Tuesday Morning News Update | November 24, 2009

Good Morning! Interesting headline off of the Drudge Report right now: Economy's rebound not as strong as first thought.. wonder how much $$ someone got paid to figure that out?

All is well with me - no complaints - but as I frequently chuckle and say: "I'd complain but who would listen?".

NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga — A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the Pacific island nation of Tonga, sending panicked residents into the streets at night, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported shortly after the quake struck at 3:32 a.m. (1332 GMT, 8:32 a.m. EST) that there was no threat of a destructive widespread tsunami, although waves were possible within 100 kilometers (60 miles) of the epicenter.

"There's no indication of damage right now in this area," said Faleo Vico, the duty Weather Office staffer in the capital, Nuku'alofa, 120 miles (195 kilometers) southwest of the epicenter.

Residents in the capital said their homes rattled, and the tremors set off frantic barking of dogs.

In the town of Ha'apai, on an island 185 miles (300 kilometers) northeast of the capital, resident Lano Fonua said the quake was strong and lasted about 45 seconds.

"Many people went out into the streets as the quake was shaking the area quite a bit. It was really going," he said. "We don't have any reports of major damage here in the center of town."

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was 6.8-magnitude and was generated from a depth of 38 miles (62 kilometers) in the ocean.

On Sept. 29, a tsunami spawned by a magnitude-8.3 earthquake killed 34 people in American Samoa, 183 in Samoa and nine in Tonga.

USGS Webcam Catches Minor Eruption of Kilauea Volcano at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

November 24, 2009 - This USGS Quicktime movie shows a small explosive event at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the Halema`uma`u vent at 9:20 a.m Saturday. The explosion was immediately preceded by a portion of the vent rim collapsing into the vent cavity.

The brown plume rises rapidly from the vent, and in the full resolution video large particles can be seen ejected in front of the plume. In the video shown here, it is possible to see some of these particles impact the crater wall—look for several small white puffs to appear on the crater wall just ahead of the rising brown plume (about 7-9 seconds into the video clip). No ejecta was found at the Halema`uma`u Overlook, indicating that few, if any particles, reached the crater rim. http://www.nationalparkstraveler.com/podcast/2009/usgs-webcam-catches-minor-eruption-kilauea-volcano-hawaii-volcanoes-national-park4985

INCOMING FROM ABOVE

BRUSH, Colo. -A basketball-sized chunk of ice crashed through the roof of a family's Colorado home after apparently falling from an airplane passing overhead. Danelle Hagan and her 9-year-old daughter were at home in Brush on Saturday when they heard the kitchen ceiling come crashing down. They were not injured.

"I hear a huge, what sounded like an explosion. And I look over and my kitchen is basically in shambles," Hagan told KMGH-TV in Denver. "It was very terrifying."

The Federal Aviation Administration was sending investigators to the home to investigate whether the ice came from an airplane. The Hagans put some of the ice in their freezer.

FAA spokesman Mike Fergus said Wednesday the ice chunk appears to be "Rime ice," which can build up on the outside of a plane's fuselage when it flies through cold and wet air.

Fergus says that it doesn't appear the ice was "blue ice," which comes from an airplane's toilet.

After investigators determine whether the ice came from a plane, Fergus said they'll look at which planes are in the area at the time to see if it's possible to tell which craft dropped the ice.

Fergus said that in cases of falling blue ice, FAA investigators would inspect any plane that was in the area to make sure it doesn't have a dangerous pressure leak. He said that ice falls from airplanes are alarming, but extremely rare.

He said the chances of getting hit by ice from a plane is "on the magnitude of a lightning strike."

Hagan's family is staying out of the house until it's repaired because the crash loosened some asbestos. She says people were in the kitchen just before the ice fell, so they're just glad to be OK.

"If we had been in that kitchen, it would have been devastating," Hagan said.

North Side mystery: Where did falling ice come from?

'The whole house shook and it felt like 'Boom!'' says homeowner

A large piece of ice fell from the sky Wednesday evening, tearing roofing from a North Side home before shattering into dozens of cloudy ice cubes and ice balls.

The roof of the Dowd family home, on the 4200 block of North Wolcott, sustained noticeable damage after ice apparently fell from a plane. (Jean Lachat/Sun-Times)

"The whole house shook and it felt like 'Boom!'" said homeowner Linda Dowd, who was watching "Freaky Friday" with her 11-year-old son Sean when the chunk struck. "We thought at first my son's drum set fell down or maybe the chimney, but it wasn't windy."

What she saw outside, the shattered pieces of ice in her gangway and front yard on the 4200 block of North Wolcott Avenue, didn't really answer any questions.

"We figured the ice fell from the sky," she said.

Dowd's husband Paul called Chicago police, bringing out four squad cars and a visit from a Belmont District sergeant, Linda Dowd said.

Linda Dowd said she was frosted over the $500 deductible her family would be paying on their homeowner insurance. Beyond the exterior damage, she said there is plaster damage in their bedroom next to where the ice struck the roof.

"It's like, why me?" she said. "It's falling out of the sky."

Tony Molinaro, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman, said investigators would track down any planes flying over the home around 8 p.m. last night to see if they sprung a leak. The home, he said, was about 10 miles from an O'Hare runaway.

"Ice is possible but it's an odd time of year for it," he said.

Neighbor Don Wilke walked over to survey the damage Thursday morning.

"It's a one in a million chance it would hit a house like this," he said.

Nine UFO Mystery Lights Pass Over Witnesses In New Zealand

No-one used the word UFO but the lights seen in the sky over Upper Moutere, near Nelson, last night are definitely unidentified.

Several people reported seeing balls of fire in the sky about 9.30pm, with Matiu Noakes saying he saw nine, moving from the direction of Kina toward Upper Moutere. "They looked like skydivers coming down with flares attached to them."

He said they faded out over Upper Moutere and were going too fast to be flares.

Lisa Chambers, marketing manager for Skydive Abel Tasman and a keen member of Nelson's skydiving community, said "there is absolutely no way it could have been skydivers". She said night drops were too dangerous in that area and had there been a prank afoot, she would have known.

Mike Reed, a helicopter pilot, said he was driving toward Motueka along the Moutere Highway when he saw the lights. He saw several other cars parked at the turnoff to Neudorf Rd, and spoke to others there who had been watching the lights.

He said he expected to hear aircraft noise when he turned off his engine but it was completely silent. Even so, he double-checked with air traffic control at Nelson Airport, which knew of no aircraft in the sky nearby at the time.

He said the lights were below the clouds, which he estimated to be about 300 to 500 metres up, and one of them appeared to float up into the clouds.

"If I was going to take a guess on it, I would say somebody's got a bunch of helium balloons and they've tied something on to it." But he had discounted every theory he had come up with so far.

Astronomer Robert Rea, of the Nelson Science Society, said he doubted anything astronomical would have pierced last night's cloud cover. Motueka police said they received no calls.

Interview: Zhang Yifang (a Professor of Physics) on UFOs and aliens in China

The 2009 International Astronomy Year and Extraterrestrial Life Forum was held from October 31 through November 16 at Dongfeng Plaza. GoKunming spoke on the sidelines of the forum with forum organizer Zhang Yifang (张一方), founder and former director of the Kunming UFO Research Association. We also spoke with Zhang's wife and son.

In addition to trying to bring attention to UFO sightings in China and around the world, Zhang, 62, is also a professor of physics at Yunnan University. He told Beijing-based Global Times that he thinks aliens are presently living in Yunnan, Heilongjiang and Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.

"I believe they are nice and they have no intention of attacking us," he told Global Times.

"Perhaps they are shape-shifters camouflaged as human beings or they have manufactured human-like robots to watch us," he added.

Kunming has had more than 400 UFO sightings since 1972, according to Zhang.

TENT CITY NEWS

Fear sets up camp on a stretch of the L.A. River

Along the Los Angeles River are invisible cities whose population centers do not figure on official maps.

Jolene Musgrove, 51, cooks breakfast among tossed garbage under the 7th Street Bridge next to the Los Angeles River in Long Beach. She has lived off and on at the river for about 30 years, and for the last few months between two bridge pillars under the 7th Street Bridge. Audio slide show (Francine Orr / Los Angeles Times)

The river's littered banks have become a no-man's land for the homeless--the hard-core junkies, the mentally ill and those just trying to disappear. A dozen or so people live in tents and lean-tos under the 7th Street bridge in Long Beach, just one of the many invisible villages along the river.

Kitchen table

A typical kitchen space is located outdoors, since homes in the neighborhood generally lack indoor running water, electrical power, or ventilation for fire-based stoves. The weathered kitchen table at Jeremiah's home is more than half disintegrated from age. But the parts of the tabletop that remain are still put to use.
