New 6.1 mag quake hits Haiti today - not in the same place as the big one ... so it being an 'aftershock' is very questionable. Haiti: An Unwelcome Katrina Redux by Cynthia McKinney January 19, 2010 President Obama's response to the tragedy in Haiti has been robust in military deployment and puny in what the Haitians need most: food; first responders and their specialized equipment; doctors and medical facilities and equipment; and engineers, heavy equipment, and heavy movers. Sadly, President Obama is dispatching Presidents Bush and Clinton, and thousands of Marines and U.S. soldiers. By contrast, Cuba has over 400 doctors on the ground and is sending in more; Cubans, Argentinians, Icelanders, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, and many others are already on the ground working--saving lives and treating the injured. Senegal has offered land to Haitians willing to relocate to Africa. The United States, on the day after the tragedy struck, confirmed that an entire Marine Expeditionary Force was being considered "to help restore order," when the "disorder" had been caused by an earthquake striking Haiti; not since 1751, 1770, 1842, 1860, and 1887 had Haiti experienced an earthquake. But, I remember the bogus reports of chaos and violence the led to the deployment of military assets, including Blackwater, in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. One Katrina survivor noted that the people needed food and shelter and the U.S. government sent men with guns. Much to my disquiet, it seems, here we go again. From the very beginning, U.S. assistance to Haiti has looked to me more like an invasion than a humanitarian relief operation. On Day Two of the tragedy, a C-130 plane with a military assessment team landed in Haiti, with the rest of the team expected to land soon thereafter. The stated purpose of this team was to determine what military resources were needed. An Air Force special operations team was also expected to land to provide air traffic control. Now, the reports are that the U.S. is not allowing assistance in, shades of Hurricane Katrina, all over again. On President Obama's orders military aircraft "flew over the island, mapping the destruction." So, the first U.S. contribution to the humanitarian relief needed in Haiti were reconnaissance drones whose staffing are more accustomed to looking for hidden weapon sites and surface-to-air missile batteries than wrecked infrastructure. The scope of the U.S. response soon became clear: aircraft carrer, Marine transport ship, four C-140 airlifts, and evacuations to Guantanamo. By the end of Day Two, according to the Washington Post report, the United States had evacuated to Guantanamo Bay about eight [8] severely injured patients, in addition to U.S. Embassy staffers, who had been "designated as priorities by the U.S. Ambassador and his staff." On Day Three we learned that other U.S. ships, including destroyers, were moving toward Haiti. Interestingly, the Washington Post reported that the standing task force that coordinates the U.S. response to mass migration events from Cuba ... America Is More Like Haiti Than We’d Like to Think
by James Wesley, Rawles
SurvivalBlog.com
The recent earthquake in the island nation of Haiti illustrates the fragility of all societies. While Haiti is unusual in its lack of infrastructure and its high dependence on foreign aid–more than half of its annual government budget comes from foreign aid–it is still similar in many ways to other nations: From the 1960s to the turn of the 21st century, as in many other nations, Haiti became an urbanized nation. Before the 1960s a substantial portion of Haitian society still lived on rural semi-self sufficient farmsteads. But as urbanization and specialization went on, fewer and fewer people lived off the land and more and more citizens became dependent on foreign aid and a scant number of industrial jobs. This trend has been repeated around the globe, making nearly all societies increasingly vulnerable to disasters, man-made or natural. The resiliency of traditional agrarian societies has sadly become a thing of the past. Here in America, 2% of the population now feeds the other 98%. This is now something that First, Second, and Third World nations have in common. America is more like Haiti than we’d like to think. Human nature is the same in every culture and nation: fundamentally sinful.
The Banks Are Going Down January 20th, 2010 A Banner Year for Bank Failures by Karen De Coster While the government spent zillions trying to prop up its swine flu propaganda campaign in order to grab unprecedented new powers by putting the populace under the spell of a doomsday crisis, duplicitous public officials who paint catastrophic landscapes with pink ribbons and teddy bears are obscuring the real calamities. The blighted landscape before us has been glossed over with a swarm of lies and appeasements. What’s coming down the pike is a crush of oncoming bank failures. |

Going to Arctic Circle to hide from protesters
Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty will host G-7 finance chiefs and central bankers Feb. 5-6 in Iqaluit, a town 195 miles south of the Arctic Circle. He says he’ll press for more unity after the U.S., U.K. and France imposed levies on banks or bonuses even after Group of 20 leaders in September promised to “raise standards together.”
“We’re trying to have a synchronized approach and clearly some jurisdictions are going in different directions,” Flaherty said in a Jan. 12 interview in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
New Mapping Shows Depth Of "Hot Spot" That Fuels Yellowstone National Park Detailed mapping shows the "hot spot" that fuels Yellowstone National Park's geothermal features is more than 400 miles deep, and might have been responsible for volcanic activity in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho 17 million years ago. The mapping contradicts previous theories that Yellowstone's geothermal features were powered by a relatively shallow -- perhaps 250 miles deep -- hot spot. Additionally, University of Utah researchers say the "banana-shaped magma chamber" they mapped runs at an upward angle from below the park's northwestern corner and is 20 percent larger than previously thought. As a result, they say, "a future cataclysmic eruption could be even larger than thought." Those are among the findings produced by four National Science Foundation-funded studies that are reported on in the current issue of the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research. The studies were overseen by Robert Smith, a research professor and professor emeritus of geophysics at the University of Utah and the coordinating scientist for the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. “We have a clear image, using seismic waves from earthquakes, showing a mantle plume that extends from beneath Yellowstone,’’ the geophysicist said. The plume angles downward 150 miles to the west-northwest of Yellowstone and reaches a depth of at least 410 miles, Professor Smith said in a release the university issued Monday. The study estimates the plume is mostly hot rock, with 1 percent to 2 percent molten rock in "sponge-like voids" within the hot rock. READ MORE |
Government is Too Big to Succeed
Rep. Ron Paul
TexasStraightTalk
The Pecora Commission was stacked with big government sympathizers who blamed the free market and the gold standard without question, and without any consideration of government interference in the economy. This panel is no different. Never will they contemplate how government steered us into this crisis, and what perverse incentives can be removed or repealed so that the market will function more smoothly. Never will they discuss how investment should come from savings, not debt. Never will it occur to them that fiat money, artificially low interest rates and the whole Federal Reserve System might be unwise and unstable, not to mention unconstitutional. The answer will always be more government regulation and oversight. It is predictable that this government panel will eventually come to the firm conclusion that government needs to be bigger, and that the market is just too free.

8 killed in central Virginia shootings
APPOMATTOX, Va. - A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation tells The Associated Press that eight people have been killed in shootings in central Virginia.
The official asked for anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak about the investigation.
State police say there were multiple deaths and injuries Tuesday and that a lone shooter was responsible. They say more than 100 law enforcement officials had the suspect circled in woods where they believe he is hiding.
Police could not say what sparked the violence.
State police say the gunman also fired at a state police helicopter, which had to land with a ruptured fuel tank after one or more rounds struck it.

LOS ANGELES – After two days of lightening, flooding and even a tornado, officials tried to get ahead of the next round of powerful storms that are pummeling Southern California by ordering evacuations in mudslide-prone foothill neighborhoods.
Los Angeles police officers went door-to-door in the Tujunga neighborhood late Tuesday, handing out flyers and asking residents of about 200 homes to be out of their homes by Wednesday morning.
With debris basins full and the fire-scorched soil saturated, Los Angeles County fire officials plan to issue mandatory evacuation orders for about 600 homes beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday in anticipation of the third and longer drenching.
The foothills have received almost 5 inches of rain since Sunday and Wednesday's storm is predicted to drop 4 to 8 inches on the area, Department of Public Works Director Gail Farber said.

Lawmakers in Arizona have proposed a law that would require state officials to begin independently verifying the accuracy of newly required documents affirming the constitutional eligibility of any candidate for the U.S. presidency.
"Certainly, there has been controversy over President Obama and his birth certificate, where he was born, etc.," state Sen. Sylvia Allen, R-Snowflake, told the Arizona Capitol Times. "It just makes sense and will stop any controversy in the future to just show you are a natural born citizen."
She is one of about three dozen lawmakers to sign on as co-sponsors.
The plan would essentially have the same effect as the federal law proposed by Rep. Bill Posey, R-Fla.
The provisions of Posey's H.R. 1503 are straightforward:
"To amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to require the principal campaign committee of a candidate for election to the office of President to include with the committee's statement of organization a copy of the candidate's birth certificate, together with such other documentation as may be necessary to establish that the candidate meets the qualifications for eligibility to the Office of President under the Constitution."
The bill also provides:"Congress finds that under … the Constitution of the United States, in order to be eligible to serve as President, an individual must be a natural born citizen of the United States who has attained the age of 35 years and has been a resident within the United States for at least 14 years."
The sponsors' goal is to have the bill become effective for the 2012 presidential election. The legislation now is pending in a House committee and has more than a dozen co-sponsors.
Virus can put child porn on your computer
"It's the worst possible scenario that you could have," said Robert Dobbs with the Geek Squad.
Dobbs tells 10 Connects they have not had any local cases, but says there have been several cases nationally.
The Associated Press recently finished an investigation and found cases in which innocent people were branded as pedophiles because the virus attacked their computer. In the case of Michael Fiola, the AP says he was arrested and charged before he was finally exonerated. Fiola says he spent $250,000 to clear his name.
To best avoid getting the virus, Dobbs says follow these tips:
* Have an antivirus program that automatically scans your harddrive.
* Make sure you empty out your temporary internet files.
* Avoid file sharing websites.

Bible Possibly Written Centuries Earlier, Text Suggests
Scientists have discovered the earliest known Hebrew writing — an inscription dating from the 10th century B.C., during the period of King David's reign.
The breakthrough could mean that portions of the Bible were written centuries earlier than previously thought. (The Bible's Old Testament is thought to have been first written down in an ancient form of Hebrew.)
Until now, many scholars have held that the Hebrew Bible originated in the 6th century B.C., because Hebrew writing was thought to stretch back no further. But the newly deciphered Hebrew text is about four centuries older, scientists announced this month.
"It indicates that the Kingdom of Israel already existed in the 10th century BCE and that at least some of the biblical texts were written hundreds of years before the dates presented in current research," said Gershon Galil, a professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Haifa in Israel, who deciphered the ancient text.
