"Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people"

Monday Morning - February 15, 2010

It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.
-Samuel Adams

"Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people"

- John Adams - Second President (1797 - 1801)

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

In the First Amendment, the Founding Fathers gave the free press the protection it must have to fulfill its essential role in our democracy. The press was to serve the governed, not the governors. The Government's power to censor the press was abolished so that the press would remain forever free to censure the Government. The press was protected so that it could bare the secrets of government and inform the people. Only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose deception in government. And paramount among the responsibilities of a free press is the duty to prevent any part of the government from deceiving the people and sending them off to distant lands to die of foreign fevers and foreign shot and shell. -Justice Black. Yellowstone Earthquake Swarm Summary as of 11 February 2010

The rate of earthquake occurrence in the Madison Plateau area is now at background levels. As of February 11, 2010 4:00 PM MST there have been 1,805 earthquakes located. The swarm began January 17, 2010 around 1:00 PM MST about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of the Old Faithful area on the northwestern edge of the Yellowstone Caldera. Swarms have occurred in this area several times over the past 30 years. Visual observation of landforms and geothermal features by Yellowstone National Park personnel did not show any changes that could be attributed to the earthquakes.

This swarm is now the second largest recorded swarm at Yellowstone. It was longer (in time) and included more earthquakes than last year's swarm beneath Yellowstone Lake (December '08/January '09).

Caribbean's Montserrat Island battles ash cloud from Soufriere Hills Volcano

Posted on: Sunday, 14 February 2010, 10:50 CST

Many flights around the Caribbean remained cancelled Saturday due to clouds of ash spewed up into the skies on the island of Montserrat.

The ash forced LIAT, the region's biggest airline, to temporarily suspend flights in and out of Antigua's V.C. Bird International airport.

Montserrat's Soufriere Hills volcano erupted Thursday, sending a plume of ash 10 kilometers high into the sky, the Montserrat Volcano Observatory said.

"The continued ash hanging in the atmosphere presents a risk to planes and to the security of passengers," the police in the nearby island of Guadeloupe said in a statement. READ MORE

Losses from defaults on commercial real estate loans maturing in the next few years could go as high as $300 billion, threatening to topple nearly 3,000 community banks nationwide, a federal watchdog group has concluded

'Blair covering up paedophile scandal?'

In 1999, an international investigation of child pornographers and paedophiles run by Britain's National Criminal Intelligence Service, code named Operation Ore, resulted in 7,250 suspects being identified in the United Kingdom alone. Some 1850 people were criminally charged in the case and there were 1451 convictions. Almost 500 people were interviewed "under caution" by police, meaning they were suspects. Some 900 individuals remain under investigation. In early 2003, British police began to close in on some top suspects in the Operation Ore investigation, including senior members of Blair's government.

Iran begins drilling for oil in Caspian Sea

The Islamic Republic of Iran has started drilling its first exploratory well in the Caspian Sea to search for oil in the resource-rich body of water.

“The Amir-Kabir semi-submersible drilling rig has started exploration drillings in the Caspian Sea. It will drill the country's first exploratory well at a depth of 1,550 meters under the seabed,” North Drilling Company Managing Director Hedayatollah Khademi told the Mehr News Agency on Saturday.

US banks facing $1.4 Trillion crisis over commercial property loans

America's fragile high street banks are bracing themselves for a fresh financial crunch as a wave of commercial property mortgages go sour on offices, shops and factories, causing losses of up to $300bn (£192bn) hitting nearly 3,000 small- and medium-sized financial institutions.

A congressional oversight panel charged with scrutinising the Obama administration's bailout efforts has warned that $1.4tn of loans covering commercial premises will reach maturity between 2011 and 2014. After a plunge in property prices, nearly half of these loans are underwater, with borrowers owing more than their underlying property is worth.

India Avoids Attack Blame, Rebuffs BJP Call to Suspend Talks

India’s ruling coalition refrained from singling out the perpetrators of yesterday’s bombing in the western city of Pune that killed nine people as the main opposition party demanded a suspension of talks with Pakistan.

Webmaster's Commentary:
It appears that some elements in the Indian government don't want these peace talks to go forward.
One has to wonder if the timing of the bombing was intended to prevent these very critical talks between two nuclear-armed countries from taking place.
The ruling Indian coalition was very prudent in its restraint, and in not immediately attempting to lay blame for the bombing before a thorough investigation could take place.
Hopefully, the "adults in the room" in Islamabad and New Delhi will take a deep breath, and move forward with the scheduled meeting on the 25th of this month.

Ahmadinejad: Iran doesn't need nukes, they haven't helped Israel

the president said that even with nuclear weapons, the Jewish state was unable to win the Second Lebanon War or succeed in Operation Cast Lead in Gaza.

Biofuels Algae to solve the Pentagon's jet fuel problem

The brains trust of the Pentagon says it is just months away from producing a jet fuel from algae for the same cost as its fossil-fuel equivalent.

The claim, which comes from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) that helped to develop the internet and satellite navigation systems, has taken industry insiders by surprise. A cheap, low-carbon fuel would not only help the US military, the nation's single largest consumer of energy, to wean itself off its oil addiction, but would also hold the promise of low-carbon driving and flying for all.

Webmaster's Commentary:
If true, and this work actually does create usable fuel, this will be a development which will stop some of the 21st century's "energy wars" in their tracks.
America's deadly robots rewrite the rules

Consider: for the first time ever, a civilian intelligence agency is manipulating robots from halfway around the world in a program of extrajudicial executions in a country with which Washington is not at war.

Consider, too: the drone wars were initiated under the presidency of George Bush. But it is the Democrat Barack Obama who has given them flight and stumped up sufficient funding to spark serious debate on the end of the ''Top Gun'' era of the fighter-pilot.

And there is this: despite decades of American disquiet about assassinations abroad and a shrill Republican critique of him as a security wuss, the professorial Obama is the new killer on the block, authorising more drone attacks in the first year of his term in office than Bush did in his entire presidency.

Israel may lack the military means for successful preemptive strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities, former Chief of Staff Dan Halutz told Channel 2 news on Saturday.

"I think that the State of Israel should not take it upon itself to be the flag-bearer of the entire Western world in the face of the Iranian threat," Halutz, a former air force commander, told Channel Two.

Webmaster's Commentary:
I find the timing of Halutz' statement interesting, in light of the fact that the US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mike Mullen, will be in Tel Aviv tomorrow to meet with his Israeli counterpart, Gabi Ashkenazi, Ehud Barak, and others.

What the Netanyahu government really wants is - yet again, as happened in Iraq - for the US to attack Iran to "neutralize" yet another of Israel's alleged existential threats in the Middle East.

I am hoping the US government won't take the bait on this one; but unfortunately, there are far too many people in the hall of power in Washington who see a war as a way to get out of the economic mess we're in.

There are two major reasons why we are not already attacking Iran. First, thanks to credible info on the net, the government hasn't been able to "sell" this war to the American people.

Secondly, with armed forces stretched in Iraq and Afghanistan, even with a huge contingent of hired mercenaries (which actually outnumber our forces right now in Afghanistan), we just don't have the troop strength right now to pull this off, no matter how superior our "whiz-bang" high tech weapons may be.

Any coming war against Iran has the capacity of going global, with Russia coming in on the side of Iran.
Please don't forget: Russia has nukes.

Unemployment checks are replacing paychecks. This has done nothing to restore our most important and good paying job sectors. This has done nothing and will do nothing towards putting Americans back to work. More Band Aids to cover the massive bleeding. Employers will not hire unless there is an increase in their business and 17 MILLION unemployed Americans are only buying diapers, food, gas and other essentials. How Many more millions of immigrants can America handle?
Within this growing and entrenched poverty and illiteracy paradigm, the numbers explode beyond recapture. In my last column, I urged a cap of 100,000 immigrants a year. Dozens of emails urged me to promote a 10 year moratorium. In my book, America on the Brink: The Next Added 100 Million Americans, I DID advocate a 10 year moratorium. If we don’t stop the massive immigrant in-bleeding, we cannot hope to save our educational systems or repair our illiteracy rates.....

Simulated Cyberattack on Tuesday

On February 16, at about 10:00 am ET, the U.S. will be hit by a massive, crippling cyber attack from an unknown entity. Key players will convene in the White House situation room and plan the response, from mitigation to (possibly) retaliation... The war-game is not being put on by the Department of Homeland Security or the Obama administration: it is being run independently and will include former officials who are not part of the federal government.

Wisconsin billboard calls for Obama's impeachment

February 13, 2010

OSHKOSH, Wis. -- A Menasha attorney has rented a billboard calling for President Barack Obama's impeachment.

The billboard is along Highway 41 in Oshkosh. It reads, "Impeach Obama," with the tagline: "America's small businesses are failing; help us spread the message."

It was paid for by Tom Wroblewski. He told The Associated Press on Saturday he would issue a statement in a day or two.

WLUK-TV reports that the sign went up Thursday. It will remain up for at least six months, at a cost of $1,000 per month.

Jef Hall is the chairman of the Winnebago County Democratic Party. He says having a bad opinion of the president doesn't mean there's been an impeachable offense. He says he knows plenty of people who wanted the previous president impeached.

Mid-Atlantic storms leave many hungry

Children miss out on free school lunches

The two snowstorms that pummeled the region, leaving more than 3 feet of snow in some areas, deprived tens of thousands of children from Virginia to Pennsylvania of the free or reduced-price school lunch that might be their only nutritious meal of the day. The nonprofits that try to meet the need when school is not in session closed their doors for much of the week, too, leaving many families looking at bare cupboards. And many parents working hourly jobs were unable to earn any money during the week, as the snow forced businesses to close.

Emperor has no clothes: Pensions are short cash

Illinois politicians are at it again. They're borrowing from the future to make state pension contributions today. Illinois has one of the most underfunded public pension plans in the nation. When boomers start retiring, there won't be enough money to pay those pension promises. Both political parties are still trying to hide the magnitude of the problem. In early January, while everyone was busy watching the nasty campaign commercials, the State of Illinois pulled an end-run on the budget process.
