National Situation Update: Tuesday, December 8, 2009
Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED).
Significant National Weather
A major winter storm will move across the Midwest today. The storm center will make it to the Great Lakes by Wednesday. For the latest information on the weather expected with this storm visit the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center at www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/wwd/winter_wx.shtml.
West:
Snow is falling across higher elevations of the Southwest. Expect blizzard conditions with heavy snow and winds of 20 to 40 mph with gusts over 60 mph. Total snow amounts of two to four feet are expected with blowing and drifting snow due to the strong winds. Locally heavy rain showers are possible during the morning in southern Arizona and the lower elevations of New Mexico. Skies will clear and precipitation will end this afternoon as the low pressure system moves east. However, gusty winds will continue into the evening.
Midwest:
The low will produce moderate to heavy snow from the Plains into the Upper Mississippi Valley. With sustained winds of 15 to 30 mph and gusts over 40 mph, blizzard conditions are likely. Supplied by moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, the storm will produce a wintry mix over the central Mississippi and Ohio valleys. Tomorrow, the western part of the region begins to clear out but snow will continue to fall around the Great Lakes and the northern and central Mississippi Valley. Snowfall amounts of a foot or more are possible by the time the storm ends.
South:
Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will be pulled northward over eastern Texas, the southern Plains and the lower Mississippi Valley. Tonight the storm will spread heavy rain across the rest of the Southeast all the way to the Atlantic Coast. During the afternoon and early evening, severe thunderstorms (gusty winds large hail and even tornadoes) are possible over the central Gulf Coast and the Carolinas.
Tomorrow the precipitation will have moved eastward into the Carolinas, Georgia and northern Florida with showers and a few thunderstorms. Rainfall totals are expected to be between one to four inches.
Northeast:
The region will start the day under high pressure but the approaching low pressure system will bring a wintry mix of rain, sleet and freezing rain to West Virginia, Virginia and southwest Pennsylvania by this afternoon. The mixed precipitation should turn to freezing rain by midnight and rain by Wednesday morning. The band of precipitation will continue to move northward reaching northern New York and central New England by tomorrow morning where it will gradually turn into a rain event. The Mid-Atlantic will receive the most precipitation with more than an inch. ( NOAA’s National Weather Service, Various Media Sources)
High surf warning for Hawaii
A very large northwest swell generated over the North Pacific Ocean a few days ago will continue to bring dangerous and possibly damaging surf to exposed shores facing north, west and east through Wednesday. High surf warning is in effect for shores facing north and west on Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and facing west and northeast on the Big Island. Surf of 30 to 40 feet will continue along north facing shore with some sets of 50 feet on the outer reefs tonight through Wednesday. Surf along west facing shores will be to 30 feet. The high surf, combined with a two foot high tide Tuesday morning, will increase the chance of waves washing onto roads and property along the immediate coast.
This event is being compared to a historical large surf event which took place Dec. 1-4, 1969. People going near the beach in affected areas are being advised to stay away from the water due to dangerous swimming conditions and deadly rip currents. (National Weather Service Honolulu HI)
Hazard Assessment (10 Dec -21 Dec 2009)
Dec 10: Heavy, lake-effect snow downwind of the Great Lakes
Dec 10-11: Much below normal temperatures spreading south and east across the central and eastern CONUS
Dec 10-13: Much below normal temperatures for eastern Montana and the northern Plains
Dec 12-16: Periods of heavy precipitation for northern and central California
Dec 13-14: Much below normal temperatures for eastern Alaska
Severe drought in parts of Wisconsin, Texas, and areas in the western U.S. Some relief is expected across the western U.S.(NWS, Climate Prediction Center)

VOLCANISM NEWS
http://www.fema.gov/hazard/volcano/index.shtm
Volcano
A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a reservoir of molten rock below the surface of the earth. Unlike most mountains, which are pushed up from below, volcanoes are built up by an accumulation of their own eruptive products. When pressure from gases within the molten rock becomes too great, an eruption occurs. Eruptions can be quiet or explosive. There may be lava flows, flattened landscapes, poisonous gases, and flying rock and ash.
Because of their intense heat, lava flows are great fire hazards. Lava flows destroy everything in their path, but most move slowly enough that people can move out of the way.
Fresh volcanic ash, made of pulverized rock, can be abrasive, acidic, gritty, gassy, and odorous. While not immediately dangerous to most adults, the acidic gas and ash can cause lung damage to small infants, to older adults, and to those suffering from severe respiratory illnesses. Volcanic ash also can damage machinery, including engines and electrical equipment. Ash accumulations mixed with water become heavy and can collapse roofs. Volcanic ash can affect people hundreds of miles away from the cone of a volcano.
Sideways directed volcanic explosions, known as "lateral blasts," can shoot large pieces of rock at very high speeds for several miles. These explosions can kill by impact, burial, or heat. They have been known to knock down entire forests.
Volcanic eruptions can be accompanied by other natural hazards, including earthquakes, mudflows and flash floods, rock falls and landslides, acid rain, fire, and (under special conditions) tsunamis.
Active volcanoes in the U.S. are found mainly in Hawaii, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest. Active volcanoes of the Cascade Mountain Range in California, Oregon, and Washington have created problems recently. The danger area around a volcano covers approximately a 20-mile radius. Some danger may exist 100 miles or more from a volcano, leaving Montana and Wyoming at risk.

CLIMATE IS ACTING WEIRD - NEWS
National Severe Weather Map
Surface Temperature Forecast Map
** Notice the little GREEN county in South Dakota (surrounded by white counties) - still under a flood warning after months!
The shipment was detected Saturday by National Guard members and officials at the Port of La Guaira, the country’s main customs station, located about 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) northwest of Caracas.
The cocaine was found to be distributed in packets hidden in boxes mixed in with others containing the cleaning products, including detergents and disinfectants, El Aissami said.

Authorities are investigating “six people, fully identified, who are not under arrest but are being questioned, and five companies directly involved in the customs procedures” for the containers’ shipment to Europe, El Aissami said.
The seized cocaine “comes from Colombia” and its “final destination (was) Spain,” the interior minister said, asking, “How does so much drug get out under the noses of Colombian authorities?”
The shipment bore “an identification logo of the criminal organization” to which the drug belongs, which is “one more element for the investigation,” El Aissami said.
Drug seizures are “a new result in the (Hugo Chavez) government’s head-on battle ... against the illicit trafficking of drugs,” which has translated into the seizure of “56 tons of different” drugs so far this year in Venezuela, El Aissami said.
Venezuela shares a land border of 2,219 kilometers (1,376 miles) with Colombia.

BlacklistedNews.com | Ramping up Afghanistan war to control Caspian oil and gas transport routes
The 800-pound gorilla standing in the auditorium at West Point is still waiting for an answer to why Obama made his surge-speech for 30,000 more troops and $30 billion to pay for them. That gorilla wonders “why” Obama pitched so hard for the US to stay and surge through Afghanistan and Pakistan. The reasons given were that the Afghanistan Taliban and Al Qaeda led by Osama bin Laden were the people that attacked us on 9/11, which was an iteration of George W. Bush’s reasons for the War on Terror. They are as phony now as the day Bush promised to smoke out Bin Laden.
“1. I am convinced that our security is at stake in and . This is the epicenter of the violent extremism practiced by al-Qaeda. It is from here that we were attacked on 9/11, and it is from here that new attacks are being plotted as I speak.
“2. It is important to recall why and our allies were compelled to fight a war in in the first place. We did not ask for this fight. On September 11, 2001, 19 men hijacked four airplanes and used them murder nearly 3,000 people.
“3: If I did not think that the security of the and the safety of the American people were at stake in , I would gladly order every single one of our troops home tomorrow.”
Also, as early as Oct. 14, 2001, a month and three days after 9/11, Bollyn wrote in The Great Game – The War For Caspian Oil And Gas: “President Bush’s ‘crusade’ against the Taliban of Afghanistan has more to do with control of the immense oil and gas resources of the Caspian Basin than it does with ‘rooting out terrorism.’
“Once again an American president from the Bush family is leading Americans down an oil-rich Middle Eastern warpath against ‘enemies of freedom and democracy.’
He told how the infamous Enron, the now bankrupt Texas gas and energy company, along with Amoco, British Petroleum, Chevron, Exxon Mobil and Unocal were wrapped in a cabal to suck up the multi-billion dollar reserves of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Terkmenistan, three freshly independent Soviet republics bordering the Caspian Sea. The American negotiators included the usual suspects, James Baker, Brent Snowcroft, Dick Cheney, and Jon Sununu.
