Since I don't have a television ... pretty quiet in my home at night. I heard a 'roar' much like a helicopter and my first thoughts were 'what the heck is a helicopter going over my house so close?' ... all three of my dogs had been asleep and immediately woke up to that sound.
Then there was a 'bang' sound on both my sliding glass doors in the livingroom - my first thought was someone had thrown a snowball at the doors.
My dogs immediately started running to both the doors in the livingroom and then went running outside through their dog door ... I thought maybe there was someone in the back fenced in yard that had banged on my doors.

4 Big Mortgage Backers Swim in Ocean of Debt
Even as the biggest banks repay their government debt in what is being heralded as a successful rescue program, four troubled giants of the financial world remain on government life support.
These companies, the American International Group, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and GMAC, are not only unable to repay the government, they are in need of continuing infusions that make them look increasingly like long-term wards of the state.
And the total risk they pose to the taxpayer far exceeds that of the big banks. Fannie and Freddie, in the final days of the year, are even said to be negotiating with the Treasury about greatly expanding the money available to them ....

The Greatest Outpouring Of Money And Credit In History
International Forecaster Weekly
12.7 trillion donated to bankers, solving a problem they created, buy bonds, or gamble in the markets? Inflation on the way, could the US default on its debt? Food aid and unemployment rising together, yet another bank collapse, Dubai bailed out.
The past two years have seen the greatest outpouring of money and credit from central banks and governments in history. In most countries interest rates cannot fall much lower being presently under 1% or close to zero. You might call this an attempt at fiat money recovery. As a result of pump priming for the past six months or more investors have returned to the same gambling and risk taking they engaged in before, the losses of which caused the world economy to come to the edge of the financial abyss. All sectors of investment are again affected by a casino mentality.

Solar Eruption Heading To Earth
The solar eruption happened in the early morning hours today around a newly formed group of sunspots, and indications are that it should slam into Earth’s magnetic field around December 18th. It doesn’t look like it was a big eruption on the solar flare ‘richter’ scale – C class - but might still cause some colourful auroras so folks living in high-latitude areas – like Canada should be on alert. At this point experts are waiting for more data to come in from Sun watching satellites about the blast itself to know exactly if it will hit Earth directly or will it be just a glancing blow. Stay tuned for more details in the coming days.EARTHQUAKE NEWS

Seismicity, faulting, and geophysical anomalies in Nemaha County, Kansas: Relationship to regional structures
Don W. Steeples1, Susan M. DuBois1 and Frank W. Wilson11 Kansas Geological Survey, 1930 Avenue A, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66044
Several of the historical earthquakes in Kansas are believed to be associated with the Nemaha ridge, a buried mountain range that trends south from near Omaha, Nebraska, through Kansas to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The ridge is composed of Precambrian granitic rocks. Recent microearthquake locations and additional historical records indicate that the larger historical epicenters may be associated with the Humboldt fault zone, which forms the eastern boundary of the Nemaha ridge. New geological mapping and geophysical studies reported here indicate that the Humboldt fault breaks the surface through Permian rocks. Gravity and aeromagnetic data indicate that the Humboldt fault may be a complex zone of faulting rather than a single Precambrian structure as previously interpreted. A new interpretation of the Precambrian surface emphasizing the faulting complexity based on previously unavailable geophysical, remote sensing, and subsurface well data is presented here.http://geology.geoscienceworld.org/cgi/content/abstract/7/3/134
The fault line are places where huge under the earth plates meet each other. Earthquakes result when the plates move against each other. Nebraska has also experienced some minor and major earthquakes in the past.
Humboldt Fault is a 300-million-year-old subterranean fracture in a vast plate of granite stretching from Nemaha County on the north to Sumner County at the Oklahoma line.
In southeastern Nebraska, where the risk of earthquakes runs slightly higher than the rest of the state, the Humboldt Fault is part of the Nemaha tectonic Zone that extends southward to Oklahoma. “Looking across one creek valley, you can see the displacement,” Pabian said. “That’s as close as you can come in Nebraska to seeing tilted sedimentary rocks,” evidence that the Earth’s crust has moved.
The Union Fault, which runs from southeastern Lancaster County to a point east of Union and then east into Iowa, is another Nebraska fault that can be seen from the surface, in this case at an old Missouri River quarry. Normally, soil and surface sediments cover up faults. The Union Fault lies at the southern boundary of the Mid-continent Rift System, a gigantic, billion-year-old crevice hundreds of feet below the surface. It runs southwest from Lake Superior, crossing Minnesota, Iowa, southeast Nebraska, and ending in Kansas. It is at least 700 miles long and up to 40 miles wide. In places it is filled with hundreds of feet of ancient, solidified lava.
Other Nebraska faults include the LaPlatte in Sarpy and Cass counties, the Bunzhastl in Furnas County and the Bed Canyon in Frontier and Red Willow counties. In these places, the Earth shows displacement of a few hundred feet. Some places on Earth show miles of displacement.
A number of quakes have struck the more active southeast over the years, including one intensity VII quake that hit Tecumseh on March 1,1935, with two shocks about four minutes apart. That one was attributed to the Humboldt Fault line and was felt over 70,000
square miles. Another smaller quake hit Tecumseh later that same month.

Quake jolts Auburn area
OMAHA WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITERS
The earthquake that jolted Auburn, Neb., on Wednesday night was quick, loud and appears to have caused little damage.
The epicenter of the magnitude 3.5 quake was about two miles northwest of Auburn and about 51 miles southeast of Lincoln, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It occurred at about 8:53 p.m.
Cell phone service to the area was interrupted, either by the quake or the increased number of calls that followed it, one witness told The World-Herald, and the walls of some homes and businesses showed small cracks.
Marcia Goering, 63, lives with her husband on an acreage north of town.

“I was sitting in one room watching TV, and my husband was in another room,” she said. “All of a sudden, there was this really big noise and this jolt that just shook you back and forth really quick. It almost sounded like ... an explosion. That’s what it felt like.”
The couple found no visible damage to their house, only to a small rocking horse figurine that fell from a shelf.
Bob Cole, the emergency management director for Nemaha County, said crews would look for damage this morning. The tremor, though scary, wasn’t serious enough to send crews out into the night.
“I have a brother in California,” he said. “And by Southern California standards, they would probably think we were being silly.”
Most of North America east of the Rocky Mountains experiences infrequent earthquakes, according to the USGS. Earthquakes occur on faults within bedrock, usually miles deep. This one began about 3.1 miles below the surface.
Quakes east of the Rockies are typically felt over much broader regions than similar quakes on the West Coast, according to the USGS.
The largest recorded earthquake in the state’s history occurred March 28, 1964, when a magnitude 5.1 quake struck near Merriman, in Cherry County.
A lesser quake, one of similar magnitude to Wednesday’s, took place about 20 miles northeast of Auburn, in Fremont County, Iowa, in July 2004.
Wednesday’s quake could be felt as far away as northwest Missouri and southwest Iowa and throughout much of southeast Nebraska.
People in some parts of Auburn felt very little, if anything. Goering’s daughter, Sara, was in the Southside Bar & Grill at the time, and said people there were unaware of the quake until others called the bar and told them.
“I didn’t feel a thing,” she said.
According to the USGS, the first significant earthquake recorded in Nebraska was on April 24, 1867. Since then, at least seven earthquakes have originated in the state and several quakes in neighboring states have been felt in Nebraska.
