Yellowstone Earthquake Swarm Summary as of 11 February 2010 The rate of earthquake occurrence in the Madison Plateau area is now at background levels. As of February 11, 2010 4:00 PM MST there have been 1,805 earthquakes located. The swarm began January 17, 2010 around 1:00 PM MST about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of the Old Faithful area on the northwestern edge of the Yellowstone Caldera. Swarms have occurred in this area several times over the past 30 years. Visual observation of landforms and geothermal features by Yellowstone National Park personnel did not show any changes that could be attributed to the earthquakes. This swarm is now the second largest recorded swarm at Yellowstone. It was longer (in time) and included more earthquakes than last year's swarm beneath Yellowstone Lake (December '08/January '09). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Lincoln Nebraska Live Traffic Cams Updated: 4:33 PM Feb 16, 2010 The Nebraska State Patrol has added some muscle to its fleet of vehicles. Troopers have begun training on three LAV-25s -- lightly armored personnel carriers. They were acquired from the ranks of surplus Nebraska Army National Guard equipment. The eight-wheeled LAV-25 can ford streams, rivers and lakes and hit 60 mph on smooth roads. Depending on configuration, they weigh between 10 and 12 tons and are impervious to small-arms fire. The patrol says the LAVs will be used to support rescue and tactical operations and help during natural disasters. Each vehicle is equipped with lights, sirens and communication gear and can hold up to eight people. One LAV will be stationed in each third of the state. |

The administration is investing billions of your tax dollars in nuclear power—and the best project it can find is a stalled reactor with serious safety flaws. Yet last October, federal regulators discovered significant safety concerns in the design proposal for the Westinghouse AP1000 reactors that are slated to be used for the Georgia project and six others around the country. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) rejected the proposal after determining that the shield design would not protect the reactor from earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, and airplane crashes. Michael Johnson, director of the NRC's Office of New Reactors, noted that the agency had "consistently laid out our questions" to Westinghouse about the design, which did not yet meet "fundamental engineering standards." |

The Black Book of Canadian Foreign Policy - by Tamara Lorincz - 2010-02-16 "Democracy," writes Engler in his new book, "requires citizens to keep themselves informed about what their government is doing. Canadians have a right and a responsibility to know, debate and to ultimately shape what is being done in our name around the world. The Canadian government supplied the uranium for the atomic bombs dropped on Japan in World War II. Ottawa supported South African apartheid by allowing trade and commerce with the racist government there. With the support of its foreign service, Canadian mining companies weakened environmental regulations and propped up dictators in Central and South America. In 2004, Canada helped France and the United States overthrow the democratically elected government of Haiti... "Economic Terrorism": The Consequences are Poverty and Mass Unemployment - by David DeGraw - 2010-02-16 “The American oligarchy spares no pains in promoting the belief that it does not exist, but the success of its disappearing act depends on equally strenuous efforts on the part of an American public anxious to believe in egalitarian fictions and unwilling to see what is hidden in plain sight.” — Michael Lind, To Have and to Have Not Yes, of course, we all have very strong differences of opinion on many issues. However, like our Founding Fathers before us, we must put aside our differences and unite to fight a common enemy. It has now become evident to a critical mass that the Republican and Democratic parties, along with all three branches of our government, have been bought off by a well-organized Economic Elite who are tactically destroying our way of life. The harsh truth is that 99% of the US population no longer has political representation. The US economy, government and tax system is now blatantly rigged against us... |
Cheney Pleads Guilty To War Crimes - by Washington's Blog - 2010-02-16 As I have pointed out periodically since 2005: The War Crimes Act of 1996, a federal statute set forth at 18 U.S.C. § 2441, makes it a federal crime for any U.S. national, whether military or civilian, to violate the Geneva Convention by engaging in murder, torture, or inhuman treatment. The statute applies not only to those who carry out the acts, but also to those who order it, know about it, or fail to take steps to stop it. The statute applies to everyone, no matter how high and mighty. *** Indeed, even the lawyers and other people who aided in the effort may be war criminals; see also this article, this one, and this press release. As Robert Parry - the reporter who broke the Iran-Contra story for the Associated Press and Newsweek - pointed out last week: Cheney pronounced himself “a big supporter of waterboarding,” a near-drowning technique that has been regarded as torture back to the Spanish Inquisition and that has long been treated by U.S. authorities as a serious war crime, such as when Japanese commanders were prosecuted for using it on American prisoners during World War II... |
Afghanistan: Charlie Wilson And America's 30-Year War - by Rick Rozoff - 2010-02-16 On February 13 the United States and NATO led an assault with 15,000 Western and Afghan government troops against Marjah, a town in Helmand province with a population of 75,000. One soldier for every five civilians. The NATO contingent involved in the offensive includes troops from Britain, Canada, Denmark, Estonia and the U.S. In the opening hours of the massive attack, "the biggest air[borne] assault ever undertaken by coalition forces in the country," [1] two rockets fired from a NATO High Mobility Artillery Rocket System slammed into a house outside Marjah and killed twelve civilians. General Stanley McChrystal, commander of all U.S. and NATO Forces in the country, described the incident as "regrettable." ... |
Military Action Against Iran Will Have Negative Consequences for Entire World - 2010-02-16 A military strike on Iran would be a big mistake; the problems linked to Iran's nuclear program must be resolved only by diplomatic means, Vladimir Nazarov, deputy secretary of Russia's Security Council, told Interfax news agency in an interview. "Any military action against Iran will explode the situation, will have extremely negative consequences for the entire world, including for Russia, which is a neighbor of Iran," he said. The nuclear program of Iran was launched in the 1950s with the help of the United States as part of the Atoms for Peace program. The support, encouragement and participation of the United States and Western European governments in Iran's nuclear program continued until the 1979 Iranian Revolution that toppled the Shah of Iran... |
Moscow and Latin America: Russia and Nicaragua Plan Military Exercises - 2010-02-16 Moscow -- Russia and Nicaragua are gearing up for joint military exercises, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced today during his visit to Managua. According to the Russian official, such cooperation will allow the two countries to fight drug trafficking, terrorism and organized crime, the Mayak radio station reported today. Lavrov also indicated that "Russia and Nicaragua are in the process of forming investment cooperation, which is expected to expand after the signing of an agreement on the mutual protection of investments." |
Afghanistan: If the Enemy Vanishes -- Kill Civilians - by Robin Beste - 2010-02-16 The civilian deaths in Kandahar and Marjah are a brutal reminder of the heavy price many Afghans will pay in the months and years to come to save the face of those responsible for prosecuting a futile and unjustifiable war. NATO's current offensive in the Afghan town of Marjah is being portrayed as a low casualty mission in the "good war" to get rid of the Taliban. If you were to believe the news broadcasts, it's already a success. Since the assault was always intended to be as much a publicity stunt as serving any military objective, Barack Obama and Gordon Brown will certainly be pleased at how the media has snapped into line and acted as stenographers for Nato press releases. The truth is, most of the few hundred Taliban fighters in Marjah vanished well before the much touted offensive began, not being stupid enough to face up to 15,000 of the most heavily armed troops on the planet... |
The Great Bi-Partisan Deception - by Shamus Cooke - 2010-02-16 Some cancer is too aggressive even for chemotherapy. The US political system is infected with such a disease; and we may be witnessing the first death spasms. In a country ravaged by war and economic crisis, with tens of millions of people suffering, politicians are capable of doing absolutely nothing to help ordinary people. The only two “achievements” of the Democrat’s super majority in the Senate — over the course of five months — were an ineffectual stimulus package and a “surge” of troops in Afghanistan. Now the two party system is reshuffling to pursue a joint mission. Policies that the corporate elite have been planning for decades are in the process of being implemented. The recession is being used as the ultimate excuse to gut Medicare, Social Security, public education and other social services while expanding war, corporate tax breaks and corporate health care ... |

Darpa Looks to Build Real-Life C3P0
Right now, troops trying to listen in on enemy chatter rely on a convoluted process. They tune into insurgency radio frequencies, then hand the radio over to local interpreters, who translate the dialogues. It’s a sloppy process, prone to garbled words and missed phrases.
What troops really need is a machine that can pick out voices from the noise, understand and translate all kinds of different languages, and then identify the voice from a hit list of “wanted speakers.” In other words, a real-life version of Star Wars protocol droid C3PO, fluent “in over 6 million forms of communication.”
Now, the Pentagon’s trying to fast-track a solution that could be a kind of proto-proto-prototype to our favorite gold fussbudget: a translation machine with 98 percent accuracy in 20 different languages.
Darpa, the military’s experimental research agency, is launching the Robust Automatic Translation of Speech program to streamline the translation process. (That’s “RATS,” for short. Ouch.)
