Tuesday Night News Update | December 1, 2009

The first day of December has now transformed into the first night of December ... at least, the earth is continuing to rotate and hasn't stopped and reversed (yet). There are human written records of reversals happening in the past ... and, as I say we need to wake up and realize we are on a planet within a tiny solar system - with a Sun reacting strangely to 'something' out there. And, the Ring of Fire is behaving like the cracking of the Pacific Plate is not too far fetched.

Seems those fraudulent scientists assisting our nation to be a part of the 'World Order' of those Western elitists' dreams (via the Copenhagen Treaty coming up for signing by Obama very shortly) ... UN scientists (using that word very lightly) would rather blame humans for 'global warming' - then talk a bit about the SUN!!

But then, the UN couldn't put a police grid around the Sun ... but, a grid is what they have in place here in the USA - working with NORTHCOM ... prepared for unhappy citizens.

Michael Jackson tops Web's search charts in 2009

Updated: 12/01/2009 12:12:18 PM PST

SAN FRANCISCO—Michael Jackson's stunning death made him the Internet's biggest star this year.

The quest to find out what happened to Jackson in his final hours on June 25 and celebrate his legacy elevated the late entertainer to the top of the Internet's search charts for 2009. On Yahoo, it ended singer Britney Spears' four-year reign on top.

The annual lists released Tuesday were compiled separately by Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc., which combined handle two-thirds of the world's Internet searches.

Jackson also grabbed the top spot on the third-largest U.S. search engine, Microsoft Corp.'s Bing, which announced its rankings Sunday. AOL, which relies on Google's search technology, also had Jackson at No. 1.

The lists are meant to provide a reading on our cultural pulse.

As usual, people using Yahoo's search engine in 2009 seemed to be most interested in celebrities and other diversions, even against the sobering backdrop of the worst recession in 70 years.

Google's audience seem more interested in using the Internet to connect with friends and family.

The online hangout Facebook and Tuenti, a similar socializing site in Spain, both made Google's Top 10, as did the popular communications tool Twitter. Microsoft's latest Windows operating system also grabbed a spot. Singer Lady Gaga was the only other celebrity besides Jackson on Google's Top 10.

Google, which processes more than six times the search volume that Yahoo does, has had a more diverse mix in its annual search rankings. The self-proclaimed King of Pop follows former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (2008) and Apple Inc.'s iPhone (2007) in Google's top spot.

Besides Jackson, the other new entrants on Yahoo's Top 10 list this year were: No. 2, "Twilight," the vampire story that has spawned two movies, including the recently released "New Moon," that are drawing hordes of teenage girls and their mothers; No. 4, Megan Fox, an actress who starred in the movie "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen;" No. 8, Kim Kardashian, part of a family with their own reality TV series; and No. 9, NASCAR, an automobile racing league.

"New Moon" also made Google's Top 10.

The other half of Yahoo's list consisted of 2008 holdovers. With the defending champion Spears dropping to fifth, the others were: No. 3, WWE, or World Wrestling Entertainment; No. 6, Naruto, a character created for the Japanese art form known as anime; No. 7, top-rated television series "American Idol;" and No. 10, RuneScape, an online video game.

Barack Obama made Yahoo's top searches list in 2008 as a presidential candidate and the President-elect, but fell off after he took office in 2009. The others falling out of the Top 10 were all actresses: Miley Cyrus, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan and Angelina Jolie.

Google also said Obama was among search requests that declined the most in 2009. Others losing steam included singer Amy Winehouse and actor Heath Ledger, whose January 2008 death triggered a searching frenzy.

Although the economy couldn't compete with entertainment in 2009, the hard times clearly weighed on people's minds. "Coupons" and "unemployment" were the most requested searches tied to finances, according to Yahoo.

Ask.com, another major search engine, focused its list on the most popular questions posed on its search engine. "How do I get out of debt?" was the second-ranking question of the year.

No. 1? "How much should I weigh?"

OBAMA BUMPS 'CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS'...

The Worst Kind Of Scheduling Conflict.

President Barack Obama is slated to deliver a prime-time address on Tuesday night in which he'll lay out his plans for the American war in Afghanistan.

The address before the United States Military Academy at West Point on Tuesday night will not only be used to announce the immediate order to deploy roughly 30,000 more troops, but the administration will also use the occasion to convey how it intends to turn the fight over to the Kabul government, the New York Times reported.

But the administration may also face an unforeseen enemy as it lays out its long-awaited plans. And they are loud and they are legion: We're talking about preschoolers and their parents.

That's because ABC-TV was scheduled to present its annual screening of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" at 8 p.m. tomorrow night. And we don't know about you, but that show is pretty sacrosanct around our house and not to be trifled with lightly.

A call to the White House may be in order here. We hear it's pretty easy to get through these days ...

WHAT IS HILLARY CLINTON UP TO NOW???

Foreign Policy - Briefings | State Department - Mondy Highlights - December 1, 2009

Tue, 12/01/2009 - 10:00am

In which we scour the transcript of the State Department's daily presser so you don't have to. Here are the highlights of Monday's press briefing by Department Spokesman (and Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) representative nominee) Ian Kelly:

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Australian Prime Minister
Kevin Rudd Monday to discuss Afghanistan, Asia, and climate change. Later Monday she went to New York to receive an award at the Amsterdam News Educational Fund 100th Anniversary Gala and she also received the Eisenhower Award from Business Executives for National Security.

Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg left for Athens Monday night to attend the OSCE foreign ministerial meeting. Clinton was supposed to go, but had to hang back because of Tuesday's rollout of the administration's new Afghanistan-Pakistan strategy and her testimony before Congress on Wednesday and Thursday. Clinton will go to Brussels on Thursday afternoon for the NATO ministerial meeting.

Clinton spoke with 10 foreign ministers on Thanksgiving about Afghanistan, but Kelly would not confirm that she asked French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner for 1,500 new French troops there.

Kelly said its now unlikely that State Department negotiators will be able to finish a follow on to the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) with Russia by the time it expires Dec. 5. "I think that what we're saying now is that we're hoping to get this draft agreement by the end of December. I don't want to raise expectations necessarily that we're going to be able to work out everything by this Saturday," he said.

The IAEA offer for Iran to have its uranium enriched outside of the country is "still on the table," Kelly said, despite that IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei said that talks with Iran over the proposal were at a "dead end." "if we don't get a positive response, we're going to start shifting our focus over to the other track, the track of pressure," Kelly said, not specifically endorsing the conventionally wise end of the year deadline.

Kelly said he was not aware of statements by North Korea's leaders that they are planning to announce they will return to the Six Party Talks when Ambassador Stephen Bosworth goes to Pyongyang next week, despite reports in the Asian press.

Kelly declined to comment on the news that Chelsea Clinton is engaged to her long time boyfriend Marc Mazvinsky.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is the world's largest security-oriented intergovernmental organization. Its mandate includes issues such as arms control, human rights, freedom of the press and fair elections. Most of its 3,500-plus staff are engaged in field operations, with only around 10% in its headquarters.

The OSCE is an ad hoc organization under the United Nations Charter (Chap. VIII), and is concerned with early warning, conflict prevention, crisis management and post-conflict rehabilitation. Its 56 participating States are from Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia and North America and cover most of the northern hemisphere. It was created during the Cold War era as an East-West forum.

EMERGENCY STOVE - GOODWILL FONDUE SET

The same clean burning, odorless and smoke free gel used by food service professionals. Ignites immediately with the touch of a match and burns steadily and intensely until consumed. Safe, non-expolsive gel remains solid while burning so it can't spill if accidentally tipped over. Smart Can heat indicator tells you when it is hot. Heats up to 200 degrees. Available in two sizes.

  • 2.6 oz burns 45 minutes and fits many fondue pot and chafing dish regulators.

You can buy Denatured Alcohol at Walmart, hardware stores, etc

3 ounces of denatured alcohol will burn approximately 90 minutes

Denatured Alcohol

Use for thinning shellac and cleaning tools after applying shellac. Use also as a cleaner and degreaser for glassware, windows, metal and fabrics. A clean burning fuel for chafing dishes, wick-type alcohol lamps and stoves.

GENERAL SET-UP INSTRUCTIONS

1. Always operate your fondue set on a level, stable table or other flat, stable surface.

2. Always set up the fondue set on a heat-resistant surface like a hot pad, wooden cutting board or ceramic tiles.

3. Keep the fondue set away from children and always store burner and denatured alcohol in a child-safe place.

4. Before using the fondue pot, always make sure the handle is firmly attached and that the pot fits securely on its stand.

5. Keep the alcohol burner cover handy while the set is in use, so the flame can be extinguished when cooking is complete.

ALCOHOL BURNER DIRECTIONS

1. An Alcohol Burner is designed to use only denatured alcohol (available at hardware stores, and drug stores) or liquid fondue fuel (available in gourmet shops and some other specialty stores.)

2.
Do not overfill the alcohol burner. Use no more than 3 fluid ounces of denatured alcohol, or liquid fondue fuel, to fill your burner. More alcohol may cause excessive flames. 3 ounces will burn approximately 90 minutes. If less time is required, use 2 ounces of fuel.

3. Immediately wipe away any spilled alcohol or fuel. Always
cover and remove the container of fuel from near the burner before lighting the burner.

4. Place the burner in the stand and use a match to light at the center hole.
Do not use a lighter nor tip the burner to ignite.

5. Use the moveable handle on the burner to adjust the flame. For higher flames, leave holes open. To reduce flames, rotate handle to partially cover the holes.

6.
Do not move or tip the burner or stand once the burner is lit.

7.
Never add alcohol or fuel to a lit or hot burner. Always extinguish the flame and allow the burner to cool before refueling.

8. To extinguish flame, place the burner cover on top of burner to cover completely.

TENT CITY NEWS

Homeless Tent Cities In Colorado Springs Grow

COLORADO SPRINGS - Homeless camps have multiplied along the banks of Monument and Fountain Creek, despite there being more money in our community to address the problem.

Some estimate close to 100 makeshift homes are now up. Those who live there and those trying to help both blame the economy.

"A lot of them are a lot of them are wanting work," said Donald "Duck" Carver who's been camping out since August.

"I've got a winterized test and insulated it too," said Carver.

But there is also a fresh supply of federal and state money to the tune of more than $2 million that's been earmarked to help the homeless in Colorado Springs and El Paso County. The manager of the new program says most of the money will help prevent homelessness.

"It allows us to provide rental assistance, utility assistance for persons who are experiencing or may be in jeopardy of losing their housing," said Valorie Jordan, coordinator of the money for the City of Colorado Springs. The money comes from the President's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Jordan says they will rely on community resources already in place to provide the services but this money is unique.

"We can provide up to 18 months of assistance which is the longest any agency in our community has been able to provide funding," said Jordan.

The money will also provide new affordable housing like the Bradford Commons units that just opened. They provide one and two bedroom housing starting at $365 dollars a month.

She admits that this money is really targeted at preventing homelessness and not on eliminating tent cities creek side. On the campgrounds, Carver says most people just don't know that the money is available to help. He says advocacy groups need to a better job in communicating the availability of help.

"Most if they got the services they would use them," said Carver.

Sri Lanka News | Tsunami victim found begging in Ratnapura after five years

December 1, 2009

A woman who lost her husband and two sons during the tsunami at Peraliya in the southern coast, and believed dead for the last five years was found begging on the streets of Ratnapura identified by her kinsfolk yesterday.

The woman apparently out of her mind after facing the tragedy was believed to have died in the tsunami. One of her brothers, W.A. Premawardena who had come to Ratnapura had seen a beggar woman in the town resembling his missing sister.

He had gone back to his family at Beligalla, Beliatta in the Hambantota District and informed about the woman whom he believed was his sister. They had come to Ratnapura and informed police who brought her to the police station where her sister had identified her from a scar on her leg, Chief Headquarters Inspector Lalith Pussella said.

Her family members said her husband was a senior official of the District Secretariat and she would have lost her sanity after the tragedy. They thought that she too had perished in the tsunami. They took her back with them to their hometown yesterday.

New Zealand company launches rocket to space

Company hoping to provide launch facilities for business and scientists

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A New Zealand company launched a rocket into space Monday in what it claimed was the first private missile launch in the Southern Hemisphere.

About 50 people gathered on Great Mercury Island, off North Island, to watch the launch of the 20-foot (6-meter), 150-pound (60 kilogram) projectile, named Atea-1. Rocket Labs developed it without any government money.

The rocket burned for 20 seconds to reach its target speed of up to Mach 5 — or 3,100 miles (5,000 kilometers) per hour, reaching an altitude of at least 60 miles (100 kilometers). It spent up to 20 minutes in the atmosphere before splashing back down into the south Pacific Ocean...

Montserrat - Beautiful - but, has an active volcano!

Soufriere HillsMontserratReadEruptionAlert Level 3

http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/onthego/update_montserrat_W04hERT5T227QOlZ6JeiaI

ACTIVE: Soufrière Hills volcano

A RISING number of power cuts across Montserrat has been blamed on ash from the country’s active Soufrière Hills volcano.

Peter White, managing director of Montserrat Utilities Ltd, told Caribbeannetnews.com that the outages have been linked to more ash falling on power lines in inhabited areas.

White said the company could not control the unscheduled electricity supply interruptions because it cannot predict where the faults will happen.

“When you have the ash falling on the power lines followed by the rain, the weight of it shorts out the lines and trips the feeders. It is similar to a fuse blowing,” White said.

“The problem is also compounded when there are pyroclastic flows (from the volcano), which often causes lightning, and this also affects the electrical supply system.”

The news service said that since October there has been growing activity at the Soufriére Hills volcano, which led to a mass evacuation from parts of Montserrat when it erupted in 1995.

Winds have also recently sent more ash into the safe zones of the island.

The national water and electricity company said the fall of ash has also hampered its plans to fix one of its power generators by making it difficult to identify the specific problem areas.

Pyroclastic flows from Montserrat dome collapses have flowed down the White River creating a new delta where they entered the sea. It is uncertain if this delta will survive or be eroded by seawaves

Soufriere Hills, a stratovolcano on the island of Montserrat, began erupting on July 18, 1995. This is the first recorded eruption of this volcano in historic time. The initial small phreatic eruption produced minor ash that spread around the island. Periods of intense seismic activity were associated with strong venting of steam and ash. A new vent formed southwest of Castle Peak, an old volcanic dome.

Calif. projects historic low for water deliveries

The Associated Press
Updated: 12/01/2009 11:49:29 AM PST

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—California officials say they expect to release a record-low amount of water to some 25 million state residents next year if the drought continues.

The Department of Water Resources projects it will deliver just 5 percent of what was requested from its contractors. The state water also irrigates 750,000 farm acres.

Lester Snow, the department's director, says the state is assuming it will be dealing with a fourth year of drought conditions.

Water deliveries would be increased if more rain and snow falls in the state over the winter months. That's a possibility if El Nino weather patterns hit California.

Last year, the state predicted it would deliver 15 percent but boosted that number to 40 percent by May.

Barack Obama to order 34,000 troops to Afghanistan 01 Dec 2009 President Obama will announce today the deployment of an extra 34,000 American troops to Afghanistan, according to sources briefed since the President issued new orders to his military commanders. The figure, reported last night by The Washington Post, was close to previous estimates and will take the total US troop strength in Afghanistan to more than 100,000.

British troops in Afghanistan to increase to over 10,000 --Gordon Brown announces extra 500 soldiers to be deployed next month 30 Nov 2009 Gordon Brown announced today that Britain's total military effort in Afghanistan is to increase to over 10,000 troops. In a detailed Commons statement, the prime minister confirmed that all the conditions had been met to allow an extra 500 troops to be deployed in December - taking the force level to 9,500. But he also disclosed that when special forces were included, the "total military effort" in Afghanistan would be in excess of 10,000 troops.

Chilcot inquiry hears Bush began Iraq war drumbeat three days after 9/11 --Blair foreign policy adviser David Manning says US president [sic] talked up possible links between Saddam and al-Qaida 30 Nov 2009 George Bush tried to make a connection between Iraq and 'al-Qaida' in a conversation with Tony Blair three days after the 9/11 attacks, according to Blair's foreign policy adviser of the time. Sir David Manning told the official inquiry into the war that Bush, speaking to Blair by phone on 14 September 2001, "said that he thought there might be evidence that there was some connection between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida."The prime minister's response to this was that the evidence would have to be very compelling indeed to justify taking any action against Iraq," Manning said. Blair followed up the conversation with a letter stressing the need to focus on the situation in Afghanistan, where the attacks originated. But by the time Blair went to visit Bush at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, in April 2002 the British were "very conscious that Iraq would be on the agenda", Manning said.

Iraq inquiry: Blair told Bush he was willing to join, 11 months before war --Adviser tells of crucial moment at Texas ranch --Chilcot panel attacked for failure to press questions 30 Nov 2009 Tony Blair made it clear to George Bush at a meeting in Texas 11 months before the Iraq invasion that he would be prepared to join the US in toppling Saddam Hussein, the inquiry into the war was told today. The prime minister repeatedly told the US president that British policy was to back United Nations attempts to seek Iraq's disarmament, Sir David Manning, his foreign policy adviser, told the inquiry. However, Blair was "absolutely prepared to say he was willing to contemplate regime change if [UN-backed measures] did not work", Manning said. If it proved impossible to pursue the UN route, then Blair would be "willing to use force", Manning emphasised.

Rep. Hinchey: Bush Purposely Let Bin Laden Escape to Justify Iraq War 30 Nov 2009 Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) claimed on MSNBC this afternoon that the Bush administration purposely let Osama bin Laden get away in 2001 so they could use al-Qaeda as an excuse to invade Iraq. "Look what happened with regard to our invasion into Afghanistan, how we apparently intentionally let bin Laden get away. How we intentionally did not follow the Taliban and al-Qaeda as they were escaping," Hinchey said. "That was done by the previous administration because they knew very well that if they would capture al-Qaeda, there would be no justification for an invasion in Iraq." When host David Shuster pushed back, Hinchey stood by his claim. "There's no question that the leader of the military operations of the U.S. called back our military. Called them back from going after the head of al-Qaeda," he said. "I don't think [the theory] will strike a lot of people as crazy. I think it'll strike a lot of people as accurate," Hinchey said. "That's exactly what happened."

Lt. Col. James C. Gentry, of Williams, Ind., died of lung cancer Wednesday. Gentry, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, last spring joined a federal lawsuit filed in December 2008. It accuses Texas-based KBR and several related companies of concealing the risks faced by 136 Indiana National Guard soldiers potentially exposed to a cancer-causing agent, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The high court told the lower court to re-examine the issue. The justices sent the case back to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, in Manhattan, which ruled in 2008 that the pictures should be released to the public. But at the request of the Obama administration, the Second Circuit later postponed its own order, setting the stage for the administration to take the case [Department of Defense v. A.C.L.U., No. 09-160] to the Supreme Court.

Honduran vote held amid repression, mass abstention By Bill Van Auken 01 Dec 2009 Sunday’s national elections in Honduras were marked by systematic repression against opponents of the country’s coup regime and reports of record abstention. Nonetheless, the Obama administration in Washington hailed the results as a "very important step forward for Honduras" and a “legitimate way out” of the crisis that began with the military overthrow of the country’s elected President Manuel Zelaya on June 28. The election was held just a day after the coup’s five-month mark, with Zelaya still trapped in the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa, where he sought refuge two months ago after staging a clandestine return to Honduras.

Harbour said there were 28 crew members on board the 300,000-ton ship. [LOL! Hood --Review expected to cite data sharing, limits on reporting threats 01 Dec 2009 A preliminary review of the federal government's handling of intelligence before the shooting at Fort Hood is on its way to the White House, and sources said they expect the final result to address the limits of the Pentagon's ability to monitor potential threats within the armed forces and information sharing by the FBI. The deadline for various agencies involved in the case to submit reports to Obama homeland security and counterterrorism adviser John Brennan fell Monday, but administration officials said it would be a week or more before they offer recommendations for changes in the wake of the attack.

The Record of Bergen County reported Sunday that Hal Turner received thousands of dollars from the FBI to report on neo-Nazis and white supremacist groups and was sent undercover to Brazil. Turner also claims the FBI coached him to make racist, anti-Semitic and other threatening statements on his radio show, but the newspaper also found many federal officials were concerned that his audience might follow up on his violence rhetoric.

Police killed in 'ambush' outside US Air Force base --Perimeter security tightened at McChord AFB 30 Nov 2009 Four police officers were shot dead in a cold-blooded ambush at a coffee shop on the edge of a US Air Force base in America’s Pacific Northwest on Sunday. The four uniformed officers were gunned down while working on their laptop computers as they prepared for work around 8:30am local time. They were all wearing bullet-proof vests and their marked patrol cars were parked outside. The shooting took place at the Forza coffee shop, just across the street from the McChord Air Force Base outside Tacoma, Washington state. The killings immediately stirred fears of a repeat of the shooting spree that killed 13 people at the US Army base at Fort Hood, Texas on November 5. A spokesman at McChord Air Force Base said, however, that its 4,100 personnel had not been "locked down," although perimeter security had been tightened.

Man sought in deadly ambush had prison sentence commuted 30 Nov 2009 The man wanted for questioning in the fatal shooting of four police officers at a coffee shop had his 95-year prison sentence commuted by then-Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, authorities said late Sunday. The sheriff's office in Pierce County, where the ambush occurred Sunday morning, have not identified Maurice Clemmons as a suspect, but said it is looking for him as part of its investigation. Arkansas officials told the sheriff's office that Clemmons is the same person who received clemency from Huckabee in 2001, said sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer. Huckabee, a Republican presidential candidate in 2008, is considering a run for president in 2012. [Isn't it amazing? In one hour, the whole GOP path just magically cleared for Sarah Palin. --LRP]

Previous lead stories: Iraq Inquiry bombshell: Secret letter to reveal new Blair war lies 29 Nov 2009 An explosive secret letter that exposes how Tony Blair lied over the legality of the Iraq War can be revealed. The Chilcot Inquiry into the war will interrogate the former Prime Minister over the devastating 'smoking gun' memo, which warned him in the starkest terms the war was illegal. The Mail on Sunday can disclose that Attorney General Lord Goldsmith wrote the letter to Mr Blair in July 2002 - a full eight months before the war - telling him that deposing Saddam Hussein was a blatant breach of international law. It was intended to make Mr Blair call off the invasion, but he ignored it. Instead, a panicking Mr Blair issued instructions to gag Lord Goldsmith, banned him from attending Cabinet meetings and ordered a cover-up to stop the public finding out. He even concealed the bombshell information from his own Cabinet, fearing it would spark an anti-war revolt. The only people he told were a handful of cronies who were sworn to secrecy.

Denver voters will be asked to create UFO commission

Updated: 12/01/2009 11:38:50 AM MST

A proposal to create a Denver commission to study visitors from outer space will go before voters this summer after supporters gathered the required signatures to get it on the ballot.

City Clerk and Recorder Stephanie O'Malley sent a letter on Monday to Jeff Peckman, who submitted the signatures, stating she had deemed them sufficient.

The ordinance change required 3,974 valid signatures. Peckman submitted more than 10,000 signatures.

Peckman said he will ask voters to approve creating the commission from "grants, gifts and donations."

The seven-member commission would be tasked with collecting evidence that extraterrestrials and their "UFO vehicles" have been visiting Earth.

Peckman, 55, of Denver, and a self-described entrepreneur, said the election on the issue would go with the next regularly scheduled citywide election, currently set for Aug. 10.

He predicted that the election would cause high-profile believers in extraterrestrial to come out and tell Denver voters about what they know.

"They will see there is an attentive audience, and that people are digging into this issue," Peckman said. "They will see there is an opportunity to say something when people are paying attention."

In 2003, Peckman pushed a "Safety Through Peace" initiative that voters rejected. If that proposal had passed, it would have required the city to implement systematic, stress-reducing techniques or programs that are scientifically proven to decrease stress and would financially benefit the city.

Peckman had suggested the peace-inducing techniques could involve everything from more nutritious food in public schools to mass meditation sessions to piping soothing music into public buildings to reduce stress and violence.

The initiatives Peckman has pushed has generated concern among some city council members who fear the threshold for ballot initiatives invites frivolous initiatives. The current system for getting an ordinance change on the ballot pegs the number of signatures required to a percentage of the last mayoral vote, which in recent years has been low.
