people reported buildings swaying and mass confusion. Other reports said the Mexico meteorite impact partially damaged a road and a bridge.

The Mexican military was called in to lock down the area where the apparent space rock slammed into the ground.

Initial fears where that the impact was a aircraft crashing to the ground, but that report was later dismissed.

The Central Mexico meteorite event was witnessed by countless people in the region of the impact, with people as far away as Mexico City saying they saw the burning object enter the atmosphere.

White House Moves to Clear Up Comments on Bankers

New York Times (blog)
February 11, 2010, 7:07 am

It seems the White House was none too pleased with the fallout from an article in which President Obama appeared to take a more conciliatory stance toward the financial sector, telling Bloomberg BusinessWeek that he did not “begrudge people success or wealth,” as it was “part of the free-market system.”

The excerpts of the story published by Bloomberg News ran with the headline: “Obama doesn’t begrudge bonuses for Blankfein, Dimon.”

In the interview, the president compared Jamie Dimon, the chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, and Lloyd Blankfein, who heads up Goldman Sachs, with athletes who are paid even more.

”First of all, I know both those guys,” President Obama said. ”They’re very savvy businessmen. And I, like most of the American people, don’t begrudge people success or wealth. That’s part of the free market system.” ....

Bob Chapman's - The International Forecaster - Revising The Economic Problems Wont Make Them Go Away - Feb 10 2010

The threat of an inflationary depression around the world, metals will survive, currencies will not, Banks holding most of US deposits are broke, Paul Volcker would be a better chairman of the Fed, we need Glass-Steagall back, your deposits bailed out the bankers, nothing anyone can do for Greece, numbers and analysis from the Household Survey.

The inflationary depression still dominates and probably will continue to do so. In time the stimulus will fail to work and the world will slip into total insolvency and deflationary depression. The old M3 is about 3%, but we still have $23.7 trillion floating around. Not only is the US bankrupt, but also so is the rest of the world. It is now only a question of when the dominos will fall. It looks like the first wave in the collapse of the bear market rally is underway. Bonds will follow with higher interest rates and eventually commodities will be hit. Only gold and silver will survive, as the bankers and Wall Street complete their destruction of the world economy.

Holding currencies is also a loser. Eventually the best will fall to gold and silver. There is no possibility that quantitative easing can be curtailed and that means debt will continue to grow exponentially. By way of example in 2007 public debt as a percentage of GDP was 62% and this year it will be 94%; in England 44% to 82%; in the G-20 62% to 85%; in Europe an average of 63% to 85%, excepting Italy at 104% to 120%, and in Japan 188% to 227%. Over the next two years some of these nations are going to default, never mind Ireland, Greece, Portugal, Spain and Eastern Baltic Europe, which are well on the way to being basket cases. Due to current economic conditions these nations cannot generate revenue sufficient to even pay the service on the debt. Revenues are off 11% in the US and they are headed lower. In the President’s budget $100 billion is earmarked for incentives for job creation and $25 billion for the states that are generally incapable of even paying unemployment compensation. Forty states are on the edge of bankruptcy. The President wants to double the aid to education in a totally failed system. Governmental debt is growing at a rate of more than 20%. Then we can pencil in the bailout programs and the bankruptcy of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Ginnie Mae, FHA, READ MORE

Bailout watchdog: Billions in commercial real estate losses could threaten banks and economy

Over the next several years, failed commercial real estate loans could litter American cities with empty stores and office complexes, cause hundreds of bank failures and weaken the economy, a watchdog report says.

Banks face up to $300 billion in losses on loans made for commercial property and development, according to a report released Thursday by the Congressional Oversight Panel. The panel monitors the government's efforts to stabilize the financial system.

The report says the defaults could lead to reduced lending and cause the eviction of families from rental properties. Bank failures also could contribute to job losses and hurt the economic recovery.

Smaller banks are more vulnerable to the losses than their larger Wall Street counterparts. That's because commercial real estate makes up a larger portion of their portfolio.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., which manages bank failures and insures deposits, is under stress that will intensify over the next few years, panel chairwoman Elizabeth Warren said in a call with reporters. READ MORE

“More Empires Have Fallen Because Of Reckless Finances Than Invasion” - Washington Blog

While Eric Margolis' entire comment in the Toronto Sun is a must-read, the following two quotes really hit the nail on the head:

More empires have fallen because of reckless finances than invasion...

If Obama really were serious about restoring America’s economic health, he would demand military spending be slashed, quickly end the Iraq and Afghan wars and break up the nation’s giant Frankenbanks.

Margolis is right.

As I have repeatedly shown, war is bad for the economy. According to a Nobel prize-winning economist, the head of JP Morgan and others, the Iraq war and the war on terror in general were huge factors in destroying our economy.

America is a dying empire, destroying the last of its resources to fight unnecessary wars. Instead of rebuilding our economy so that we can once again be a strong nation, we are wasting trillions fighting those unnecessary wars, thus guaranteeing that we do not have the economic resources to defend ourselves in the future from real threats.

Don't believe me?

Well, our military and intelligence leaders say that the economic crisis is now the biggest threat to America's national security.

And as leading economic historian Niall Ferguson recently wrote in Newsweek:
Call the United States what you like—superpower, hegemon, or empire—but its ability to manage its finances is closely tied to its ability to remain the predominant global military power...

This is how empires decline. It begins with a debt explosion. It ends with an inexorable reduction in the resources available for the Army, Navy, and Air Force...

If the United States doesn't come up soon with a credible plan to restore the federal budget to balance over the next five to 10 years, the danger is very real that a debt crisis could lead to a major weakening of American power. READ MORE

Concept solution to rising seas: floating undersea skyscraper

Published 10 February, 2010, 11:54

A Canadian architectural firm has presented its solution to the apocalyptic scenario in which global warming causes a drastic rise in sea level. The Gyre project is a giant floating self-sustained habitat.

The central structure of the Gyre is a vortex of concentric rings ranging in size from 30,000 square meters to just 600 square meters. The upper floors house public places like restaurants, gardens and shops, while lower sections are used for offices and living quarters. The hollow inner part of the vortex is used for harvesting rain water and for solar energy generation.

Below the main part is a reverse spire going 400 meters deep. The underwater structure houses machinery, tidal generators, thrusters for propulsion, emergency freshwater storage basins and deep sea labs. This design gives overall stability to the Gyre and will allow it to withstand storms.

Protruding from the main part of the building are four arms with breakwater barriers on their ends. These elements form an inner harbor and port of approximately 1.25 km in diameter – enough to accommodate world’s largest maritime vessels.

The sci-fi looking "seascraper" is designed to accommodate 2,000 inhabitants.

Russian foreign minister arrives in Cuba to improve trade

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will arrive in Cuba on Thursday on a three-day visit which will focus on the development of bilateral economic ties.

The Russian foreign minister is scheduled to meet with the Cuban leadership and hold talks with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla.

Commenting on the upcoming visit, Foreign Ministry's spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said "the current trade, which totals $260 million, does not reflect the bilateral trade potential," and Moscow was hoping to diversify its economic and investment ties with Cuba.

Joint projects in electric power industry, transportation, pharmaceutics and high-tech industry are among the key areas in the future economic cooperation between the two countries, Nesterenko said.

Moscow earlier said that Russian-Cuban relations could serve as the starting point to advance Russia's interests in the entire Latin American region.

Lavrov will visit also visit Nicaragua and Guatemala on February 14-15 respectively and Mexico on February 15-16 as part of his Latin American tour.

Cuba sharply reduces US food imports amid hardship

Associated Press Writer

HAVANA -- Cuba has slashed food and agriculture imports from the United States - its largest food supplier despite decades of sour relations - as the communist government tightens its belt in the face of a crippling economic malaise.

Imports fell 26 percent in 2009 to $528 million, after peaking at $710 million the year before, according to a report Wednesday by the New York-based U.S.-Cuba Economic Trade Council, which provides nonpartisan commercial and economic information about the island and claims to have no position on policy.

"The decrease has nothing to do with U.S. regulations, U.S. law or U.S. policy," said John Kavulich, a senior policy analyst at the council. "It is a function of Cuba not having the resources."

"Venezuela has already provided tents, medical equipment, medicine and food, while the Haitian government has offered its full co-operation and support in this effort," Castro wrote in an article published in local newspapers.

Stretched military halts cleanup of Florida 'tire reef'

Associated Press Writer

Military divers are being pulled off a project to clean up an artificial reef off the coast of Florida that turned into an environmental disaster.

The divers have spent the last three summers pulling up thousands of tires a mile off the beach at Fort Lauderdale.

Hundreds of thousands were sunk there in 1972 in hopes they would turn into a coral reef. But nothing grew and they became scattered across the ocean floor, damaging real coral reefs.

The military began cleaning up the tires as a training exercise at no cost to the state.

But now a Pentagon official says the diving crews are being stretched too thin by two wars and helping repair port facilities damaged by the earthquake in Haiti.

The earliest the cleanup could continue is 2012.

US agency to review threats for 82 coral species

Associated Press Writer

U.S. officials said Wednesday they have begun a review to determine if dozens of coral species off Florida, Hawaii and island territories of the Caribbean and Pacific should be listed as "threatened" or "endangered."

Protection under the Endangered Species Act would allow more coral reef conservation, as activities ranging from fishing, dumping, dredging and offshore oil development would be subject to stricter regulatory scrutiny.

U.S. Army Releases Reuters Photographer Held for 17 Months without Charge

Ibrahim Jassam Mohammed (L), Reuters freelance TV cameraman and photographer, greets his friend after his release at his home in Mahmudiya, south of Baghdad February 10, 2010. The U.S. military freed Jassam in Iraq on Wednesday, almost a year and a half after snatching him from his home in the middle of the night and holding him without charge. REUTERS/Thaier al-Sudani

The United States military released Reuters photographer Ibrahim Jassam Mohammed on Wednesday after detaining him at Camp Cropper in Iraq for 17 months without charge.

“We welcome the decision to release Jassam,” said IPI Director David Dadge. “However, we remain concerned by the fact that the US military felt it acceptable to hold him for 17 months in the absence of any charges against him. Furthermore, this case reveals the disturbing vacuum that exists between US military law and sovereign Iraqi law and it makes a mockery of the principle of habeas corpus."

The Iraqi photojournalist, who worked for Reuters and other news agencies as a freelancer, was seized from his home in Mahmudiya in September 2008.

In November 2008, the Iraqi Central Criminal Court ruled that there was no case against Jassam, but the US military continued to hold him, asserting that he was a “security threat” because of his alleged “activities with insurgents.”

Jassam is one of a number of Iraqi journalists detained without charge, for varying lengths of time, by U.S. forces since the start of the Iraq war in 2003. On the anniversary of Jassam’s arrest last year, IPI noted that the military’s treatment of journalists was “a slap in the face to the US government’s stated belief in press freedom, as well as its long-cherished belief in due process.”

Obama doesn't hand China the moon

Critics of the decision by United States President Barack Obama to cancel the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) Constellation program, which was conceived five years ago to carry US astronauts back to the moon, portray the US as moving in the wrong direction and putting the nation at risk.

For example, John Tkacik, who is a retired Foreign Service officer and former chief of China analysis in the US State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research, recently wrote his assessment of Obama's decision in The Washington Times. [1]

"China's aerospace industry firms - which for decades have supplied dangerous missile technologies and equipment to Iran, North Korea and Pakistan, and which have been sanctioned ceaselessly by four successive US presidents for their transgressions - will find the [US] in a new suppliant posture," wrote Tkacik. "The atrophying US space program suggests that America will be forced to cooperate with China in space, or else cede the high frontier of space to China altogether."

Hillary's eligibility challenged in Supreme Court

Can political branch evade 'clear and precise language' of Constitution?

A brief filed with the U.S. Supreme Court by Judicial Watch, which investigates and prosecutes government corruption, questions whether members of the "political branches of the government" can "evade the clear and precise language of a provision of the Constitution through the use of a legislative 'fix.'"

The dispute is over former Sen. Hillary Clinton's eligibility to be secretary of state.

The U.S. Constitution, Article I, section 6, clause 2, provides: "No senator or representative shall, during the time for which he was elected, be appointed to any civil office under the authority of the United States, which shall have been created, or the emoluments whereof shall have been [increased] during such time."

The case brought on behalf of a career government employee outlines how during Clinton's tenure in the U.S. Senate, the salary for the secretary of state was raised to $186,600, then to $191,300, and then again to $196,700.

Hillary Clinton to to attend the Brookings Institute US-Islamic World Forum on Sunday in Qatar

(AFP) WASHINGTON — US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton heads to Qatar and Saudi Arabia this weekend amid efforts to boost ties with Muslim nations, revive Arab-Israeli peace talks and tackle security concerns.

During the February 13-16 trip, Clinton is scheduled to attend the US-Islamic World Forum on Sunday in Qatar and meet the tiny Gulf state's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said.

The chief US diplomat will also meet Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al-Thani, who plays a dual role as Qatar's prime minister and foreign minister, Crowley added in a statement on Tuesday.

At the US-Islamic forum in Doha two years ago, delegates voiced support for then-presidential candidate Barack Obama, although some warned against expecting any radical policy change should he win the White House.

A year into his administration, Obama has yet to achieve any significant momentum on stalled peace talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis, and Muslim audiences are now less receptive to his promise of a "new beginning" with the Muslim world.

During her visit to Saudi Arabia on Monday and Tuesday, Clinton's agenda includes talks with King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud and Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal.

Crowley provided no details of the talks in both Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

The visit to Qatar would complement the Obama administration's efforts to improve ties with the Muslim world.

In his inauguration speech last year, Obama vowed to seek a "new way forward" with the Muslim world "based on mutual interest and mutual respect," after eight rocky years under his predecessor George W. Bush.

Both sunspots pose a threat for isolated M-class solar flares. According to NOAA, the total probability of such an eruption in the next 24 hours is 30%. The chief effect of M-flares on Earth is to ionize our planet's upper atmosphere. This can alter the normal propagation of radio signals, boosting some frequencies while suppressing others. Radio listeners should be alert for blackouts and sudden ionospheric disturbances (SIDs).

VOLCANISM NEWS

Yellowstone Update -- The recent earthquake swarms at Yellowstone's "Super Volcano" are the longest spate of these swarms to hit Yellowstone in recent memory. The USGS is downplaying these earthquake swarms as "normal," and it's possible they are. The truth is that our knowledge of Super Volcanoes is extremely limited; there has not been an eruption of a Super Volcano in recorded history, and as dangerous as this phenomena is (Super Volcanoes), there is no established scientific record that scientists can use to properly evaluate whether or not an eruption is eminent.
