Report: Nebraska immigrants vital to economic recovery
OMAHA -- A new report says immigrants in Nebraska have a buying power of nearly $3.8 billion and are integral to the state's economy as workers.
The report issued Monday by the Washington-based Immigration Policy Center says those contributions and others mean Nebraska's foreign-born population will play a critical role in the state's economic recovery.
The report was compiled using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and other research groups.
A group spokeswoman says lack of available data forced the report's focus on Latino and Asian groups and not other immigrants.
The report didn't differentiate between legal and illegal immigrants in its economic analysis.
In 2007, immigrants constituted 6.5 percent of the state's work force.

A new report raises the question of whether Nebraska state government owns too many cars.
Released on Monday by state auditor Mike Foley, the audit shows that from mid-2007 to mid-2008, there were 1,000 state passenger vehicles driven fewer than 6,000 miles.
Foley says that minimal use of some cars makes sense in some cases, but he questions whether it makes sense for the state to insure and maintain some vehicles.
Among the other findings in the audit was that a state law requiring vehicle use, such as miles driven each day, was widely ignored.
Foley says a patchwork of state laws and court rulings have enabled 25 state agencies to buy cars with little oversight from the state's Department of Administrative Services.

Sen. Nelson Won't Support Health Reform Right Now
Nelson took his declaration national on CBS' Face the Nation, where he was joined by Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman. The two told what it would take for them to support health care reform.
Click here to find out more!
Democrats need every party vote to pass health care. Right now they don't have Senator Nelson's.
Nelson is hung-up on the language dealing with abortion. He's also concerned with a proposal that includes allowing people as young as 55 to buy into Medicare.
"I'm worried it's the predecessor to a single payer plan, maybe even more directly than the public option," said Nelson.
Connecticut Independent Joseph Lieberman is largely seen as a Democratic vote and he has problems with the plan too. He did offer some fixes he and Nelson agree on. On Face the Nation he said the Senate could pass health care reform this week if the Medicare buy-in and public option ideas were killed.
With those changes Nelson and Lieberman said reform could still bring insurance to 30 million uninsured.
Republicans however aren't as optimistic, presenting a rebuttal on Face the Nation
"We need to stop and start over," said Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnel.
CHINA AND THE US DOLLAR NEWS
"The crisis may come sooner, because of the growing threat of a major currency crisis. Since China will not revalue its currency and alleviate the problem of chronic imbalances, the United States is letting the dollar fall against more flexible currencies.
This is pushing the burden of adjustment onto the euro and the yen in a way that is becoming unsustainable for eurozone exporters."

UPI | Walker's World: Beware the Greeks
December 14, 2009
... This brings us to the heart of the matter. Between them, governments and central banks have over the past year pumped about $5 trillion (or 10 percent of global GDP) into fending off another Great Depression. This has supplied a modest recovery, but the private economy has not yet been able to take over the heroic job of sustaining it.
"We have not yet achieved self-reinforcing recovery," former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker warned the Germans in a widely cited interview with Der Spiegel last week. "We are heavily dependent upon government support so far. We are on a government support system, both in the financial markets and in the economy."
The G7 economies are approaching the ugly moment of transition. The massive deficit spending by states and liquidity creation by central banks cannot be long maintained. They are running out of ammunition. Within the next six to 18 months, they will have to rein in the deficit spending and increase interest rates, and hope that the private economy will by then have recovered sufficiently to restore growth. It is very questionable whether the private economy is healthy enough to do this. And in the case of weak economies like Greece, governments will then face an ugly choice between depression and default.
The crisis may come sooner, because of the growing threat of a major currency crisis. Since China will not revalue its currency and alleviate the problem of chronic imbalances, the United States is letting the dollar fall against more flexible currencies. This is pushing the burden of adjustment onto the euro and the yen in a way that is becoming unsustainable for eurozone exporters.
A currency crisis would be disastrous and probably trigger a wave of populist protectionism against Chinese exports. That is the main reason why the "recovery" is so unconvincing and also why gold remains above $1,000 an ounce. The risks are ahead are as daunting in Greece as they are in Denmark. ... READ MORE
In borrowing from China, we created our own economic ‘China syndrome'
Let's get real: Our invasion into Iraq was to control this oil and not because of WMDs. It was not about terrorism, but greed. Soldiers as well as innocent Iraqis lost their lives and we have spent over $700 billion to fight the war in Iraq. A large sum we borrowed from China to keep this war going. Who stands to profit in these oil bids? You guessed it; China. The excerpts from this WP article will simply blow your mind:
“Chinese diplomats in Baghdad have kept a low profile in recent years, working out of a hotel and drawing little public attention. But Iraqi officials say they have been struck by the caliber of Chinese diplomats, many of whom speak flawless Arabic and have developed a nuanced understanding of Iraqi politics.”
This eye-opening article goes onto report: "We all know that China is on track to become a major economic as well as technological power," said Assam Jihad, a spokesman for the Oil Ministry.”
Do not get angry at the Iraqis since it was their oil to begin with; it was our foolishness for believing in the Bush/Cheney administration on why we needed to invade Iraq in the first place. For two oil-men, they look pretty silly in light of this story.
These wars have sunk our economy into a sink-hole period! In borrowing handily from China, we created our own economic ‘China syndrome'. These U.S. oil firms must be facing their own ‘Shock and Awe'. China out-gunned them without launching one single rocket or sending troops into Iraq. They did so with brains instead of brawn.
To further prove China's economic dominance in the world, one only has to read this explosive article published in the NY Times this past week: Recession Elsewhere, but It's Booming in China There you will read where their rate of consumption has surpassed ours on goods such as flat-screen televisions, washers, dryers as Americans hold back on their purchases.
In fact as this article points out: "China is pulling ahead at this particular moment partly because Americans, debt-laden and worried about their jobs, are pulling back. After decades of gorging on consumption, Americans are saving."
What should be a wake-up call to those in Washington D.C. who control our economic destinies is where this article points out: "For the first time, China, not the United States, is a locomotive helping to pull the global economy out of a slump. But China's tiny appetite for American exports means that the main benefit has gone to commodity exporters and to businesses in China."

American debt bulging between $56-$110 trillion
December 14th, 2009By John Browne
Last week, we witnessed Ben Bernanke’s Senate confirmation hearings for a second term as Fed Chairman. The air was thick with hypocrisy, as Senators vied with each other to cast blame on the Fed Chairman for the fiscal mistakes of the Congress.
As an overtly politicized figure who has looked to bolster the poll numbers of successive Administrations, Bernanke certainly should shoulder a large share of the blame for steering the United States towards the brink of bankruptcy; however, he did not act alone. Ironically, many of his co-conspirators are currently his harshest critics.
Killing the Currency
December 14th, 2009By Robert P. Murphy
First under the Bush Administration and even more so under President Obama, the federal government has been seizing power and spending money as it hasn’t done since World War II. But as bold as the Executive Branch has been during this financial crisis, the innovations of Fed chairman Ben Bernanke have been literally unprecedented. Indeed, it is entirely plausible that before Obama leaves office, Americans will be using a new currency.
Prepare For The Hyperinflationary Great Depression
12/14/2009
John Williams, who runs the popular counter government data manipulation site Shadowstats, has thrown down the gauntlet to deflationists, and in an extensive report concludes that the probability of a hyperinflationary episode in America over the next year has reached critical levels. While the debate between deflationists and (hyper)inflationists has been a long and painful one, numerous events set off in motion by the Bernanke Fed (as a direct legacy of the Greenspan multi-decade period of cheap and boundless credit) may have well cast America as the unwilling protagonist in the sequel of the failed monetary policy economic experiment better known as Zimbabwe.
Williams does not mince his words:
The U.S. economic and systemic solvency crises of the last two years are just precursors to a Great Collapse: a hyperinflationary great depression. Such will reflect a complete collapse in the purchasing power of the U.S. dollar, a collapse in the normal stream of U.S. commercial and economic activity, a collapse in the U.S. financial system as we know it, and a likely realignment of the U.S. political environment. The current U.S. financial markets, financial system and economy remain highly unstable and vulnerable to unexpected shocks. The Federal Reserve is dedicated to preventing deflation, to debasing the U.S. dollar. The results of those efforts are being seen in tentative selling pressures against the U.S. currency and in the rallying price of gold.

The 1-3-6 Idea
Many a moon ago, a strange comment was made to me by what might be called a ’sage’ in the idea of trading in markets of all types. If it appeared that too much money was pouring into one particular investment or vehicle, then something was wrong with the efficient functioning of that market. Forever and a day I ignored this sage and probably should not have. Think about what we have witnessed since the great “crisis” began. In February of 2007 when the first cracks became evident that our subprime society was filled with cracks and that an earthquake was imminent with the failure of several medium sized mortgage lenders, the notion that we should expect an all out collapse was there and certain celebrity investors and talking heads made billions from the idiocy and misfortunes of those who thought that nothing could be whipped into something profitable and the residue they wiped on the curb by that fire hydrant was actually gold.
Oops again.
So when things started to shift violently, I started to listen to this sage who told me in 2007 “watch the short end” and no, that was not related to something pornographic or a hook-up with Tiger at a disco, this referred to the Treasury markets. When one looks at the charts for the three securities at the short end, the 1, 3, and 6 month bills, you understand as to what I am referring to and why I felt the need to call Glenn Beck last Thursday and warn him that something historic was on the verge of happening again.

GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS AND CHILDREN
TAIPEI, Taiwan | More parents giving children up for adoption due to financial woes
Monday, December 14, 2009
The number of phone calls made to the foundation for this purpose posed a significant 55 percent rise over the past five years, increasing from 495 cases in 2003 to 770 in 2008, according to Chen.
For the first 10 months of this year, the foundation accepted 511 phone calls on the issue, an average of 1.7 calls daily, the statistics show.
Eighty-seven percent of those who made the calls did so because of financial difficulties, representing a remarkable surge from 50 percent in January 2008 to 96 percent in September of the same year, with the percentage reaching 100 percent in January, March and June 2009, according to Chen.
According to data collected by the foundation, another reason for children being given up for adoption was because they were born to underage parents. About 23 percent of children put up for adoption had one parent under the age of 20, Chen said.
It is usually more difficult for sick children, those aged over 3 and children of drug-addicts to find suitable parents willing to adopt them, Chen added.

December 14, 2009
In a Washington Post opinion piece published on December 6, longtime expansionary entitlement program apologists Peter Edelman and Barbara Ehrenreich ripped into the 1996 welfare reform law and its alleged effect on the poor during the struggling economy of the past two years.
In the course of their rant, Edelman and Ehrenreich told readers something that the rest of the press has largely ignored since Barack Obama took office in January: Homelessness is up, as in way, way up:
According to the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty (NLCHP), the number of homeless Americans is up by 61 percent since the recession began in December 2007.
In fact, a new report from a source normally favored by the press tells us that new “tent cities” have sprung up, and that others in existence a year ago have grown. Does anyone think these facts would remain so well-hidden if Bush 43 were still in office?
Interestingly, it seems that Edeleman and Ehrenreich appear to have misinterpreted their information source. An NLCHP report that appears to have been released on December 4, 2008 is where I found a stat matching the pair’s claimed increase. But it was very differently phrased (bold is mine):
Reuters has reported that local and state homeless groups have seen a 61 percent rise in homelessness since the foreclosure crisis began in 2007.
What the media has described as “the foreclosure crisis” actually began in late 2006 or early 2007.
Edelman and Ehrenreich erroneously presented their stat as if it’s a 2007-2009 figure. So their stat doesn’t contribute to proving that homelessness has increased significantly this year. Oh well, that’s okay, because the U.S. Conference of Mayors just did so, even if you have to dig a bit to get to the confirming info.
Perhaps in a bid to protect their Dear Leader in Washington, the headline in the mayors’ press release (PDF; “U.S. Cities See Sharp Increases in the Need for Food Assistance; Decreases in Individual Homelessness”) makes it appear as if homelessness might be less of a problem than it was a year ago.
Uh, not exactly, as this detailed look at the 27 cities described in the actual report (PDF) shows:

It was colder in Edmonton, Alberta Canada Sunday than anywhere else in North America
- 58.4 C = - 73.12 F
Environment Canada recorded a bone-chilling -46.1 C -- or -58.4 with wind chill -- at the Edmonton International Airport at 5 a.m., said Environment Canada meteorologist Pierre Lessard.
The temperature shattered the city's previous Dec. 13 cold record of -36.1 C, which was set last year.
"To break a temperature by 10 degrees is very exceptional," said Lessard.
COPENHAGEN (AP) - China, India and other developing nations boycotted U.N. climate talks on Monday Dec 14
Dec 14, 8:58 AM (ET)
COPENHAGEN (AP) - China, India and other developing nations boycotted U.N. climate talks on Monday, bringing negotiations to a halt with their demand that rich countries discuss much deeper cuts in their greenhouse gas emissions.
Representatives from developing countries - a bloc of 135 nations - said they refused to participate in any formal working groups at the 192-nation summit until the issue was resolved.
The African-led move was a setback for the Copenhagen talks, which were already faltering over long-running disputes between rich and poor nations over emissions cuts and financing for developing countries to deal with climate change.
However, the move Monday was largely seen as a ploy to shift the agenda to the responsibilities of the industrial countries and make emissions reductions the first item for discussion when world leaders begin arriving Tuesday.
"I don't think the talks are falling apart, but we're losing time," said Kim Carstensen, of the World Wildlife Fund. The developing countries "are making a point."
The dispute came as the conference entered its second week, and only days before over 100 world leaders including President Barack Obama were scheduled to arrive in Copenhagen.

YEARS OF DECEIT: US OPENLY ACCEPTS BIN LADEN LONG DEAD
BIN LADEN NEVER MENTIONED IN McCHRYSTAL REPORT OR OBAMA SPEECH
"HUNT FOR BIN LADEN" A NATIONAL SHAME
Veterans Today - By Gordon Duff/STAFF WRITER/Senior Editor
Conservative commentator, former Marine Colonel Bob Pappas has been saying for years that bin Laden died at Tora Bora and that Senator Kerry's claim that bin Laden escaped with Bush help was a lie. Now we know that Pappas was correct. The embarassment of having Secretary of State Clinton talk about bin Laden in Pakistan was horrific. He has been dead since December 13, 2001 and now, finally, everyone, Obama, McChrystal, Cheney, everyone who isn't nuts is finally saying what they have known for years.
However, since we lost a couple of hundred of our top special operations forces hunting for bin Laden after we knew he was dead, is someone going to answer for this with some jail time? Since we spent 200 million dollars on "special ops" looking for someone we knew was dead, who is going to jail for that? Since Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney continually talked about a man they knew was dead, now known to be for reasons of POLITICAL nature, who is going to jail for that? Why were tapes brought out, now known to be forged, as legitimate intelligence to sway the disputed 2004 election in the US? This is a criminal act if there ever was one.
In 66 pages, General Stanley McChrystal never mentions Osama bin Laden. Everything is "Mullah Omar"now. In his talk at West Point, President Obama never mentioned Osama bin Laden. Col. Pappas makes it clear, Vice President Cheney let it "out of the bag" long ago. Bin Laden was killed by American troops many many years ago.
America knew Osama bin Laden died December 13, 2001. After that, his use was hardly one to unite America but rather one to divide, scam and play games. With bin Laden gone, we could have started legitimate nation building in Afghanistan instead of the eternal insurgency that we invented ourselves.

This amazing photo shows a UFO buzzing sleepy Somerset, experts believed in February.
The thin slivery shape appeared in a blue sky over a holiday park in the village of Brean.
The sighting in July 2008 brought families flocking from caravans and stopped drivers in their tracks.
The snaps and footage caused an internet sensation and sparked lively debate after being sent anonymously to a local news website in nearby Burnham-on-Sea.
In the video the cylindrical object can be seen moving erratically and maintaining its height, though it has no visible means of power.
UFO expert Malcolm Robinson, of Strange Phenomena Investigations, said: "This is very exciting and consistent with other sightings."
