Lincoln, Nebraska | Cosmic coincidence? Trooper reports fireball at same time as earthquake
December 17, 2009
If you happened to slip the word "missile" into your Web search for details about Wednesday's earthquake near Auburn, perhaps you came upon a tale of an intercepted Russian cruise missile, trained on Offutt Air Force Base, that exploded in the Nebraska sky at roughly the same time the ground began to shake.
Perhaps you noticed the 742-word story at www.whatdoesitmean.com quoted a Nebraska State Patrol trooper, Jerry Chab, who reportedly saw a fireball in the sky -- a fireball also seen from Oklahoma to Missouri -- at, coincidentally, the same time as the earthquake.
"Other reports from Nebraska further confirm Officer Chab's description of the downing of this nuclear armed cruise missile with the United States Geological Service," the whatdoesitmean.com story reads.
So, is the story a hoax? A sliver of insight into a diabolical cover-up? A little of this and a little of that?
This much is certain: Chab is a real Nebraska trooper, said spokeswoman Deb Collins.
He's also an amateur astronomer with a night job that takes him into the countryside, Collins said.
At about 9 p.m. Wednesday -- the earthquake was reported at 8:53 p.m., centered just north-northwest of Auburn -- he was in his cruiser west of Table Rock at the intersection of Nebraska Highways 4 and 50.
As windows rattled about 30 miles north-northeast of him, Chab saw a spectacle in the sky.
Chab e-mailed his observations to spaceweather.com, said Tony Phillips, the site operator.
"It flashed for approximately two seconds and was followed by sonic booms and ground shaking, which prompted many calls by the public to law enforcement in a three-county wide area," Chab was quoted as saying.
"If the earthquake is confirmed, as it appears to be, I think we have the most cosmic of coincidences: a large fireball around the same time of an earthquake," Chab told spaceweather. "I'm simply amazed."
Chab had the day off Thursday and declined interviews through Collins.
But he talked to Collins to set the record straight -- including the fact he never mentioned anything about a cruise missile. (Neither did spaceweather.com.)
But some Web sites don't particularly care. The quotes were referenced in the whatdoesitmean.com story about missiles and particle beams.
And just like that, the minor earthquake near Auburn became something of a far greater, or at least far stranger, magnitude.
Lincoln Journal Star - Southeast Nebraskans abuzz after earthquake Wednesday night
The 8:53 p.m. Wednesday quake startled Auburn 198 years to the day after the first of the massive New Madrid earthquakes that reversed the course of the Mississippi River.
"Maybe this is a little brother of the New Madrid," said Anthony Crone, a research geologist with the USGS in Denver.

In order to end cloture, Reid actually had $300 Millions for Louisiana written into the Senate’s ObamaCare Death Plan version to buy Senator Mary Landrieu’s (D-LA) vote.

United Nations will have their own gold bullion coins
Friday, December 18, 2009
The UN recently licensed their own gold bullion coins for minting. It has the UN logo on it as well.
The coins which will be made in Europe will then be distributed world wide. Armand Dufour from the European Banks says the introduction is welcomed. Could this be the new world currency? The global currency that was spoken about through the ages that will come when global governance will be there?
Yes, we think it is. Previous UN coins had no value, they were just collectables or memorabelia but this coin has value and it might just devalue the US dollar even further.
Please note, the picture in this post is not of the gold coin we are talking about.

HAPPY PLACES TO LIVE NEWS - note 'part of this study done BEFORE Katrina' ... are they getting hard up for news??
Study reveals happiest states in U.S.
Sunshine states Hawaii and Florida are in the top 5, but No. 1 may surprise you.WASHINGTON - A new study comparing self-described pleasant feelings with objective measures of good living found these folks generally have reason to feel fine.
The places where people are most likely to report happiness also tend to rate high on studies comparing things like climate, crime rates, air quality and schools.
The happiness ratings were based on a survey of 1.3 million people across the country by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It used data collected over four years that included a question asking people how satisfied they are with their lives.
The state-by-state list, from happiest to least cheery:
Economists Andrew J. Oswald of the University of Warwick in England and Stephen Wu of Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., compared the happiness ranking with studies that rated states on a variety of criteria ranging from availability of public land to commuting time to local taxes.
Probably not surprisingly, their report in Friday’s edition of the journal Science found the happiest people tend to live in the states that do well in quality-of-life studies.
Yet Oswald says “this is the first objective validation of ’happiness’ data,” which is something he says economists have been reluctant to use in the past.
“Very loosely, you could say that we prove that happiness data are ’true,’ — such data have genuine objective informational content,” he said.
“Moreover,” Oswald added, “it is interesting to uncover the pattern of life-satisfaction across one of the world’s important nations.”
Ranking No. 1 in happiness was Louisiana, home of Dixieland music and Cajun/Creole cooking.
Oswald urged a bit of caution in that ranking, however, noting that part of the happiness survey occurred before Hurricane Katrina struck the state, and part of it took place later. Nevertheless, he said, “We have no explicit reason to think there is a problem” with the ranking.
Rounding out the happy five were Hawaii, Florida, Tennessee and Arizona.
At the other end of the scale, last in happiness — is New York state.
As if to illustrate the problem, residents attending a meeting Wednesday in rural Queensbury unleashed their anger and cynicism at a state government they described as corrupt, self-dealing and too quick to increase taxes. It was a tirade that had one lifelong resident saying he was ready to flee “this stinkin’ state.”
Oswald suggested the long commutes, congestion and high prices around New York City account for some of the unhappiness.
He said he has been asked if the researchers expected that states like New York and California, which ranked 46th, would do so badly in the happiness ranking.
“I am only a little surprised,” he said. “Many people think these states would be marvelous places to live in. The problem is that if too many individuals think that way, they move into those states, and the resulting congestion and house prices make it a non-fulfilling prophecy.”
Besides being interesting, the state-by-state pattern has scientific value, Oswald explained.
“We wanted to study whether people’s feelings of satisfaction with their own lives are reliable, that is, whether they match up to reality — of sunshine hours, congestion, air quality, etceteras — in their own state. And they do match.”
Oswald and Wu used data from CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System collected from 2005 to 2008. The survey, launched in 1984, collects information on a variety of health measures.
