Black Friday Shoppers Crowd Best Buy, Target in Pursuit of `Elusive Game'

Nov. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Shoppers gathered at Best Buy Co., Target Corp. and Toys “R” Us Inc. stores from New Jersey to Texas well before midnight yesterday to take advantage of Black Friday deals on televisions, laptops and robot hamsters.

“I do this because of my family,” Eihab Elzubier, a truck driver, said as he stood at the head of the line outside a Best Buy in Greensboro, North Carolina. He arrived at 9 a.m. Thursday and kept his place in the queue with the help of his wife, mother and sister.

Elzubier, 41, figured the 20-hour wait will save him as much as $1,000. He plans to buy a 42-inch Samsung flat-panel TV for $547.99, a Sony laptop computer for $399.99, a Compaq laptop for $179.99, software and accessories.

The day after U.S. Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday, the traditional beginning of holiday buying. Explanations of the phrase’s origins differ, one holding that it’s the weekend when retailers go to being in the black, profitable for the year. Stores open early on Black Friday and offer so-called doorbuster discounts to attract business. This year, shoppers say they plan to spend less on gifts than they did last year. Full article

Mystery of "X" at the Center of Spiral Galaxies

One such stellar sight is the "bulge" around the center of galaxies. Spiral galaxies seem to feature an odd X-wing shape around their center, odd dust tracks at and angle to the galactic plane, and before we can explain them we have to be able to see them: specifically, we need a galaxy that happens to be edge-on from where we are to afford us an end view. Like NGC 4710, recently imaged by the Hubble telescope.

The wonderfully clear shots from the satellite have spurred renewed debate along the lines of "What the hell is happening here?" (Note: that's far cooler when asked by astronomers, as opposed to office managers or others-of-a-significant-nature.) The data depicts a significantly bulged galaxy with very few orbiting globular clusters - like "moons" orbiting around a galaxy, only made of a dense cluster of stars.

This indicates that the bulges, whatever they are, accrue slowly over a galactic evolution instead of suddenly spewing out as the galaxy forms.

Galaxy: NGC 4710

China readies second Moon mission

TG Daily

Friday, 27 November 2009 04:33

The Peoples' Republic of China said on Friday that it will launch a second lunar probe in October next year and could send a manned mission as early as 2017.

The second lunar probe, dubbed Chang'e 2, builds on the experience the Chinese built when they lobbed Chang'e 1 onto the surface of the Moon in March.

Official newspaper the China Daily said that Chang'e 2 will have a higher resolution camera and will orbit closer to the surface. China is also planning a third mission in 2015 that will land on the Moon, collect samples of rock and return them to Earth.

And China may have a manned mission landing on the Moon as early as 2017. China also plans a Mars mission in the future.

The country also has ambitious plans to launch a space station and to conduct scientific deep space experiments.

China is engaged in a space race with other Asian countries including India and South Korea, but maintains that its space program is for peaceful and not for military purposes.

Hundreds evacuated as Pacific volcano erupts on Vanuatu

More than 300 villagers were evacuated in the Pacific nation of Vanuatu after an erupting volcano started spewing smoke and ash on to their homes.

Published: 12:39PM GMT 26 Nov 2009

Residents were loaded onto fishing boats and shipped to the far side of Gaua island after the volcano, which has been rumbling for the past two months, started erupting.

"They'
re evacuating people to the other side of the island. The volcano was throwing ash in the place they live," said a Red Cross spokesman. He said police and Vanuatu's National Disaster Management Office were overseeing the operation.

The Red Cross is providing water containers and purification tablets for the villagers, who have been hit by respiratory problems and diarrhoea caused by the volcano's pungent sulphur fumes.

The evacuees will have to stay away from their villages until the volcano subsides, the official said.

The area has been put on the second highest alert level, reports said.
Gaua, about 9,800 feet high, has erupted 13 times since 1963, tourism officials say. Vanuatu is on the "Pacific Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

Devastating Flood Kills 83 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia - Gateway for Muslim pilgrams headed to Mecca

Officials said none of the dead were pilgrims for the hajj

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia - November 27, 2009 — More bodies have been recovered in the western Saudi city of Jeddah, gateway for Muslim pilgrims headed to Mecca, pushing the death toll from Wednesday's flash flood to 83, reports said on Friday.

The Al-Watan and Okaz newspapers said the toll had risen to 83, nearly all of them in Jeddah, after the Red Sea port was hit by a torrential downpour that sparked what observers said looked like a tidal wave when it struck the city.

Al-Hayat said 84 had died.

Officials said none of the dead were pilgrims for the hajj, which was underway in Mecca 80 kilometres (50 miles) away.

Receding waters yesterday revealed crumbled bridges and torn up roads, with crumpled vehicles piled up in areas like driftwood.

Citizens worried that a huge sewage reservoir outside the city would burst its banks. Jeddah municipality spokesman Ahmad al-Ghamdi said that the reservoir was safe and not in danger of being overwhelmed by floodwaters, the reports said.

Implications of rigging the data are still being felt.

The collapse of an economy that was built on sand - The spectre of default in Dubai has serious implications for us all

Friday, 27 November 2009

In the years of the boom, Dubai set about building with an ambition that would have made even Ozymandias blush. Artificial islands full of luxury villas, the world's tallest tower, an underwater hotel, even a stone-by-stone recreation of the French city of Lyon – no project was too extravagant, some would say vulgar, for the construction magnates of the emirate.

But this was a project built on the shifting sands of credit. Foreign capital poured into Dubai as its ruler, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, set about turning his nation into the financial, tourist and sporting hub of the Gulf. In less than a decade, Dubai managed to accumulate foreign liabilities of $80bn. Some estimates put it still higher. Full Article

Cambodia's Khmer Rouge torturer Duch – killer of 12,380 – asks court to set him free

Cambodia's Khmer Rouge prison boss Kaing Guek Eav tells war crimes trial that his 10 years already served is enough

The Khmer Rouge prison boss who admitted responsibility for the torture and murder of more than 12,000 people today stunned a war crimes court by asking to be acquitted and released.

On the last day of a nine-month trial, Kaing Guek Eav, known as Comrade Duch, asked the judges to consider his co-operation with the court and the 10 years he had already served in jail and set him free.

In the last sentence of his final summing up, he said: "I would ask the chamber to release me, thank you very much."

The extraordinary request came just two days after he told the court he was ultimately accountable for the deaths that occurred while he headed the Khmer Rouge's Tuol Sleng prison in Phnom Penh. "I am solely and individually responsible for the loss of at least 12,380 lives," he said.

This morning an astounded bench asked Duch's lawyer, Kar Savuth, to clarify his statement, asking if his plea to be released was a request for acquittal.

"Release means acquittal," the court was told.

Duch's request enraged Bou Meng, one of only a dozen prisoners to walk out of Tuol Sleng alive. He stormed from the public gallery, describing Duch's plea as an insult to his wife's memory.

"I could not accept the request for the release by Duch, because many people, including my wife, have been killed during the Khmer Rouge time. He cannot step on the victims like this." Full Article

The China Post | National Taiwan University (NTU) develops a microchip to be inserted as pain reliever

Thursday, November 26, 2009 9:28 am TWN, The China Post

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A research team headed by National Taiwan University (NTU) has created a microchip that can be inserted into your body and alleviate pain through the swipe of a cell phone-sized device.

At only NT$10 a piece, the microchip is said to possess healing properties that provide chronic pain relief for up to three months per "swipe." The chip will help those who suffer from bone spurs, trigeminal nerve injuries, painful amputation stumps and sports injuries.

The landmark device will reportedly be ready for public use in two years time.

The innovative project was a collaborative effort by the NTU Graduate Institute of Electronics Engineering and Institute of Biomedical Engineering, National Taipei University of Technology as well as scholars and doctors from the Chungshing Hospital and Shin Kong Wu Ho-su Memorial Hospital. The nanomaterials used in the microchip technology were provided by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited. Full Article

Examiner.com | Large triangle UFO spotted by commercial airline pilot in Memphis, Tennessee

November 27, 1:12 AM Memphis UFO Examiner

On 11/24/09 at 9:45 pm, a commercial airline pilot in the Cordova area was looking to the north at departing air-traffic from the Memphis airport, when he saw what he described as a diamond-shaped craft pass directly under a CRJ-200 [Canadair Regional Jetliner ] . This pilot who has asked to remain anonymous said the jet was flying at about 8000 feet and the Unknown flew under it at an approximate altitude of 6000 feet [a close call in terms of air-traffic safety regulations]. The pilot said the UFO was on a flight path from east to west and traveling at somewhere between Mach 1 and Mach 1.5. He said that it was banking slightly to the north-west as it flew under the jet, so he got a view of its underside. He described it as a perfect triangle with dim white lights at its corners and about 200 ft across, easily as large as a 747. Though it was somewhat hazy in appearance, he said he saw it distinctly enough to make out that it was a solid body with the lights attached. It had no stobe lights and was totally silent. He observed it for about 20 seconds until it passed out of sight .

This man has been flying all his life and is very knowledgable about airplanes. He said he has never personally witnessed any aircraft this strange before. He commented in the interview the next day with the MUFON Tennessee State Director that he was very confident that it was nothing of ours, military or otherwise. In his report to the MUFON CMS files, he concluded by stating that this sighting left him feeling numb. When interviewed, he admitted that he was still shaken by what he had witnessed.
