NEW ZEALAND HAS AN INCOMING!
Australian scientist spots gigantic iceberg headed for New Zealand

At 500 metres long, the iceberg is almost twice as long as the Titanic.
Biologist Dean Miller spotted it off Macquarie Island - halfway between Australia and Antarctica.
Experts say the iceberg could prove dangerous if it breaks up as it approaches warmer waters.

Wall Street Journal | States May Cut 900,000 Jobs Without More U.S. Aid, Think Tank Says
November 11, 2009 - State and local governments in the U.S. may be forced to cut 900,000 jobs next year without additional help from the federal government, according to a report released by a prominent liberal think tank Wednesday.
To prevent state budget cuts from imperiling an economy just beginning to recover, policy makers should send additional stimulus funds in 2010 to state and local governments, urged officials at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a Washington think tank.
If the government does not send more economic relief, deficit-strapped states trying to balance their budgets will have to make deep cuts in services and jobs. Those cuts could shave nearly a full point off the country’s gross domestic product and result in the loss of 900,000 jobs, the report predicts.
“Cutting services, laying off workers and raising taxes would further weaken the economy” at a time when its recovery would be especially fragile, said report co-author Iris Lav, a senior adviser at the think tank. FULL STORY
MercuryNews.com | U.S. is doing no good in Afghanistan
Eight years ago, women's rights were used as one of the excuses to start this war. But today, Afghanistan is still facing a women's rights catastrophe. Life for most Afghan women resembles a type of hell that is never reflected in the Western mainstream media.
In 2001, the U.S. helped return to power the worst misogynist criminals, such as the Northern Alliance warlords and drug lords. These men ought to be considered a photocopy of the Taliban. The only difference is that the Northern Alliance warlords wear suits and ties and cover their faces with the mask of democracy while they occupy government positions. But they are responsible for much of the disaster today in Afghanistan, thanks to the U.S. support they enjoy.
The U.S. and its allies are getting ready to offer power to the medieval Taliban by creating an imaginary category called the "moderate Taliban" and inviting them to join the government. A man who was near the top of the list of most-wanted terrorists eight years ago, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, has been invited to join the government.
Over the past eight years the U.S. has helped turn my country into the drug capital of the world through its support of drug lords. Today, 93 percent of all opium in the world is produced in Afghanistan. Many members of Parliament and high ranking officials openly benefit from the drug trade. President Karzai's own brother is a well known drug trafficker. FULL STORY

PRINCE CHARLES HAS PROTESTERS IN CANADA AND HILLARY HAS HERS IN THE PHILIPPINES

Protesters marched in front of the U.S. embassy in Manila on Wednesday, a day before U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrives

It will be Clinton's first visit to the Philippines as state secretary. Her plane is scheduled to land at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the afternoon.

Clinton will also meet with typhoon victims in Manila, commemorate Veterans Day at the American Cemetery in Makati City, and swear in new Peace Corps volunteers at the U.S. embassy.
The secretary will depart Manila for Singapore Friday to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Conference meeting.
LA Times | Schwarzenegger to visit troops in Iraq next week

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is planning a short trip to Iraq early next week to visit U.S. troops, his aides said.
The governor has wanted to make such a trip “for the last couple of years, but he hasn’t had the opportunity,” said spokesman Matt David.
In July, Schwarzenegger aborted a planned trip to Iraq because of the state’s budget crisis.
While it was unclear whether the actor-turned-politician would provide any entertainment for soldiers, if he holds true to form they will at least get to hear him say, “I’ll be back.”
David said he could not release Schwarzenegger’s exact schedule for security reasons.
Houston Press | Vietnam Vet to America: Stick Veterans Day Where The Sun Don't Shine

Today, Collins continues, the VA tells Iraq and Afghanistan vets, some returning from multiple combat tours, others suffering from traumatic brain injury, PTSD, depleted uranium exposure and/or plain-old amputations and spinal injuries to "wait their turn," one that is a long time in coming for nearly all and too late for too many.
"So, from where I sit," he continues, "this nation can take its Veterans Day banners, parades (from which veterans wishing to express the sentiments embodied in Armistice Day are routinely excluded) and red-banner sales of goods manufactured in China and shove it all where the sun don't shine." BBC | Crime rings boost ivory smuggling
The last year has seen a major increase in the illegal ivory trade, with more involvement from organised crime.
November 11, 2009 - Figures compiled by Traffic, the agency charged with monitoring the trade, show a doubling in the volume of illegal ivory seized from 2008 to 2009.
Researchers believe most of it is poached in West and Central Africa, while China is the main destination.
Traffic says there is no evidence that last year's one-off legal sale of ivory in southern Africa boosted smuggling.
The volume of ivory seized is not a complete indication of the size of the illegal trade, because the effectiveness of police and customs authorities can vary from year to year and only a fraction of illegal consignments are discovered. FULL STORY
