http://www.esa.int/esaCP/index.htmlSOHO, the Solar & Heliospheric Observatory, is a project of international collaboration between the European Space Agency ESA and NASA to study the Sun from its deep core to the outer corona and the solar wind.
SOHO was launched on December 2, 1995. The SOHO spacecraft was built in Europe by an industry team led by prime contractor Matra Marconi Space (now EADS Astrium) under overall management by ESA. The twelve instruments on board SOHO were provided by European and American scientists. Nine of the international instrument consortia are led by European Principal Investigators (PI's), three by PI's from the US. Large engineering teams and more than 200 co-investigators from many institutions supported the PI's in the development of the instruments and in the preparation of their operations and data analysis. NASA was responsible for the launch and is now responsible for mission operations. Large radio dishes around the world which form NASA's Deep Space Network are used for data downlink and commanding. Mission control is based at Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

A circulating, bubbling, and spattering lava pond surface has again become visible within the Halemaumau crater vent at the summit of the Big Island's Kilauea volcano.
A small overnight collapse enlarged a hole deep in the vent on November 19th, when this video was taken by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The lava surface was seen rising and falling multiple times before dawn.
The HVO says the lava in this video is 200 yards below the vent rim. The vigorous lava surface is about 20 yards wide. Spatter deposited on the walls around the lava surface creates a hot, unstable surface, which can be seen to disintegrate as large blocks break off and fall into the lava, says HVO.

MORE FROM MY SCIENCE FORUM:What could spur a descent into cold would be significant volcanism, which as you have pointed out repeatedly, coincided with the Dalton Minimum. NASA has done studies (including one co-authored by Schmidt, I believe, into volcanism during the Maunder Minimum). I make this point in part because if AGW catastrophists dare to step away from warming predictions in the wake of new volcanism, saying, in effect, "Yeah, but ..." I am liable to laugh my very heartiest laugh. There is every chance, in other words, that solar activity is a significant driver not only of cloud cover but of explosive volcanic eruptions. I'm not saying, by the way, that cooling can't and won't take place in the absence of such volcanism, just that it would likely yank the ocean-atmosphere chain down faster than it would progress without such eruptions.
What I see, looking at the ocean-atmosphere system, is a tug-of-war at present (being played out, on a secondary level, in discussions such as the present one). You have significant accumulated heat in the ocean putting a lot of water vapor in the atmosphere, and you have some pretty decent puddles of cold air that then wring out the water in the form of rain and snow (!). Same old, same old, on some level, but also, perhaps, tell-tale signs of a regime change: extraordinary snow in North Dakota last winter, record early and late (and total snowfall) at many locations in Oz and New Zealand during the last two winters, significant early-season snowfall in the U.S. this winter, very snowy winter in the Alps last year, massive snowfall in China two winters ago and again just now, snowfall in Baghdad, October snowfall in London in 2008 for the first time since 1922, so much snow in Oslo last winter that they had to push it into the port, record snowfall in Brazil, etc.

Officially the Agreement on Provisional Arrangements in Afghanistan Pending the Re-Establishment of Permanent Government Institutions, the Bonn Agreement was the initial series of agreements intended to re-create the State of Afghanistan following the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Since no nationally-agreed-upon government had existed in Afghanistan since 1979, it was felt necessary to have a transition period before a permanent government was established. A nationally-agreed-upon government would require at least one loya jirga to be convened; however, in the absence of law and order in the wake of the rapid victory of American and Afghan Northern Alliance forces, immediate steps were felt to be required.

Established in 1958, the NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency (NAMSA) is NATO’s principal logistics support management agency. NAMSA’s main task is to assist NATO nations by organizing common procurement and supply of spare parts and arranging maintenance and repair services necessary for the support of various weapon systems in their inventories. This assistance is available whenever two or more nations operate the same system and have made a conscious decision to use NAMSA’s support facilities.
NAMSA’s activities are overseen by the NATO Maintenance and Supply Organization (NAMSO), formed by 27 NATO nations with the purpose of achieving maximum effectiveness in logistics support at minimum cost to those nations, both individually and collectively. Through a Board of Directors, NAMSO provides guidance to NAMSA on policy and oversees the implementation of that policy.

Most of these logistics services are outsourced to industry and the Agency’s main role is in consolidating nations’ requirements, centralizing logistics management activities, conducting international competitive bidding processes and controlling the cost and quality of the services rendered to customers.
Many NATO nations see advantages in a collaborative approach with other members of the Alliance – particularly where this proves to be more cost–effective than supporting their equipment individually. NAMSA’s aim is to ensure that customers receive the very best logistics support available to guarantee the operational readiness of their various weapon and equipment systems.
NAMSA also provides support for the NATO Codification System (NCS) and in the developing area of on-line, Internet based, cooperative logistics for the management, exchange, sharing and procurement of materiel. In recent years, the Agency has become increasingly involved in providing logistical support for NATO operations and for deployed Armed Forces of NAMSO member states. NAMSA has also taken the lead in several demilitarization projects for the destruction of anti-personnel landmines, conventional munitions and light weapons. A number of agreements have been reached for NAMSA to support non-NATO nations under the Partnership for Peace (PfP) initiative.
The award was presented by Raytheon to NAMSA during an ITAS Suppliers’ Conference held on 14-15 October at McKinney, Texas, US. Delivery on schedule and within cost were the preponderant arguments justifying the award.
The LM Workshop is part of NAMSA’s Rockets, Missiles, UAS and Combat Vehicles Programme Office (LM) that has the capability of performing supply, maintenance, repair, and design and modification activities on selected equipment. It has some 60 technicians and specialists, ranging from optical engineers and electronic experts to paint sprayers and warehousemen. They are primarily involved in the maintenance of the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), the TOW anti-tank weapon system and, more recently, Global Positioning System (GPS) user equipment.

United States strongly urged by Pakistan Prime Minister that Obama's new policy on Afghanistan must not disturb balance of power in South Asia
KABUL, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan has urged the United States that the new policy of Obama administration on Afghanistan must not disturb balance (of power) in South Asia.
The strongest ever signal from Pakistan was made by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in his talks with the CIA Director General, Leon Panetta, who paid a three-day visit to Islamabad on the week-end.

Gilani said increase in number of ISAF (International Security Assistance Forces) forces in Afghanistan can leave negative impact on Pakistan's Baluchistan province.
In past, Islamabad has though expressed its reservations about infiltration of insurgents and shipments of arms from Afghanistan for insurgents operating in its tribal areas and Baluchistan. However, it is for the first time that it has criticized possible "disturbance of regional power" due to military build-up in Afghanistan.
Pakistan has always complained against India's military build-up alleging that it disturbed balance of power in the region.
However, it has never made such complaint about its western neighbor, which has remained shattered by the Soviet invasion and incessant civil wars.
The United States has already deployed 68,000 troops in Afghanistan, besides the 40,000 NATO-led ISAF forces there. U.S. NATO commander in the country, General Stanley McChrystal has called for deployment of up to 40,000 more international forces.
U.S. President Barrack Obama is in the final phase of deciding his future strategy in Afghanistan, which will most probably include sending of additional U.S. troops to the country.
Britain, Germany, and Slovakia have already announced sending of more troops to Afghanistan while NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has indicated surge in alliance troops in the country.
Pakistan shares 2,430-kilometer long rugged border with Afghanistan mostly covered with high-raised mountains, gorges, and valleys, and inhabited on both sides by semi-independent Pashtoon tribes, not bound by Pakistani laws.
In the past, Pakistan and Afghanistan have accused each other of border violations and seepage of militants and arms into either side.
Amir Haider Khan Hoti, the Chief Minister of Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province (NWFP), bordering Afghanistan, alleged on Friday that the militants operating in north-western Pakistan received "planning and funds" from abroad.
He was answering journalists' queries in Peshawar about presence of Pakistani Taliban leader, Maulana Fazlullah in Afghanistan.
In an interaction with BBC, Fazlullah had claimed earlier this week that he had crossed over to Afghanistan.
Hoti said if it was true "then it is the biggest proof of what we have been speaking of external hand in (terrorist activities) in Pakistan."
He called for effectively raising voice at diplomatic level against any country involved in terrorist activities in Pakistan.
Pakistani military officials recently alleged that the insurgents in the Pakistani tribal areas were being armed and financed from across the Afghan border.
Islamabad also alleges that the insurgents in its south-western Baluchistan province are also receiving arms and training in Afghanistan, a claim rejected by Kabul as baseless.
Gilani had, during visit of U.S. National Security Advisor, James Jones to Islamabad earlier this month, also conveyed Pakistan's concern over increase in number of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, "particularly in Helmand province."
Helmand is adjoining Pakistan's Baluchistan province, where Pakistani officials have in the past alleged presence of training camps for Baloch separatist and from where Baloch insurgents have allegedly been receiving arms supplies and financial support.
In his talks with Panetta, the Pakistani Prime Minister emphatically said that the new U.S. policy on Afghanistan should incorporate Pakistan's viewpoint.
He said the United States must fully share and inform Pakistan on its roadmap about Afghanistan so to remove mistrust and build mutual confidence.
U.S. officials, including James Jones and Leon Panetta, have promised to take Pakistan on board while devising new strategy for Afghanistan.
As to how much Washington takes care of Pakistan's concerns in this regard will be seen once President Obama unfolds his new strategy.
